Night Feeder (1988)
Not so bad it's good, just plain old bad.
Haha, wow - this was terrible. Sadly I can't remember why I had this on my watchlist, but at least whoever suggested it can feel safe from being punched, lol.
This is a shining example of the fact, that it takes more to make a movie than to just point a camera at something and press 'record'.
The actual visuals are terrible, the editing is horrible and don't even get me started on the soundtrack - that's beyond horrible. The acting is as bad as the rest, so there is nothing to come for there either. On top of that it is just boring beyond belief.
One (very very very) small saving grace, is the monster, which is shown in the last 5 minutes or so (any effect before that is not worth your time either). The monster is not good, but better than expected from this excuse for a movie. Those 5 minutes are all you "need" to see.
In short: Even if you like cheap and terrible 80's low-budget horror, there are LOTS of better choices than this.
... you have been warned.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
I'm more dead inside than the movie.
What we have here is another example of the hype-machine doing what it usually does - selling something at a higher price than the worth of the product. I was SO looking forward to see it, but just like most modern horror movies it disappointed despite all the promising words. Perhaps, after watching so many horror movies, I've just gotten a bit jaded? ... who knows. It's certainly bloody and milks its R-rating for all it can, but the story is just uninspiring and I felt close to nothing about almost everything about it. Well, perhaps except for the first 6 minutes - the intro was great. The rest was just boring and formulaic. But honestly: is it BAD? No, I don't think so - it seems (mostly) competently made, but it's just (imho) very far from what I'd hoped for. To me '6' seems like a fair score - slightly above average, but not "must see". Perhaps it's time to lay the Evil Dead to a final rest.
Mad God (2021)
A generous 5 stars.
Some of the animation is good, but honestly (and imho) not a whole lot of it. I might have been able to live with that, if the story had been good, but there's hardly any story there and it basically looks exactly like what it is: something that has been cobbled together by amateurs over 30 years. Sorry, Phil, but I don't mean you. I could go into more detail, but it'll only get worse, so I won't, but basically I found this a huge waste of my time and my love of stop-motion wasn't fed with this movie.
Eraser: Reborn (2022)
Eraser: Regurgitation
Yikes. Everything here is TERRIBLE. Badly written story, badly acted, full of uninspired identical fist fights and some shooting that looks like all other low-budget fares ... perhaps except for even more CGI bullethits. It was SO hard to get through and the two stars are for the DOP who somehow managed to film some scenes that looked better planned than what the rest of the movie delivered. After 100 minutes of this I hoped someone would erase all of me, and not just my brain, which the movie managed just fine.
Just stick with the Arnold-movie. You'll be better off.
Dune (2021)
The emperors new stillsuit-clothes.
I watched it last night and it delivered precisely what I expected: top-notch production design, set design, costumes and amazing visuals ... and I guess some okay performances (I actually liked Timothée Chalamet here, after hating him since seeing him in another movie I can't even remember what was).
However, I felt completely indifferent towards the story. I didn't care about the characters, their journey or the world they live in. Story-wise it just left me (mostly) completely dead inside. In all honesty, as much as I love science fiction, I've just never liked fantasy - and that's the category I think this fits in, more than sci-fi.
If we get a part two I will still watch it in the cinema, to get the full effect of the visuals. And indeed the visuals are the reason I'm rating this movie 7, but cause it looks fantastic and I can tell is pretty good story telling, so it's definitely "above average" ... but if I rated from "feelings" instead of "achivement" I'd probably only score it 5.
So, in short: I'm not falling over myself to sing praises about it, because this is just not for me. For me I'd take Blade Runner 2049 (or Sicario or Prisoners) over this and I can't imagine I'd ever want to watch it again.
Xtro (1982)
Haha, LOL.
That title should say perfectly what I think about this movie.
I've watched it 3 times now. First time when it was new, second time somewhere between then and now, and finally tonight - not because I remembered it as awesome but because I couldn't remember much and wanted to refresh my memory ... and now I wish I'd forgotten it totally.
It's got a few nice things about it - especially the weird alien on the road in the beginning of the movie ... and then of course Maryam d'Abo's breasts, but other than that I find it difficult to be positive about it.
It's an incoherent mess with a soundtrack from hell and I found it a chore to sit still for the measly 81 minutes it runs. Remember, this is from the same year that The Thing, Blade Runner and Poltergeist was also made, and - in all fairness - they all have a much higher budget, but this is SO cheap and ... well, bad, that I honestly can't recommend it. Hmm, on second thought perhaps I should have compared it with stuff like Basket Case or The Sword and the Sorcerer instead, but the bottom line is that "it's cheap and terrible and not even the special effects make it worth to sit through it (and I usually love this stuff)".
Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe (2020)
Yes. Yes, I'd watch it again.
I can see that not everyone is equally satisfied with this, but I loved it. Yeah, it's not perfect, but the jokes came at a high rate and I found it quite funny. However, while the songs seem longer and more well produced than in the series, many of them just didn't reach the same "heighs". Still, I loved it anyway - and compared to Bill and Ted Face the Music - which was released on the same day (which I also looked forward to) - I have to say that Phineas and Ferb the Movie felt more satisfying than the dudes third outing. I'm up for more ... from both though ;-)
Manifest (2018)
This is basically LOST ... just even more lost.
Like I said - this show is basically LOST, only set in a city instead of an island. Initially an intriguing mystery, but clearly the writers don't have a long-term plan and all in all it's a muddled mess. Season one was sorta okay, but season two was terrible. Plot going absolutely nowhere with too many questions and no answers ... and for every answer do given you get two more questions. This will allow it to go on forever. Well, hopefully it won't though. It's a typical NBC show - a nice premise and well produced, but ultimately going nowhere. I don't really like too many of the actors either. Everything involving the daughter is melodramatic teen drama and the little boy? Kill that damn annoying character already - he can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. Grace is also terrible. Basically I've held out for as long as I have because of Melissa Roxburgh - I have a bit of a crush on her ;-) But hopefully she will find a better show once this one is cancelled. And they can do that now - I've had enough and won't be back if there is a season 3 - there's much better TV out there than this.
Creepshow (2019)
Very dissapointed after the first 2 episodes (4 stories).
I don't get all tbe high scores of 10 for this show. Like some other reviewer said; "is this really the best ever" when seeing all those 10 scores. I've now watched 2 episodes, which is 4 stories, and based on those I find the show very mediocre and the feeling I get from the two first movies are not present here at all. This is just well-produced but uninspired shovelware. I'll keep on watching though - who knows ... it might get better.
Beyond White Space (2018)
Enjoyable and a lot less hopeless as I expected it to be.
The movie is far from perfect and I certainly didn't expect much from it, but I found it to be quite enjoyable. Yeah, so it's basically Moby Dick in space, on a low budget, with an underdeveloped script and questionable acting, but I didn't go in expecting Lawrence of Arabia ... and compared to some of the sci-fi-dross out there this one is not too bad. I didn't really like the sudden slasher element introduced towards the end - that was weird and underexplained, and didn't fit in at all, but overall I liked the movie.
La jetée (1962)
Interesting but felt long for just 28 minutes.
I've heard good things about this experimental short and through my deep interest in sci-fi I'm also quite aware of the classic movies it has inspired, so I thought I should give it a look.
I really found it a grind to get through, which for a movie with a running time of only 28 minutes is problematic, but I didn't really enjoy its experimental way of telling its story, so that detracts from my score.
But on the other hand I will give it extra points for its originality and handling of the whole time travelling situation and ultimately I have to score it as "middle of the road" with 5/10.
Definitely worth a look if you're into sci-fi and like stories about time travelling, and you might just like it more than I did.
The Tick (2016)
First half was ... full of injustice to The Tick.
I love The Tick and having looked forward to this new live version for what seems like ages - and now having watched the first half of season one - I unfortunately have to say that it doesn't deliver. Not for me anyway.
Disclaimer: I've never read the comic. But I have watched the animated series multiple times - and likewise with the live version from 2001. I just love the writing and that zany humor, but Amazon's 2017 just doesn't have that.
What we get here is a strange hybrid show that wants to be funny but at the same time also wants to be realistic and gritty. That just DOESN'T work. Here, instead of The Tick being the main character we get the neurotic mess that is Arthur as a main character, instead. Hey, Arthur was always like that ... but he was also always the sidekick. Now it's like The Tick is the sidekick ... and is just not very funny compared to the earlier incarnations of the show.
All respect to Peter Serafinowicz, whom I like as an actor, but in this case seems like a pale wannabe, a sad reminder that he cannot fill the shoes of Patrick Warburton, who was born to play the role. Alright, so the 2017 show does have considerably higher production values than the Patrick Warburton show had - that's very apparent ... but at least the 2001 show was funny. And this 2017 show just isn't. Not enough anyway.
I really hope they drop some of the realism and turn up the humor in the second half of the season. But if not, then it's time for a reboot ... again.
Spoooon.
Space Station 76 (2014)
Very different from what I expected.
There are apparently several fake reviews for this title so I thought I'd write one I felt was reasonable to counter that. :)
I'd read a couple of reviews of this movie before watching it and - apart from the apparently fake ones - some of them were quite negative. Could people really be right? -is it really that bad...because it looks good. I like that whole 70's Buck Rogers/Space 1999 look and love when film makers try to make movies that are set in a different time. I think Alien Trespass (2009) is a great example of that so I expected to like this as much as I liked Alien Trespass. So, did I?
Not really. I did get the vibe but it still felt a bit too stilted in many places. Matt Bomer was great and so was Liv Tyler. Patrick Wilson was good too but as with many of the other characters he was just a bit too hard to find believable.
As for the feel of the whole movie: it was surprisingly dark in it's tone. Absurdly so. That's the one thing that makes it both weird and bad but also very interesting. This is not really about the sci-fi but very much about the people on the space station. And they're as broken as you can possibly imagine. Hey, just like in real-life. ;-)
I mentioned Buck Rogers, Space 1999 and Alien Trespass - but there's one movie that has to be mentioned as well. Most of all this movie reminds me of John Carpenter's Dark Star (1974). Dark, absurd, awkward and permeated by the 70's from start to finish.
To sum all this up; did I like it? Yeah, kinda-sorta. Would I watch it again? Yes I would...but not anytime soon. Am I happy giving it a score of 7? No, not really - I think 6.5 would fit better - I'm feeling 6 may be too stingy as I liked some things about it...but perhaps 7 is too much. Well, I chose to vote 7 but now you know I would've preferred to vote slightly below that.
Prometheus (2012)
Not as good as I hoped for, but not as bad as I feared.
Just came back from watching it a little while ago.
Could it live up to what we hoped for? No Was it as good as we could hope for/expected of it? Yeah, think so. So, no, it's not perfect, but I kinda liked it anyway.
The story? - clearly a lot of thought has gone into making it and it does make sense...mostly. Unfortunately is has the same thing that most horror movies also do - people doing something VERY stupid ...that doesn't make ANY sense - other than advance the plot and f00king things up even more for the characters ...and doesn't even bother to TRY to explain WHY. Unfortunatey it can't rise above that very basic stupidity and that's too bad. I'd hoped for more.
But a lot of things works really well too. Despite a few scenes that really rubbed me the wrong way for being a little too familiar compared to scenes from earlier installments - I like how it meshes really well with the already established universe. Mythology established in Alien 3 are here, and built upon, while setting up its own stuff...and even something that establishes something major from Aliens are set up here as well.
...and leaving it wide open for a sequel, naturally...which I hope we get. :-)
However, overall it suffers from being almost too slick. Like too many other "big movies" it has, what I call, a "hyper-optimised" script. It's predictable, unrelenting in its forward storytelling momentum, and nothing is there by chance - everything matters and the time of red herrings and "fun little things" are a thing of the past. We don't get "small insignificant things" anymore - only big plot holes that are unexplained and too big to ignore.
Visually it's stunning though. Nothing effects-wise to complain about.
Some negative stuff there, but how could I not mention it. But I loved it and I'm looking forward to seeing it again (and again). I won't splash out extra on 3D the next time, though. The 3D, while good, is in no way needed for anything and although it may add depth to the world, you won't lose anything by only watching it in 2D.
Kataude mashin gâru (2008)
Buckets of blood...and then some.
Haha, I just finished watching this and felt I wanted to write a comment on the movie - my first IMDb comment BTW.
When I saw the trailer a few months back I knew instantly that I wanted to see this movie when it came out...and it did...so I did...and I just finished...so what did I think?
Well, it's low budget and not especially well acted. On top of that it's insanely OVERacted - people are hysterical (in a bad way)...which isn't that bad really when it comes to it - it kinda fits the movie very well, but when they actually do try to act seriously they just come of as ...BAD...sometimes even excruciatingly bad.
But what it lacks in quality it more than makes up for in quantity...and pretty girls. :-)
- the acting is crazy, clichéd, over the top, completely nuts...and pretty inventive. So are the violence and effects - not terribly good, but okay and completely cartoony. Really bad...in a good way. I've probably seen more blood somewhere else (although I can't remember where that would be) but this movie seems to try to overdo everything that went before it - gallons of blood are pumped at high-pressure through severed limbs - again and again, and the movie WILL make you think of Evil Dead 2, Brain Dead, Kill Bill, Terminator 2, Resident Evil and Planet Terror. Yup, it's that crazy.
So, despite not actually getting too many points for acting I gotta say I was pretty well entertained - after only 2:11 minutes I was laughing out loud, after about 4 minutes I had tears streaming from my eyes because of it's outrageously overdone gory action. It's THAT much over the top.
Oh, and the girls. WOW! The two main ones are insanely beautiful - especially the one playing Aki...no dammit - both of them! (I can't choose). :-) The other ones are also quite cute as well, so if you're a guy and you like the above mentioned movies you'll like this one too.
Have fun. -)
