Red 11 (2018)
Watch the docu series first...
This is less an isolated indie flick, but more an inspirational creative journey. Robert Rodriguez goes back to his roots, making a movie on a dime with the simplest means possible to show, what can be done, with just a few thousand bucks. The messages is clear: if you want to create, start with what you got.
Rodrigues therefore revisits memories from his time as being a lab rat to get enough money to fund his first movie "El Mariachi" as the base scenario for this small Twilight Zone like episode.
For me it worked best being watched with the acompaning series "a rebel without a crew - the robert rodriguez filmschool". Generally I would recommend this movie to all inspiring creatives, who wants to get started on their creative journey.
I, Robot (2004)
clever, cool scifi-movie
Alex Proyas and Will Smith do a movie inspired by Isaac Asimov. That can only turn out as a typical flat summer blockbuster or something really cool beyond our imagination.
In case of "I, Robot" I was a bit skeptic at first and finally nearly blown away by the result. This movie looks awesomely good, has fun moments, really shows a believable future and keeps you tight to your chair. We have the cool Will Smith as a robot-hating cop, a lovely Bridget Moynahan - a new face -, some really cool CGI-Stuff and some breathtaking camera-moves that rocks. And some things you might think about for some time. And even if you say, that we already see some of that before, you won't have seen that so well put together!
"I, Robot" is one hell of a ride. That's how an enjoyable summer blockbuster must be like!
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Think big alienships can't be topped? They can! Beware of To-Tomorrow...
Roland Emmerich, the Master of Desaster is back. After dead soldiers, Egyt-Aliens, merciless invasions of the third kind and giant-green-monsters, this time the whole northern hemisphere is to be destroyed ... and no one will stop it.
Is the scenario of another iceage truly fictional? The danger is more real than one might think, even if we still got hundreds of years and the climatic chances wouldn't be that drastical, this may happen one day.
Even the movie has its small little hidden messages, it is still what it should be: damn good entertainment. The forces of nature threatens you, the struggle of survival thrills you, the drama on the streets warms your heart and a few moments still brings you to laugh (for example (small spoiler!) the mexican close their border due to the americans flee into the south). Oh, and don't forget the small little lovestory.
The cast is this time not as famous, but still does a great job. Dennis Quaid in the lead, Jake Gyllenhaal proves that he can do more than just talking to giant rabbits, with the allays great Ian Holm and the sweet newcomer Emmy Rossum.
This time Emmerich focused just on a small bunch of people, which was definetly a wise doing. Because of that the story seems not as much constructed as in ID4.
The effects look breathtaking, you have charackters you feel for and even the movie is quite dark, there is a glimpse of light at the end. To cut a long story short: if you liked Stargate and ID4 you won't be dissapointed. This cool movie will sweep you away...
Cypher (2002)
stylish, cool, innovative, futuristic Spy-Thriler
I saw CYPHER on the German "Fantasy Filmfest" and was blown away. This Thriller is the second feature film of the director and again an absolute Genre-Hit. With his cool look and his fabulous pictures, CYPHER lure the audience together with the hero into a sticky, seemingly not escapeable web and keeps the questions till the end. And - not as the open end we came along in cube - we get a cool solutions to the puzzles. Again all cast is well picked, especially Jeremy Northam in the lead and Lucy Liu and once again David Hewlett, who got a very small but nonetheless cool character to play. A must see movie!
