Harry & Meghan (2022)
Interesting watch (all the 0/1 ratings are suspicious)
I am not a royal follower, have just only seen some of the big headlines. Still, this could have been done in 3 episodes. I almost stopped watching after the 2nd because it was all repetitive, boring filler.
Good thing I kept it on while folding laundry, because it gets interesting in episode 4. I know this is 1-sided but it was mostly believable if you think of them as executives of a family business with middle managers vying for importance and control by steering them. The business side of the royal family is sad and a tragic way to live.
Mean Girls has nothing on them.
I knew the British media was a soul-less crew of hate-mongers but it was eye-opening to learn how they are integrated into the institutions they "cover". It's all one big incestuous, back-scratching pool.
Good Kids (2016)
Unexpected and fun teen flick
This is a fun movie for a casual Friday night. Great characters. Good story. Few surprises from the usual formula. Love these actors. Really fun ride!!!
The Princess Switch (2018)
Why Netflix?! Why??
There are so many great shows on Netflix, I am BAFFLED as to why they green-lighted this turkey. All the good reviews here are most definitely PAID for.
Let me start by saying I am a Vanessa Hudgens fan, having watched the High School Musical flicks with my kids and even enjoyed them somewhat.
I can enjoy simplistic rom-com movies for what they offer; empty good fun for a no-stress, relaxing evening. But they should have a basic plot and a script not written by 1st graders. And please, splurge for an appealing prince. With all the wanna-be actors roaming LA, how hard would it be to get a better looking guy to play across Vanessa who doesn't look like her financial advisor.
This movie disappoints from start to finish. The story is completely implausible, offering no reason to suspend disbelief. A bakery owner closes up last-minute the week before Christmas? The princess switches places to "get to know her people" only to spend the WHOLE time with 2 people locked up in their house? There are so many more idiotic plot elements which make the whole movie just a random collection of scenes that never get you to care 1 bit about any of the characters. Don't even get me started on the weirdo elf-like dude who keeps appearing from Chicago to Belgravia with "meaningful" advice.
Note to the costume designer: please do not dress a 20-something princess in Queen Elizabeth's wardrobe. What a waste of a beautiful Ms. Hudgens.
My daughter and I spent the entire movie hoping it would get better. It didn't.
Use my review to save yourself. Go clean out your sock drawer instead.
Nancy Drew (2007)
Well done family movie for a happy Nancy Drew Fan!
The low rating is misleading. I felt compelled to write this so others looking for a fun family movie will have a real review.
I read the books when I was a kid. I took my daughter to watch this movie. We all enjoyed it. They did a great job keeping to the original 60's Nancy Drew style while having the story set in present day LA. The film is original, witty, fast-paced and charming. The plot was easy enough for kids to follow, but interesting enough to keep adults engaged. Emma Roberts did a superb job and the rest of the cast was good. I continue to be baffled by the ratings here on IMDb: solid movies get bad ratings while blockbuster trash get higher ratings. It's become an instrument of the professional (paid) critics who are trying to control their public, rather than the public helping each other with honest input.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Kitschy and Flashy but Falls Flat (is this really by Tina Fey??)
At the time of this review, this has a rating of 8.2 which is in the same range as Orange is the New Black. This to me is a sure sign that the shows own marketing team is boosting the rating with fake reviews. I felt compelled to write this review so IMDb can stay somewhat reliable for those of us who actually use it.
On what planet could this limp "comedy" with a lazy story-line and flat characters (self absorbed rich bitch Jane K; wacky landlady Carol Kane; illegal Chinese delivery boy Dong) parading a hyper and annoying Ellie Kemper be in the same league as Orange is the New Black, or any other show rated in the 8 range.
This is OK for background noise while you're cooking or doing laundry. It does not require nor deserve your full attention. It comes across as a middle school production with the cheesy stereotyped characters and predictable plots. I won't even get into the flippant & silly handling of the cult-kidnapping survivor. That is the basis of the whole show and instead of using humor to make it meaningful, they entirely missed the mark.
Netflix has had a run of some stellar original series. Why did they take something rejected by NBC??? This show would have done OK on Nickelodeon. Netflix, please stick to the great material we've come to cherish and don't dilute your quality with quantity even if it has big names attached.
PS. What a monumental waste of a perfectly delectable Jon Hamm!!!
Hick (2011)
Boring and Pointless
I like highbrow drama as much as the next person, but at the 1 hour mark, nothing much had still happened in this movie.
Blake Lively looked confused and not much vested in her role. It's likely she signed on to do this film with expectations, but once it was underway, she lost interest.
I love Chloe and probably only made it to 1 hour because she was interesting to watch, but again, nothing interesting happened.
Eddie Redmayne is a great actor but even he couldn't save this limp "story". Even after the "murder scene", I was bored and ended up turning it off.
What a waste of actors, money, and film.
