The Hunt (2020)
It Was Good, But Also Bad
I was really looking forward to Emma Roberts being in this movie, so wasn't happy at all with the plot. She may not be a massively huge Actress, but she's a favorite for a lot of us. She was great in American Horror Story.
The Hunt wasn't quite what I expected, but it was entertaining. Some people are complete nutcases and there's a surprising comedy in many parts. They work quite well.
But don't bother betting on who is gong to survive. It's literally a free-for-all and anyone you thought was going to be a hero dies in the first 15 minutes. Some people are really badass and awesome in it. There's a lot of violence and gore too, so delicate people should have their vomit bands handle.
And yet...not much plot. It could have been way better without the first 2 twists and not killing off some people who could have made it all so much better. If you look at the trailer carefully, you can actually see who lives and dies first.
Me at the beginning of the movie:
Yay, Emma Roberts!
Oh, damn it. Seriously?!
Yay, Justin Hartley!
Whyyyyyy?!
Huh. Hilary Swank!
Wow, surprisingly kick ass.
Rest of the movie:
That must have hurt!
Where's the plot??
Watch it for some entertainment and maybe take a shot of Vodka every time someone died. No, when someone loses a body part. I'd give it a higher rating if they hadn't killed off my favorite actress right at the beginning.
Revenge (2017)
Awesome Movie!
I've watched this twice and I still think it's amazing. Skip ahead half an hour to get to the really good stuff. The beginning dragged a bit, but what comes after is an enjoyable ride.
Basically, a guy takes his lover on his hunting getaway, but one of his buddies wants her too and doesn't ask. She tries to escape and her lover tries to kill her. She's not the airhead she might seem and karma hits the 3 men hard.
It's a pleasure to have an intelligent woman in a revenge movie. She does everything right and is very brave and resourceful.
There was a LOT of blood and I was wondering how people didn't bleed out and die! I'm pretty sure that in real life that's what would have happened. Lol
This movie is definitely a great watch if you want to see a woman kick the ass of her rapist and her lover who betrayed her! You won't be disappointed.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Couldn't Even Watch All The Way Through!
I thought that the trailer looked funny and there were so many great actors packed into it, so when I actually watched it I wondered if I'd played the wrong movie. It's not funny in the slightest and I seriously started to watch it on 6 different occasions and got bored and turned it off. I still haven't watched it all and I'm over an hour in and nothing much is happening. Seriously, don't watch this. Even the acting of really great actors is somehow bad. The plot is uninspired and all over the place.
Crawl or Die (2014)
A Really Good Movie!
So, I saw the trailer and thought it was going to be an Aliens sort of movie with cliche soldiers and badly done monsters, but I decided to watch anyway. I was actually looking for the movie Crawl, with the alligator in the house and the hurricane, but stumbled into this one.
Then when the movie started it was so cliche about futuristic soldiers, with a little of Cube chucked in. It could have been any stupid B rated film in that genre, but I stuck with it and after a couple of people died it started to get really good. About 15-20 minutes in is when the good bits begin.
The creatures are pretty ruthless, but somehow really slow despite being a sort of centipede/alien hybrid moves better than a humans through the tunnels. You don't get a really good look at all of it, which makes thighs better. There's a lot of gore when the soldier's die, like splattering the insides all over the inside of the tunnel. It's really well done.
The tunnels they were crawling through got smaller and smaller and I started to feel like I was stuck in there with the characters. I was having an anxiety attack for some of it, so the movie did exactly as it promised. I honestly don't know how the actors for Tank and Package did that without freaking out. If you thought The Descent was claustrophobic with the cave scenes, you're going to find this movie way more freaky.
Nicole Alonso, who plays Tank, seriously has balls of steel to crawl through such confined spaces that she was practically flat on her face. I wouldn't have done that for 10 million dollars! I'm really wondering where exactly they filmed all of this, because some were tunnels of concrete and others dirt that couldn't have collapsed on the actors at any time.
Don't come in looking for a high budget film because it's distinctly B rated, but it was really well done. On only $8,000 they did hella good.
Definitely worth a watch if you're not too spoilt on high budget horror movies and don't mind a bit of a slow burn film. I dare you not to feel anxious as hell over watching Tank crawl through those tunnels.
Playing Beatie Bow (1986)
A Fantasy/Romance Movie Absolutely Worth A Watch!
It's been 33 years since I saw this movie as a teenager and I still love it. I remember many things about the plot even after all of this time. I would call it a romance/adventure/fantasy.
I viewed this movie in the same vein as Labyrinth (Rip our Goblin King), The Dark Crystal, Willow or The Princess Bride.
Abigail is young and innocent and falls in love easily, but she's also a chosen one sent back in time for a particular purpose. She's from the future so she has some advantages over Beatie's family and others from that time. The acting is quite decent and there aren't that many movies out there for time travel, let alone making an era film that really makes you feel as if it's the 1800's.
For an example about how accurate details of the plot are, Beatie exclaims over how manicured and clean Abigail's fingernails are and that only the high born ladies had such things. Beatie's nails were short and dirty in comparison.
The movie might not stand up to current movies, but it has its own charm. You'll be rooting for Abigail and her love interest by the end.
Some parts do have more mature themes, such as Abigail being taken to a brothel to please men, so maybe some younger kids might not be a good idea.
It's a really beautiful plot and a shame that it did very badly at the cinema. I only ever saw it on video. They really don't make movies like this anymore, which is a huge pity.
Yes, there is a happy ending!
Go watch it!
The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again (2016)
Dreadful Remake Attempt That Almosr Ruined The Original
Good lord did they mess this one up! Just a warning that there are spoilers ahead, but if you're reading this then doubtless you've already seen the original film which this one mirrors, so you'll know what's coming anyway. Please hold onto your precious memories of the original movie because you're going to need it once you slog through the dreadful drivel that's the remake.
I only just heard yesterday that one of my favorite movies had been remade and I was excited to see how a more updated version could hold up to the original from 1975. Well...it didn't. I know know why I hadn't heard of it and I fervently hope that it's thrown into a hole and buried.
I was born in 1977 and although not a massive fan, I go back and watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show every couple of years and have an even bigger appreciation now than I did when I was younger. Admittedly, I didn't believe that the new film could hold a candle to the old, but I chose to ignore all of the bad reviews and the 4.3 rating on IMDB. I wanted an unbiased opinion, so I didn't judge it and decided to watch it as I'd never seen the original.
I do get what the new movie was trying to do, but it simply didn't work. There are so many faithful fans of the original that this new one was bound to fail no matter what. We're attached to the characters and the original actors did such a fantastic job of it that seeing the changes was rather jarring. The songs were a massive part to the appeal of the film and when they were changed, the new one shot itself in the foot from the outset.
The one way that the new movie failed so spectacularly was the music. The song-writer's tried to make it more updated but the fans are so enamoured of the original that any changes at all were bound to make us walk out of the theatre in droves. The minute the first song began in the church yard in the new film, I was ready to close the browser and seek out the original film. Why would the songs be changed? Yes, they are a little dated now, but the movie was way ahead of its time in almost every aspect. The songs are still played on the radio, mentioned in other films, played at weddings and more. If the music had not changed then this new film would most certainly not have been hated that much.
It was an interesting spin to have the theatre audience as a major part of the film and it cut to them often during the songs. As the movie is still played every year in theaters and the fans dress as the characters and sing and interact, it could have worked very well in the new one. Even that part seemed to fail and be almost obnoxious.
The actors just didn't do a good job. Brad's every movement and speech was almost ridiculous, as was Magenta's. She looked terrible too. Janet was okay and I think that she did a decent job on the character. Riff Raff...well, the actor didn't exactly seem to know the character's part well at all. The way he stared at Janet like a pervert was pretty gross and his flailing movements during songs was terrible.
Riff Raff and Magenta are my two favorite characters from the original movie but they were so horrible in the remake that I could barely stand to watch them. They didn't look the same, and although Riff Raff was quite attractive, the moment he began to sing and flail about stupidly, I began to loath him. I hated Magenta on sight with her long stupid pink hair. The actor was very bad too and didn't seem to know the character. Magenta didn't act as she should and there was just no bond at all with her brother like in the original. Their interactions, even just their exchanging looks throughout the movie, was gone. Their forbidden relationship as lovers was a part of the plot that really worked, but it apparently was decided that it be removed from the new film. For anybody new to the movies, they'd never have known that Riff Raff and Magenta were related at all if it wasn't for Frank pointing out that relationship it would have been obvious. I also found it utterly ridiculous that the so-called siblings were clearly of different races and skin color.
The actress that played Columbia actually did manage to get the voice almost perfect, as the original had her, but she couldn't act. I hated whenever the camera panned to her to do her part. What was with the blue tongue?!
Don't get me started on Dr. Frank-N-Furter! She was dreadful. Let me start by saying that I have absolutely no issue with Trans people, or Drag Queens, and I'm a huge fan of Rupaul's Drag Race, so given that when I say that I hated Dr. Frank-N-Furter in this remake it's not due to being biased. The acting was simply bad, overdone, and even the singing sucked.
Poor Tim Curry. I'll bet that he regretted taking the role of The Criminologist once the filming began and definitely when it was released to theaters and was heavily panned. They also removed his accent which I really love and tried to do an English one. He didn't do it well.
The characters didn't seem to have a bond at all and I got no sense that the actors liked each other either, except for maybe Janet and Brad.
Next, the sets. In the original, Janet and Brad were singing on the steps of the church and inside of it, but in this remake they were singing and dancing in the graveyard, draping over gravestones. Just let that sink in a little. I couldn't believe how disrespectful the two were being to the dead and I wondered if anyone who saw the film and had loved one buried there were as horrified as I was.
In the next scene the two were walking through the rain after their car blew a tire and they were heading to the castle. Only, it wasn't really a castle in this new version, but an old decrepit theatre that looked half a castle and part some sort of construction area with chain link fences. I couldn't understand why the director would make such a bizarre change! Inside was strange too and the party room where the time warp was sung was small and cramped.
Oh, and there was a band and backup singers for almost every song! It was unnecessary and just weird.
Eddie didn't come out of a freezer, he crashed through a window on his motorbike. Columbia did scream when he was killed, but she shut up when Magenta stuck a lollipop into her mouth and then acted like she no longer cared.
The sex scenes in the bedrooms were just stupid, uncoordinated, and it was literally flailing and rolling about. In places it was like watching a seizure. Bizarrely, Rocky and Janet went to have sex in her bed, but somehow they went back later into the icebox (Yeah, Rocky was brought to life in an icebox!) so that the others could discover them. Why not just stay in the bed?
With a script like that nothing should have gone wrong at all, but between the changes to the sets, the songs, the characters and choreography, it was bound to bomb from the beginning.
The entire movie was just like watching a train wreck. I read that it followed the original script for the movie more faithfully but it couldn't be saved. I'd avoid watching this movie and go and watch the original again. Thank god I am such a big fan of the 1975 version or the new 2016 film would have made me loath the very sight of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. They ruined it completely and I'd really like the 93 minutes of my life back.
The Trick Movie: The Last Stage (2014)
Liked It A Lot, But It Could Have Been Better
I only just found out about this movie! I am a huge fan of the Trick series and I DID enjoy watching it, but...I didn't love it as I really wanted to.
I unfortunately could only give it a 5/10, because in the end it did disappoint me.
It follows the same formula as the series, with Ueda tricking Naoko into going to a remote location with him, in order to debunk a so-called Shaman. The usual threats to kill -- and the subsequent deaths -- were present, but they weren't exactly clever. It really seemed like the writers were rather lazy about this plot.
I also felt that not a lot of effort went into the 'tricks' in this, whereas the series always had some very clever tricks and satisfying reveals found out by Naoko. In fact, I was quite disappointed by how few tricks there actually WERE. After the reveals, which took very little time to figure out (I get that it's a short movie with time constraints, but a lot more effort could have gone into it!), I kept thinking: "Is that IT? Surely there's more to it?" Nope.
There wasn't as much of a comedic vein as there was in the series, and previous movies, but there were moments. It seemed to struggle through the humor and come off as awkward. If there had been more funny moments, I would have gladly given it a higher score.
Things were a lot more serious in the plot, but considering the events it had a nice build up, and it was all for a reason. Having it more serious did make it feel less like a Trick movie and the very reason (Other than the romance between Ueda and Naoko) that we love the series so much.
There were some very touching moments between Ueda and Naoko that was sweet, but they came off more as just friends. That usual playful nature between them, where he would taunt her and she'd act rather stupid, was mostly absent. It was only towards the end that their feelings were more apparent as romantic.
Switching tracks like that with their emotions sort of came out of nowhere. If you weren't familiar with the series and you'd watched this movie, you'd definitely have been wondering when the hell did they suddenly develop feelings for each other when it hadn't been there before.
The ending wasn't completely satisfying considering it's been blatantly obvious for several seasons and movies that Ueda and Naoko love each other, but it should make most fans happy. The romance between Ueda and Naoko was as subtle as always.
In fact, reading the comments written on the Discussion Board, the ending was a little TOO subtle for most, who completely misunderstood what had occurred. Since I don't want to add the spoiler here in the review, I've left the explanation of the ending scene on the Discussion Board for those who might not understand what happened.
All in all, as a long-time fan, the movie was worth watching, but as a conclusion to our favorite series it did not satisfy.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Very Exciting And Compelling movie!
I very rarely review anything, but I was so blown away that I rushed right to IMDb to do so.
This movie was f***ing amazing! I absolutely loved it, like I did John Carter. It was romantic, filled with spectacular fighting/battle scenes, astonishing special effects and a very compelling and original storyline. It had an absolutely satisfying ending also and I never considered that anything happening in the movie was ridiculous, or unnecessary to the plot.
Admittedly there were about three points in the film where it just seemed to jump ahead, as if it had missed a scene and suddenly something else was occurring. That was annoying, but perhaps it was just a not so good an editing job. It was minor compared to the rest of the plot and easily forgiven.
I honestly can't figure out why it supposedly 'bombed'. I'm absolutely certain that it will eventually get so many fans that it will become a cult classic. Go watch it without reading all of the negative hyper first; you won't be disappointed.
