Black Bird: Pilot (2022)
Screw up in first 2 minutes
Opening scene of pilot in the apartment says November 1996 and Guns and Roses Mr. Brownstone is playing. It was not released until July 1987. Maybe the music was not meant to be contemporary with the date it was happening but I think not. Why give a date, make a song prominent and not play something out at the time? The pilot is good but when the first thing I notice is something I think is a screw up, it makes me wonder how much effort went into thinking it all through. I will keep watching though.
1883 (2021)
One of the best shows ever
I watch a lot of tv. And I mean a lot. Every new show gets one episode to prove itself and if even average I give them a second. At 51, I have seen 1,000s of shows. I am essentially a TV addict. 1883 had me hooked from the first 5 minutes. It is one of the best shows I have ever watched. Isabel May deserves every award there is for her role. The rest of the cast is incredible. I had my doubts about Tim McGraw acting but he is incredible. The always fabulous Sam Elliot is at his best. There are no bad actors in this cast. The worst thing about the show is that it had to end without a possible season2 with Isabel May. No matter what you do, find a way to watch this. Whatever you have to pay for Paramount it is worth every single penny to see this show. I rarely if ever can find a show I see no fault with but this is one. I don't know what to say other than it is SO good and Isabel May must be a rising star. She is incredible and deserves incredible roles and awards. The whole cast deserves awards but she is an incredible standout. WATCH IT.
Chicago Fire (2012)
Great show until Warehouse Fire
This show was so awesome until the season after the warehouse fire. It was a lot of real intense action as fires were fought and made me so tense in a good way as I watched. After that finale, it has become a soap opera. There are a few fire runs that turn into a way for some romance to develop. It needs a lot more action and less firehouse love and saving souls found at fires that are covered for a few minutes. First 6 seasons, 10, since then a generous 4.
This Is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist (2021)
Spoiler below for a lame documentary
I love documentaries but not when the ending has no conclusion. I realize the crime was never solved but why make a documentary that leaves you without a conclusion. At the end they finally say it was made hoping someone can help solve the crime. Put that on some most wanted show, not a 4 part wast of time. The spoiler here is that there is no spoiler ending to give away.
Chef's Table: BBQ (2020)
Second Episode ruins it
If I just watched episode 1, a 10+ but episode 2 is awful. That weirdo is nothing about BBQ. He doesn't BBQ, he grills food. I don't know where he would ever be interesting but not on a BBQ show. The 1st episode at Snow's is incredible and draws you in, the second episode is repulsive. The chef is a freak. He is not interesting unless you're watching a show about some weird narcissist who likes to blow smoke.
Greyhound (2020)
Incredible Movie. Do not miss this masterpiece.
I have been very unimpressed by Apple TV but this movie is worth anything you pay for Apple TV. I do not know how anyone could not give this a 10. It is pure action and riveting. Hanks is not my favorite actor but he is awesome in this one as are the supporting cast. When the credits rolled I asked my wife if we had missed something because it felt like 15 minutes had gone by. It is edge of the seat awesome. It was incredible on my large screen TV and if theaters ever open safely I will go see it on the big screen. I can't say other than it is awesome. If you don't like it, you are just looking for something to hate during Covid. There is just nothing not to love. Watch it and love it.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
My girlfriend watches everything, but not this.
This is a truly horrible movie. It is a cartoonish story of nothing. I have no problem turning off a movie I don't like or walking out. My girlfriend will sit through literally anything. Well, until this. Luckily we rented it from redbox and weren't stuck in a theatre. I was being the kind boyfriend and watching it with her until she said "this is awful, can we turn it off?" I hit the stop button ASAP. It has no story and the acting is terrible. It's basically just about a middle aged girl dating a filthy rich guy. She somehow has no clue he is a billionaire. Apparently she is the only person on earth who hasn't googled a boyfriend. I don't know how it ends because after the bachelor party scene on the cargo ship we were done. I also don't know how this got 7 stars, it's just awful. Other than the very attractive actors, it's a cluster.
Camping (2018)
Is there a story anywhere here?
I've watched the season so far and there is absolutely no story or continuity. It's hard to even write about how bad it is because there is no theme or any reason for it. I keep watching because I like the actors but it never goes anywhere. If it gets renewed, I'm out. Jennifer Garner has an excellent agent because this is just a way to get her on TV. If you haven't watched it, don't start. I only give it a couple of stars because the lesbian forest ranger is mildly funny and it has occasional very short funny moments. But overall, it's really bad.
Mother! (2017)
Worst film in a long time.
I see a lot of movies. 6 this week alone and sadly one was Mother. I like the stars in the movie but the movie is just horrible. It makes no sense. Other reviewers have tried to read into it that it's about Mother Earth, about god and about the devil. It's really about nothing. It's just a mishmash of scenes that make no sense and gets progressively worse as it seeks some conclusion. Unless you just must see every movie out there, absolutely skip this.
Wind River (2017)
Must see
This is one of the best films of the year. The acting is excellent. The cinematography is so beautiful. The story makes sense and flows perfectly. I don't read about movies before I go and didn't know Elizabeth Olsen was in it and didn't know it was her until the credits. She is excellent. I hope she does more films. There was just nothing not to live about this movie and I don't like most movies more than they're OK. This rises to the one of the best. Go see it before it's out of theaters. It demands a big screen.
The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017)
Action packed and funny
This a great pure action film. If you expect reality in pure action films, well you're a fool and shouldn't see this. But, if you love over the top action, car chases, fights and humor then see this. The stars make a perfect pair and play off each other perfectly. A great break from the reality of the real world. Go!!
Ghost Town (2008)
Very Very Funny from The Office guy.
I have to admit that I am big "The Office" fan, both British and American versions. (Even if you don't care for the Office, like my girlfriend, you will like this if you like truly funny movies that are intelligently written. She loved it.) The lead here, Ricky Gervais, is a creator of both Office versions and a very funny, under appreciated, deadpan actor. This movie is full of funny bits that fit perfectly with his character and the story he is telling. The story itself is nothing novel but the delivery and writing are great fun. If you are a fan of the Office you will recognize much of his character there and Michael's in the US version here. The subtle facial expressions, the witty insults, the physical comedy and above all great acting. You will also see something the office is famous for, putting small details on the set that coincide with what is going on. One example, that doesn't spoil anything, is the scene where he and doctor Pashar are talking about relationships by the dental office's files. Gervais is referencing "Hell" and on the lower right are two files numbered 666. Some may see this as coincidence, but it's clearly not if you have watched the Office and/or seen the DVD extras on the British DVD set. It is these little extras that make an already very enjoyable film even more fun. I highly recommend this film for all who love to laugh out loud.
