Latter Days (2003)
I know a road paved with good intentions...
Interesting to note, that although this movie seems to have been made with good intentions, it only seems to make the problem that existed before even worse. On the one hand, you have ultra-conservative members of the LDS Church who think this movie is a load of crap, but have they watched it? Probably not. Then you have the people who are either gay and were never members of the church, or they were excommunicated when they "came out." This second group of people tend to be bitter and let the world know that the LDS Church exiled them because they were different. Well...yeah...you're different, but you were exiled for a different reason than that, and clearly, this movie is made from the view point of the second group. So now, you have ultra-conservatives that are even MORE aghast that something like this is made, then you have the "gay" community who is even more angry at the ultra-conservatives for "bashing" their way of life. To be honest, I was an LDS missionary, and when I saw the trailer for this movie, my first thought was, "that's ridiculous." I thought the same thing when I heard about "Orgazmo." I just wish people would stop dragging the LDS church through the mud, saying they hate gays. Anyone who understands the excommunication process would know better.
Brigham (1977)
this is THE worst movie about the LDS church EVER!!!
I had the misfortune of watching this movie while I was serving a mission for the LDS Church. Contrary to the comment by Kolob, this movie was neither historically accurate, nor entertaining. The cinematography was crap, the editing was crap, the acting was crap. Please do not accept this trash as any accurate representation of the great men that Brigham Young and Joseph Smith were. It is certainly a discredit to their memories for something like this film to be made. Coincidentally, this same movie was edited a bit, then changed to "made for TV" under the title "Savage Journey." That movie (because it is the same movie) is also a blatant work of nonsense. Nice try though. The only semblance this movie has to actual historical fact is that, yes, Brigham Young did have a beard.
The Salton Sea (2002)
Reality...
The people responsible for making this film obviously have spent some time in the Salton City because that is EXACTLY what it is like. Everyone I run into comments that they think the Salton Sea is where serial killers and drug dealers go to never be found again. I actually ate lunch there once...and seeing this movie reminded me of that day. The movie itself is a very well written and directed. If you like movies with revenge, plot twists, and the reality of how messed up you can actually be on speed, this movie is for you.
