Aranybulla (2022)
Abysmal. Just utterly terrible.
Almost completely devoid of creativity and art. Perplexing directorial and editing decisions all over the place. No arcs of any kind just expositions and boring narration.
But the worst of the worst is that the basic, unimaginative "plot" is constantly interrupted with documentary-like explanations or "fun" history facts. These constant interruptions take you out of any possible suspension of disbelief you might have achieved. And believe me, it'd be a gargantuan achievement in itself. Whoever were involved in this decision should hang their head in shame. This is kindergarten level series production.
Instead of "show, don't tell" they have gone with "tell, tell, tell", expositions over expositions with stale dialog. The viewer is taken for being completely brain dead.
This barely deserves a 1/10, guess it's for the creators showing up for work? Whatever, just don't waste your time with this garbage.
Intet (2022)
Good premise badly executed
The movie starts with an immersion break right at the first couple of minutes when an 8th grader delivers a speech and set of ideas which took Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and Marx several decades to get to. Right after that the other kids respond with an equally unbelieveable idea. The movie lost me there at the beginning.
The child actors do not work well, but other flaws of the movie might indicate bad directing.
The pacing is off, many things happen without a care to explain, sometimes the emotions are completely off and baffling. I get it that the movie intends to shock and sometimes it achieves that but it's wholly undeserved and selfish.
Some exciting and thoughtful narratives, questions and answers are left in the dark, not articulated enough or sometimes not at all.
Maybe this is just a story that does not work as a movie.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Dreadful
It's only saving grace is that it looks good for it's time. Everything else is below avarage. Absolutely boring, especially for an action movie. It has like 15 minutes of action in total. The plot is forced, just as the dialog. Everything is inconsequential, most of all the ending.
It has one touching scene in the last act but that is taken away after a couple of minutes.
But most of all it's dumb and shallow. Skip this borefest. It's essentially the last original Apes movie, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, made with modern technology and a budget.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Weak side characters hinder this flick heavily
For me this one is barely 7/10 but it could be much better than that. There is a lame or boring scene for nearly every genuinely great one. There are things to love here. Crowe and Bale are very good, though the latter is somewhat unutilized. Portman and Hemsworth are okay, or even decent.
However the most utilized side characters are horrible. They have nothing to do in the script, they are just there. Korg is so forced and shallow that his character singlehandedly ruins many otherwise decent scenes. He is just an idiot, and a tiresome one. He's been in like 3 movies by now and we don't know anything about him, except that he is dumb and overstays his welcome. Valkyrie, while a bit more interesting has also next to nothing to do here. They take way too many screen time from others who are more deserving.
I get it, you need some funny sidekicks for these kind of movies but none of them is funny. Taking a couple of the Guardians of the Galaxy on the road would have been so much better, because they are actually good characters. Rocket and Groot worked so well with Thor in Infinity War, there was chemistry there. There is none with Korg and not much with Valkyrie. It is a huge missed opportunity to play around more with the cast of GotG and this God Butcher fella. Korg is also some kind of a narrator and it's just not working. The stories he narrates should have been explored and shown instead. Feels like both him and Valkyrie were there just for fulfilling a political agenda.
On the other hand, Thor and Jane worked for me and they had some genuinely good moments. Some of them unusually real and deep for a Thor movie and I'd like to see more of these. Same goes for Gorr. The bad guy had a believeable motivation and all the main characters evolved a bit.
The jokes and the dialogs are passable, the plot is decent and the action is mostly good. I would like to see a cut with much less Korg and Valkyrie and more Thor and Jane. And more Gorr and Zeus as well, of course. This multiple Thor thing is a bit silly but executed well and there's also a strong hint why it happens(though it can be missed easily).
It's a fun movie with some parts on the more serious side. It's still the second best Thor installment for me and it could be on par with Ragnarök if the side characters wouldn't be a waste of space or outright annoyance. Goldblum, Hulk, Heimdall, Karl Urban and even Valkyrie were so much better in that one. That's the only difference for me, though it affects the movie substantially.
This would be a slightly above avarage movie if not for some genuinely heartfelt and good scenes. Those make this a weak 7/10 for me. With better side characters this could have been on par with Ragnarök.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 15: The Believer (2020)
Fantastic episode, blows like a seismic charge!
First of all those who complain about the face scan really just want to blindly hate on something or try to be too smart. No one ever says the terminal works for "imperial faces" only, it just has to scan the user's first. It's perfectly valid that the scan is saved and uploaded to the system, much like a biometric user log or something. Use your imagination, people!
Now that is out of the way, once again it is a remarkable achievement of creating that special Star Wars vibe. I agree that it's up there with the best Star Wars material in a long time.
It is action-packed, humor is well-balanced and at times kinda gritty. As I expected, without Grogu on the state, Din feels like he is out of his comfort zone and develops further as a character by leaps and bounds. He basically forfeits his beliefs for his affection towards his little foundling. You can feel his dogmatic beliefs slowly chipping away.
Great performances all around, gave me chills from time to time.
