Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)
Good old fashioned Muppets fun!
Watched this having no idea about the plot, besides some spin on the original Haunted Mansion movie, and was pleasantly surprised. It was funny, beautiful looking and somehow interesting enough despite running at around 50 minutes.
Kermits voice is slightly off, but ignore the negative reviews because Kermit barely features as the main story follows Gonzo and Peppa. Will Arnett as the host is hilarious and shined everytime he was on screen, playing against the absurdity of the Muppets and the ghosts he felt right in his element.
Definitely recommend this for anyone who loves the Muppets, silly comedy or fans of Arnett.
Mark of the Vampire (1935)
Enjoyable for lovers of 30s cinema.
Mark of the Vampire is going to be enjoyable for any lovers of 30s cinema or the great vampire himself. The movie didn't change the game or do anything new but still maintained a good ending while having some good moments of back and forth between a well put together cast.
Costumes, sets and effects held to the level of expectation for the run of black and white horror, some nice use of shadow and darkness that is a staple.
Overall it isn't one I would watch again, or even recommend due to the slow momentum it falls into around the middle of the movie. But for an hour, it was a fun little movie.
The Lost Boys (1987)
Incredible 80s Vampire Fun
Having waited as long as I did to watch this I was expecting a good movie, what I got was a wonderfully enjoyable 80s horror that combined vampires with the Goonies and left me grinning when the credits rolled. This movie felt like a love letter saying goodbye to the 80s movie tropes while hugging those long music montage segments ane dramatic landscape shots of the LA coast.
The acting was great with a stellar cast, namely the Corey's both putting in their best with some hilarious lines and physical acting. Premise isn't something you've never encountered if you are an avid watcher of horror but the mix of horror, gore and humour made this one of the more enjoyable movies I've seen in recent memory.
Sick (2022)
Take an idea and beat you over the head with it.
I really wanted this movie to be good, slasher movies have been dying off in quality for a while and this, from the trailers at least, seemed to be promising. But 15 minutes in and I knew trouble was on the way, yes the Covid setting was always going to come up but the way the plot device was just beaten to death needlessly was tiring.
Acting was fine but absolutely nobody stood out in a movie of unlikeable or completely frustrating characters, DJ was the only likeable person and even then he was just used as another object to raise the stakes for the final girls.
Overall, I would not recommend it unless you really like the idea of Covid being made even more irritating.
Walk of Shame (2014)
Enjoyable and Flfunny because of Banks
Did not know what to expect walking in having no seen a single clip or trailer for this Elizabeth Banks comedy, but I was pleasantly surprised. It got more than a few big laughs throughout and the performance from Banks was, as you'd expect, enjoyable and hilarious.
Apart from a couple of scenes that create a weird sexually unsafe atmosphere for the lead, it was a good solid late night comedy that I would definitely recommend to any fans of the genre or cast. The takeaway message was kind of lost on me, something about living the story and not just reading it, but it felt unimportant by the time the credits rolled.
Spirited (2022)
Good retelling but lacking as a musical.
For the story as a retelling, it did enough different to other Christmas movies to feel worthwhile watching and coupled with the great comedic chemistry between the cast it was a fun watch.
What truly left me feeling as though this film would never be revisited was the lack of diversity in the songs. Every musical number felt the same as the last and with the constant shots of the same tap dancing, it felt very repetitive. Visually it was very eye catching, the comedy landed, the acting was solid from all involved and the story had a nice spin on the old tale, but unfortunately as a musical this felt very flat.
The Guilty (2021)
Brilliant film that I would never watch again.
Having not seen the original, I came into this movie completely unaware of the plot and I left with my jaw on the ground. Gyllenhaal gives one of the THE most realistic human performances I have ever seen, to the point that it was anxiety inducing at times watching him break down and gasp for breath between words.
Plot was great, it was easy to become fixated on the story before the twist, so naturally it hit me our of nowhere that this was not the case after all. Great voice work by some recognisable actors on the calls he receives/makes and a cameo from Paul Dano that should make fans of his work happy.
Overall I would recommend this movie to any thriller or drama fans, or fans of Gyllenhaal as he gives in my opinion his best ever raw performance, but having felt every emotion with the actor and rode the frenzy of anxiety and stomach ache, I could never do that to myself again another watch.
Solid 8/10 claustrophobic movie.
Boo (2005)
Easily the worst horror movie I have ever seen.
I will give any film a chance, horror movies more-so get extra leg room due to their suspended realities, but some movies are just so unbelievably poor that they can't be redeemed and Boo is definitely one of them.
The acting was atrocious to the point that every character blended together into some annoying idiotic blank slate, the effects felt dated even for 2005 budget horrors and the premise was so all over the place that it become a chore to even try to figure it out.
I've watched some truly awful films and felt short changed, this is in the handful I would claim to be the worst, if you are reading this before watching I would suggest you find something else (Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, better in every sense).
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Please ignore the other reviews and give it a go.
This show has been funny, cute and fleshing out a character that was a staple in the comics setting her up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm loving the chemistry between characters, the music and casting. Some really great real life topics addressed within the realms of fantasy that aren't insisted upon, for example She Hulk discussing feeling unsafe walking home alone before she was powered up.
Some reviews are seemingly from those upset for sinister reasons (female lead, discussing women's issues etc) because 1 star for a show like this is ridiculous.
Please ignore the other reviews and give it a go, it's entertaining and enjoyable for a more paced Marvel expansion.
Beneath (2013)
Easily the worst film I've ever seen.
Terrible actors, even worse script and plot filled with more holes than the boat they are trapped on. Impossible to like any of the characters despite the directors attempt to make them "real" they all instead appear as empty headed clichés.
I am not opposed to budget movies, especially horror movies, but this was beyond the reach of saving. Please do not watch this film.
Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984)
Had zero idea this was a comedy, pleasantly surprised.
Had absolutely no idea this movie was a comedy and enjoyed it once that fact was made evident, almost 2 minutes into the movie.
Vincent Price was great as usual and although hardly featured was definitely one of the highlights.
Watching it in 2021 and you'll definitely cringe a few times at some really outdated jokes (rape scene, racial jokes, lots of homophobic slurs) in but that's to be expected from a spoof movie made in the 80s.
A Classic Horror Story (2021)
Just Not Enjoyable.
I'm a big horror fan and don't shy away from the gore, this seemed like something I would enjoy. Classic story of travellers getting ambushed and hunted by an unseen enemy in unknown terrain. This movie crashed at the midway point.
The plot makes absolutely zero sense and the acting from the main villain (no spoilers) was just woeful.
Basically, It was not as clever as it wanted to be and in the end it was just not enjoyable.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Great commentary piece on consumption clumsily hidden in an enjoyable zombie movie.
Great commentary piece on consumption clumsily hidden in an enjoyable zombie movie. The movie made no suggestions it was taking itself seriously, the acting was great as expected from such a stellar cast, the zombies felt differently to those normally portrayed and the plot was captivating enough to keep me entertained.
I would absolutely recommend this movie for fans of both the genre and the actors. Adam Driver was great and Bill Murray was such a delight to watch. Really enjoyed this one.
Fear Street: 1666 (2021)
Solid movie with gory horror moments.
Ignoring all the over analysing complaints from those clearly taking a teen horror movie centered around a gay couple. Yes it has overt LGBTQ themes, that's the characters and it's a large plot point. If you are that put off by that then this movie is the least of your problems.
This was a fun movie and a really enjoyable finale in the trilogy, I enjoyed the horror elements including the brutal death scenes. Big future in the works for main couple and I hope people will give this a fighting chance.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Bizarre and not in a good way.
This film straddled the line of being overly complicated and absolutely bizarre, the characters have zero depth to them and it makes the events seem absolutely uninteresting.
The main twist can be seem coming a mile away and the reveal, coupled with a really unnecessary rape scene, are terribly done.
I have given the movie 4 stars purely because of the acting from the main heroine and the visual effects.
Chernobyl (2019)
Spectacular, the very pinnacle of TV.
Chernobyl was easily one of the most captivating shows I've ever watched, it was perfect. The acting despite being predominately Westerners was perfectly cast for the period and the costume designs took me way back to the life and death of Pripyat.
It is absolutely the best way to entertain yourself while learning about the tragic events and aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Shameful
Absolutely shameful inflating of a tragic death related to mental illness. "Internet detectives" are a disgraceful addition to what should have been an analysis of a young womans last few moments and what the authorities have learned from her death. Shameful.
Freaks - Du bist eine von uns (2020)
Good movie that could have been great.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect going into Freaks, the story was solid and had very few boring moments. Cornelia was the highlight of the movie as the only fleshed out and remotely likeable character. I am glad I watched it and had a good time, however I probably wouldn't watch it again.
The villain of the piece was extremely bland and his turn felt so abrupt that I hardly had time to acknowledge his change in persona. Bad acting on his behalf or perhaps a bad script for him.
Good movie that could have been great if they could have developed the side characters more.
Errementari (2017)
Incredible Visuals and Griping Story.
Visuals are breathtaking and unlike anything I've seen in modern cinema, the story is a little drawn out but absolutely gripping with a genuine sense of dread.
The cast, especially Usue, give absolutely everything in the way of delivery from start to finish. Wonderfully fantastical story with visceral effects and atmosphere.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Unrivalled in modern cinema.
One of the greatest movies ever made, one that absolutely changed the landscape of modern cinema with its juxtaposed mini stories converging into one truly unforgettable masterpiece.
Black Water: Abyss (2020)
Uneasy and enjoyable despite boring plot.
Nothing special about the story, no explanation as to why the group are going cave diving and absolutely zero character development in any meaningful way besides the midway twist.
Crocodile/Gator is probably the most interesting character in the movie and the visuals for this key moments are a clever blend of CGI and real life shots of Crocs/Gators.
The ending tried its best to end on an almost shocking twist but just feels forced and unnecessarily elaborate. Watch it for the claustrophobic cave scenes which are uneasy and the cool nature smashing Croc/Gator that destroys some innocent Aussies.
1922 (2017)
Extremely drawn out.
While I absolutely enjoyed the movie for what it was, a retelling of a great Stephen King novel, the movies slow burn build up was unfortunately a mood killer.
The actors are enjoyably uncomfortable to watch interact with one another but the film doesn't quite find the right balance of atmosphere and progression that it needed to reel me in.
The Addams Family (2019)
Great Adaptation of a Family Classic.
While unlikely to be a very memorable movie, the animated rehashing of The Addams Family left me and my wife having a good time. It's a fun, very easy on the eye, cheap laugh for all ages.
I don't think I would be able to find any specific moment that stayed in my mind afterwards, it's fun but could have been better with a shorter runtime and sharper story.
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Strange and somehow awesome.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect having skipped the trailers, Nicholas Cage puts on one of his strangest performances to date capped off with a truly strange dance number.
Monsters are definitely unsettling but really don't seem like machines, they look and behave like theme park characters.
It's a B movie with a small budget and an absolutely ludacris plot. It's an awesome watch once you've switched off any analytical part of your brain. We need more movies like this.
The Meg (2018)
Definitely a movie about a giant shark.
It's not often that I'm not entertained while watching giant monster flicks. Meg has a great cast (best performance coming from Rainn Wilson) but the story leaves them with little to work with.
The shark itself is ominous and imposing but doesn't have the menace that our friend from Jaws brings to the screen. Just melts into a pretty shallow movie.
