Oppenheimer (2023)
Great Movie, but Sound Dominates Voices
I was anxious to see this movie. So many great actors. However, the sound (whether the music or background noises) dominate the entire movie. I had a terrible time hearing the characters. To make it worse, the characters mumbled or spoke so softly that you couldn't hear them due to the dominate music. I don't know if the editors are hoping to win an academy award for best sound.
Gary Oldman was only in the movie for 10 minutes but was brilliant. The only time you could actually hear the character's words.
Great historical movie. Little too long as there were some scenes they could have left out.
What was the need to show a sex scene during the security clearance hearings?
Overall I give it an 8 out of 10 due to the acting and storyline.
Outlander: America the Beautiful (2018)
Still Holding Hope
Why the hell did they put Ray Charles ATB song at the end? Not a good idea. I am still holding hope that Outlander regains what it had in Seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 was terrible. Unfortunately Season 4 Episode 1 sucks.
Greyhound (2020)
Very Disappointing
Once again, political correctness takes over history. Amazing how frightened today's Hollywood is so afraid to offend someone. Why couldn't they show anything from the German side? At least show some scenes about the German Uboat crew. The only time you knew they were fighting the Germans was when they listened to a German making comments over the radio. The sound is overbearing. You can barely hear the characters talk. When the characters do talk, they mumble and you have to replay the scene to understand what they said. What was the point of having the ship cook (Cleveland) continue to serve food to the captain (Hanks)? Somehow the movie was trying to create some type of chemistry with the captain and cook and somberness when the cook dies. Also, why even have Elizabeth Shue in this movie. She was only in the movie for 10 minutes. They tried to create some type of love interest as part of the movie but it seemed out of place. Besides, she doesn't even seem to have much feelings for the captain (Hanks) when she shows up at a hotel lobby to exchange Christmas presents. I wish Hanks used better attention to this movie like he did in Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. This movie will be one WWII film you will forget.
Coco avant Chanel (2009)
Wonderful Movie
This is a great movie, especially if you appreciate good acting skills. Audrey Tautou is outstanding as Gabrielle Chanel. Her expressions, body language, emotions, strength, and determination in her character replicating Coco Chanel is all there. Marie Gillain and Emmanuelle Devos gave wonderful performances in their roles as well.
Birdsong (2012)
War, Romance, Fear, and Hope
I enjoyed this 2 part mini-series. Clémence Poésy and Marie-Josée Croze are beautiful and very talented actresses. Eddie Redmayne is a great actor. I love the history of WWI.
Un long dimanche de fiançailles (2004)
Superb
A wonderful movie all around. Excellent acting. Audrey Tautou is superb.
1917 (2019)
Could Have Been Better
I love the camera angles and the closeup shots in the movie. However, I am frustrated how the movie never showed actual German soldiers in battle or fighting but rather scatters of Germans (sniper shooting, some soldiers shooting in the dark of an abandon town, German pilot for only a minute). I have a feeling that once again political correctness got in the way. Amazing how Hollywood is so frightened they may offend someone that they will try everything to ensure another side isn't shown as the enemy. They would have found a lot more Germans than what the movie depicts.
What really bothered me is the scene where the rat crosses the trip wire causing a major explosion. Someone both soldiers don't receive any wombs (just some dirt in their eyes) but the explosion caused the entire mile long tunnel to collapse (as they ran through the tunnel, it was collapsing behind them but never in front of them).
