Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
Beautifully animated, brilliantly told prequel to the great classic
What can I say? This movie is one of the best I've ever seen. First of all, the animation in this movie, combined with the 3D effect, was absolutely stunning and breathtaking. I actually believed that I was there, in the land of Oz. It was so detailed, vibrant and colorful, really popping out of the screen and bringing the beauty to life. The variety too was also amazing. The animation wasn't just colorful and happy, but also dark and sinister. Each animated object seemed perfectly designed and brought to life, I loved it. Secondly, the acting was brilliant. James Franco did a great job with his role of the somewhat egotistical, selfish, cowardly yet somehow good-hearted Kansas magician, he was so believable. Rachel Weisz was fantastic, her sassy and bold performance as Evanora the Wicked Witch was brilliant too. Each actor devoted lots of emotion and skill to their role, and it all worked perfectly. Last but certainly not least, the story and content itself. Wow. I don't even know what to say. It was well written and well thought out, with each detail working perfectly. I thought it was a brilliant prequel because it followed on from all of the original themes, but added some extra magic to it, like the people of Oz resembling the people of their reality, the fraudulent wizard, the witches, etc. It explained wonderfully how the wizard of Oz came to be. At times, it was a little predictable, but it still kept me on the edge of my seat. There were moments of humor, joy, sadness, romance and adventure, all rolled into one perfectly. The plot tied in really well and fit perfectly with the original. It's hard to explain, but it was just so awesome. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking for anything from mild entertainment to rich, amazing masterpieces. A movie to satisfy all, and a must-see.
Identity Thief (2013)
Just average, really
I went to see "Identity Thief" a few days ago. Overall, it was not much to rave about, but an entertaining movie nonetheless. I thought that the acting was pretty good, with some comedic, mildly interesting characters. The plot wasn't bad: it started off pretty interesting, and I found myself warming towards the movie, but as it progressed, it really just turned into a long road trip, and the action and humor became very similar. What annoyed me was the lack of actual humor, and the over-used profanities. Most of the jokes might have been alright, but in their context, it seemed like the writers were going overboard. Also, the acting made the humor sound a bit forced, which reduced the effect of the humor. I also feel that the movie relied heavily on profanity to get their point across, which I disliked. Overall, average acting, humor and plot, nothing special, but if you want to kill a bit of time, I suggest renting this on DVD because it's probably not worth the cinema.
The Hunger Games (2012)
A good effort, but still disappointing
Firstly, I want to congratulate everyone who worked on this thing. It was good. I won't deny that. But it wasn't the best.
The books are quite difficult to adapt, so you have to commend Gary Ross for trying. When you read the Hunger Games, it is like Katniss is speaking to you, running through everything she experiences for you. That's quite difficult to do in a movie-you can't REALLY have Katniss talking through the whole thing.
I have to say, if I hadn't read the books, I probably would not have understood it as well. The story is more shown than explained. Yes, you find out the reasoning behind The Hunger Games, but it is never elaborated.
The relationships between characters aren't as strong as they could be. The important ones, like Rue and Prim needed a lot more attention than they were given, in order to understand how upsetting it was. Also, Peeta isn't as much of a kind-hearted in-love person in the movie as he is in the books. And Haymitch was NOT as drunk and crazy as he should have been.
I think that rather than spending time on the Gamemakers, they should have developed these characters more.Because if the basic story is not all there, then adding more is useless. I wouldn't have minded if this movie had run for 4 hours-if they had gotten the characters spot on.
The shaky camera thing was annoying too...
One more thing-I think the chariot costumes were a bit underrated-I was expecting something bigger, bolder and flashier than that.
There were positive points in this movie though. I believe the reaping scene was perfect and so were the outfits and acting in the interviews. Katniss was done beautifully by Jennifer Lawrence-she was BRILLIANT!
Overall, quite good, but lacking those details that could have made it so good. You should watch though! But read the books first!
Tangled (2010)
Excuse me guys-best movie EVER!
I don't know what you're all talking about! Tangled is an excellent movie, with a deeply touching plot and the most wonderful music (well OK, it's not amazing but still very good) and characters that bring life to the once known as boring fairytale Rapunzel. SouthSideChgo-Disney puts twists in every story! That's why people like it! You should appreciate their creativity! Personally I love the contrast between low-life thief and high-flying princess-it simply shows its not your position that decides your love and personality! I really love Flynn's charming personality and Rapunzel's tough-chic yet sweet style of doing things. Pascal and Maximus are two of the most amusing animal characters I have ever seen. The animation is smooth and gives a real fresh feeling for such an old tale. The original songs are entertaining. It's literally flawless! Tangled certainly beats any other animated Disney movie-a fresh, fun twist on a old, almost gloomy tale. Well done Disney!
Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back (2010)
Not cool, guys.
my kids took me to the cinema to watch this.
we hadnt seen any reviews or anything we hadnt even seen the first one but i thought it would be good.
when i got there:
first it was kinda boring
then all the characters especially kilowatt-were annoying, boring and unbelievable
and finally it wasn't even funny.
so i suggest you don't waste dhs50 on this movie because its not worth it.
the only thing that is cool is the animation, zartog and the colors.
