Little Bone Lodge (2023)
It was great until it wasn't (ENDING)
The Movie is definitely a watch. Although, you get the idea, that something is wrong with the hosts moment the brothers knock on their door. The pace was good as well. Throughout the suspense was kept well hidden and keeps you guessing. The whole thing falls flat for me was 'the ending'. I just couldn't wrap my head around it. The ending was mostly illogical and understandably made to stick with viewers after. But i think it had the opposite effect on me. It felt far stretched and a low blow. Exchanging one set of prisoners for the others didn't make any sense at all. I wish the ending was something else.
Dahaad (2023)
Brilliant but Sonakshi was misfit, ruined it.
Plot is gripping, the setup is apt as well - a state which has a historic skewed female ratio, girls are considered burden, because of demand of dowry, and above all, this is so much influenced by the caste factor. The only single blot and the miscast that jumps right out of screen is Sonakshi. Sonakshi isn't the actor she believes she is. She manages to carry just one single expression all along the series. Just one blank expression. I don't have any hate for her. But she utterly failed to grasp the whole character. She couldn't get into the role. She was still in that Akira girl mode, Whole story, screenplay and the rest of the cast were brilliant. Sonakshi wasn't the right choice. I'm sorry. You can give it a go for the rest of the good things.
Summer of 84 (2018)
Such a stupid ending.
It could have been a great movie. It had most of the good elements - Coming of age, teenage jokes, suspense, mystery, thriller, friendship. But ALAS, ending is so illogical. So twisted. It's really not justified. Such a good chance missed.
Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020)
Deserves to be in good books. Raises many questions!
Ok, so I completed the binge session. Firstly, read this, There are some moral questions which a viewer may find indulged in. How are our actions justified even if for just cause? Secondly, even if one has paid for the past sins, does this mean there is no redemption for the evil doer? Thirdly, we got to talk about mental issues in more nuanced way. So, now for the show.
Here is what I thought about the show. The acting is top notch. Each cast nailed the role well. ( Special mention to Nitya, she was so convincing in her hindi pronounciation, Amit Sadh is superb, he is bloody intense. ) Overall, story is not the strongest of the suit. Still, this weak story is carried well by actors. Another let down is the pace of the series. It is dragged at times. It feels stretched at many times just to appear convincing. But that may become the low point for some. Even this slow pace is carried well by actors and the background score. Background score keeps the tempo going of otherwise dim paced thriller. But I think the slow pace was intentional. So, those who prefer slow paced theme may enjoy it more than I did. So, yes, you can give it a go.
Penguin (2020)
Pile of nonsense thrown at you.
I was so so excited for it ever since the trailer dropped. But I'm so sorry, This has no story. None. No justified motivations behind the story. Only 3 stars are for visuals, cinematography is top notch. But it couldn't salvage the rest. The background score is added where it's not necessary, it's only noise/loud at times. Background is more pronounced in first half and quite blank during second half. Screenplay is disaster. Sound effect ( breaths/hmm/sighs) are so loud and added continuously to the point that it tires you, plus these 'breath' sounds are only of main protagonist, rhythm. So, it means that the other characters don't breathe? Whatever is shown is idiotic(organ trade, a single man job? & Only two kids missing? Question gameby Doc?, Why??? , He isn't even a significant character, why waste precious screen time? ) Go watch, waste your time and come back to this review. The most hilarious sequence is climax 'game' - the killer doc asks the question to the main protagonist, rhythm? - "how do you get this courage?" I mean what the hell? Movie attempts to be too many things at the same time....
Psychological? - fail.
Thriller? - boring.
Mystery? - there is none. You cannot create a killer without justifying his/her existence.
There are so many logical falls -
1. How did doc know that the kid responds to commands if he did not kidnap him?
2. How does doc knows all the answers?
3. How can you barge into a hospital, throw things around, kidnap kid and still guards are sleeping.
4. The final reveal is a joke. We all go through the experience of comparison with other children all our lives. We don't turn into killers.
5. Her(KIDNAPPER'S) husband somehow follows her to jungle? (Yea, right). How did she manage such an elaborate setup in jungle?
6. Dog is the go to detective in movie. If he can sniff so many things. Why did he not sniff in the first place when the kid was kidnapped eariler.
This is a mess. Save your time please.
Chhapaak (2020)
Haters have invaded the movie.
This movie deserved to be made. In a society where the man still thinks he owns the woman and can do as he please if the woman decides to show him mirror, this was much needed movie. Alas, the ratings show that patriarchy, hate, vile mind is deep seeded in people. They have become mindless in hate. This movie didn't deserve the political backlash. An actor is free to express her views. How does that is a criteria to judge the work?
Ghost Stories (2020)
NOT ghost stories, only Dibakar shines.
First things first, there is hardly any ghost/scare element. The movie revolves around thrill/mystery domain. The concept of anthology horror in bollywood is not new & unique, it's as old as darna mana hai(2003). As such, this movie doesn't add anything new or breathtaking (imagine even after 15+ years). Here are the stories rated.
1. Dibakar banerjee - you beauty. It stands tall amidst all other stories. What!! perfect story telling. All my stars are for him only. Actors added to the narration. He perfectly narrates a story in which you can 'think' and find something happening in our contemporary society.
2. Zoya Akhtar - it was predictable from the word GO. Only standout is jahnvi, she really acted well. She didn't overdo it & really fit in the role.
3. Anurag - i really wanted to like it but couldn't. It's a plain story which lacks atmosphere.
4. Karan Johar - I'm so sorry but this one is not scary at all. The story falls right through the roof. Usual cliches - (doors opening on own, creeky doors, maid with flashlight on face) over reliance on background music because you know there is nothing in this story.
Overall, if you're looking for horror story.. you may be disappointed. Only if you watch without any expectations, you may find it okay to watch.
Oththa Seruppu Size 7 (2019)
Simple with a twist story, told EXTRAORDINARILY!
You ain't seen nothing like this before. Period. This is the movie which keeps you gripped all along. The emotions run high. You become sympathetic to the protagonist , at times you get angry at his choices, at times you feel sorry for his innocence. Character building is beautiful. Even if you can't see any other person, you can exactly know their character through their voice. Such a is the direction.
Overall, must see. Best Tamil movie in a long time.
Typewriter (2019)
Poor story carried by strong actors. Still one time watch.
This review comes from a lover of a horror genre. The acting, direction and cintematography is beautiful. Characters begin to take a grip on you from the very first episode. But as the end approaches.. it all goes downhill. There are so many loopholes in the story. So many plots left undone (blackmailing scandal for example). Plus, the ending will make you laugh. It was a mockery, it was as if production team ran out of ideas in the end and wanted to finish it as quickly as possible. Overall, if you have nothing to watch you can watch it for the sake of acting and an ok story.
Mirzapur (2018)
One time watch. Less 'Original-human' characters.
Direction - Superb, No question asked.
Acting - Top notch - Pankaj Tripathi proves his mettle, Ali fazl displayed his diversity with the dialect and someone who is in constant drug withdrawal. These two are the standout in the series.
Story - Takes the path of the decisions taken by the characters. Here only lies the negative of the series.
Regarding negatives -
Characters - negatives of everything, extreme of everything. Stereotype of everything is thrown at you in the name of originality.
Munna - Typical spoilt brat with handful of comic sidekicks. one who wants the riches of the family.
Bhaiyaji ''Kaleen'' - Calm headed headmaster who knows it all - how to rise in business?, how to handle everyone, When to attack and when Not, still - he will fall short in key moments. defying his character.
Family Patriarch - wheelchair ridden head is shown with few typical dialogues.
IPS officer - hard man, who smokes, simply smiles and acts.
Politicians - money hogging and corrupt.
lady mistress Kaleen - unnecessary role! simply to have s** at home and let family patriarch listen to their escapades.
and many more... you can guess the kind of story with such characters. This is what we have seen since long before in Bollywood movies.
put all of them together and you get mirzapur, with such character there can only be one story which is 'automatic', no originality, no humane element-which means unpredictability, mistakes and all human characters. Sadly, the series will not longer excite in longer run. It's an one time watch.
