Mozart in the Jungle (2014)
What a joy this show was to watch!
Exactly WHY this series never made the noise it deserves is a mystery. There were hardly any promotions, no late night tv host shows. Why?
For someone who has watched almost all the "best" tv series out there, & can be merciless in my criticism, this show came across as a pleasant surprise. I had such joy watching it! Fresh, stellar writing, beyond stellar performances - Gael García Bernal was phenomenal as the titular Mozart, eccentric but lovable maestro, with his stellar acting & won a golden globe for best actor.
Add to this an intoxicating stream of soulful classical music in every episode.
Yes, the story isn't fast paced neither does it leave you with a cliffhanger at the end of each episode, but aptly so, because this is the lives of the people who play for the New York Symphony. Ordinary people with extraordinary talent.
This show is much like the evening walk you took one beautiful spring, the one you never wanted to end, the one you'll never forget.
10/10
Uncut Gems (2019)
An unsettling feeling that climaxes superbly
Uncut gems is a rare movie of a bizarre story. Rare because it's been quite sometime since anyone's told a story as truthfully as this. Bizarre because, well, Adam Sandler's character is just that.
What is gambling addiction really like? The movie moves away from the accepted levels of unconscionable acts we are used to & gives you the real deal. You can expect a hardcore, unsubstituted look into the life of a formerly successful precious gems dealer who is a family man, also a gambler & an adulterer.
As the story unravels, what's odd is your brain struggling to come to terms with the crippling chaos breaking out because this man makes all the wrong moves.. Or does he?
Still, you accept it; that this must be the norm in the lives of a gambler with high profile clients. That's how convincing both director & writer Benny Safdie, Josh Safdie & surprisingly here breaking stereotypes Adam Sandler captured this raw unconventional story.
Recommended to anyone who loved the likes of.... Nope, can't think of another one like this, because Uncut Gems is a unique movie. 9.3/10
The Walking Dead (2010)
Who are the walking dead?
The dead can walk, gore galore, survival of the fittest - every nerd's dream plot, right? NOT!
TWD is beyond your regular zombie show (fact: the word zombie is never used in the series) & here's why it's worth your time.
The success & cult following behind this series comes down to two things - it's kickass character sketch & development since season one & the screenplay, at least for me. If you dismiss this show as another gore-filled "fighting the dead to live another day", think again. It's more than that - how the boundaries between what's right & wrong blur, the exacting reality of living with no comforts....The script is stellar, you won't find a single line out of context neither will you find emo one-liners about family like the ones we so generously get from Fast & Furious.
Rick Grimes aka badass father/cop who leads the series is the man to look out for. But, he wasn't always a badass. It's the dead & living that push his limits, everyday, in this world created for comics by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. Still not convinced? Our dame Danai Guria, the sword wielding warrior in the show once said Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) is the best leading man on TV, and rightly so. Like I said, it's the character sketches, it grows on you, you grow with them & suddenly you can't get enough.
TWD has been & is loved by fans for many reasons. For some, it's the perfect prosthetics, make-up & that gloomy post apocalyptic world. For folks like me it's the character's hard reality of choices so crassly thrust on our faces - leaves you wondering what you'd do if you ever find yourself in such a scenario. Isn't that the markings of a great show?
10/10.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Splendidly Stranger Than Anything Hollywood Has Ever Offered!
Listen, I gave this 10/10 just for the title - Stranger Than Fiction - the meaning behind the name will reveal itself to be so massively clever at the end of the movie.
Title love apart, it's cast & the script - oh dear god, thank you, for giving us this heady mix. Let's start with the cast. Will effing Ferrel - if you didnt know this already, he. is. one. of. the. most. underrated actors, which I realised only after watching this. He could've been just as suave as Brad Pitt in Ocean's 12 & you'll agree! Part of the reason this movie is such a big deal is his acting. He leads the movie superbly, period.
And then we have our Dame Emma Thompson, as if that's not enough, enter Dustin Hoffman & Maggie Gyllenhall.
Don't want to give away even a gist of the plot, because it's such a bizarre thing, to have zero expectations for a movie & then it turns out to be an absolute charmer.
So, with my good judgement & knowing that this same director created another classic for ages - Finding Neverland, are enough pointers for you to watch the movie.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
They don't make movies like these ANYMORE..
Do stories like these find Brad Pitt or does Brad Pitt find these stories? The answer is neither - stories like these are MADE for him. This review, however, is not about him or his acting.
Cinema lovers may love a film for its comedy, for it's perspectives, for its drama or lack thereof.. For many, like me, it's how I'm forced to find a melancholic beauty in sadness, a rare but quick respite from our own.
Legends of the Fall is poetry weaved into passionate storytelling - the look into the lives of one family, with one in particular, set at the backdrop of beautiful Montana.. A drama of epic proportions with those characters, the scenes, the screenplay.
All of us react to emotion differently, some harder than most, some, not much. You'll find this movie over dramatised if you fall in the latter. I watched this 12 years ago & it stayed with me long enough to leave a review now. if you're like me, and if you haven't watched this, you are in for a visual & passionate treat.
Friends from College (2017)
This ridiculous, clumsy, sometimes vapid yet incredibly hilarious show makes me laugh
...and that's all that matters. Really, I can't get enough of this show. There may have been several occasions where I may have rolled my eyes at the banal script, but it quickly makes up for it. Keegan-Michael Key & Fred Savage, I bow down to you, sirs - when slapstick comedy calls, they deliver & when dramatic emo scene calls, they deliver. BingeWORTHY.
Anne (2017)
Nothing short of a marvellous show
It's hard to come across a tv show that you want to re-watch.
Take away all the elements of surprise and intrigue, are you still left with something that will entertain? And that's where Anne with an E scores points. It's a wonderful entertainer. You will ponder at all of her wild imagination, laugh at her quirks and feel just pure joy end of the show.
Does it do justice to the books? Maybe not. What this show needs is appreciation for taking something original and adding your imagination to it. Isn't that what Anne is about? Let's all be open to imagination and appreciate just how good this show is.
Fast & Furious 7 (2015)
A tribute well made
For everyone riding on huge expectations for another mind blowing fast and furious sequel are in for a bit of a disappointment. While some off beat car chases and spectacular camera works around stunts will have you digging into your skin, no doubt, you will feel something missing.
James Wan and crew have clearly expressed the loss of their closest member over the course of the movie. Starting with the head on car collisions and the numerous one liners about family to the good five minute tribute that goes out to Paul in the end.
You will be reminded of the pain of never being able to see him on screen again. He was spectacular as ever and I have only the best of adjectives to describe how well suited he was for the role and no doubt, more sequels are on the way for the Dominic, Letty and crew but no one can ever reprise the role of Brian O Connor which is why it is justly shown that he retires from all the high octane action to taking care of his family with Mia.
There are, of course some of those jaw dropping scenes sprinkled generously in the trailers which will not leave you feeling completely disappointed. James Wan signature rolling the camera along the motion is worthy of mention, what better way to watch Statham and the Rock throwing those punches.
But really, your disappointment will quickly be replaced by an emotional melancholy feeling, and it is only fitting.
His words to Toretto "Did you really think I would leave without saying goodbye" will get to you more than you think it will.
Do not miss this one.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Euphoric
For those of us who have wondered if there will ever be an action thriller without the usual mixes seen over and over all these years, yes, this is the one, do not wait to read till the end of my review, go grab your tickets and watch it already, in case you still haven't.
Throughout the movie, pretty much only these happened with the audience. In repetition. Laughing, a lot, wolf-whistling , clutching head. A little bit of shock and lots of awe. Must mention - Taron Egerton's jaw will make you swoon.
I guess it was so good thanks to that charming crisp script, detailed character sketches, incredible cast and, AND that BGM score and stunt sequence.
I should add, a bit of the violence may not be well received, but it is exactly that which makes it better for some of us. This has easily got to be Matthew Vaughn's best yet, in fact, the freshest new age action thriller in a long long time.
Euphoric was how i felt, in comparison, other mass entertainers will fade in leaving that lasting feeling long after the movie gets over, but not this one, no.
As quoted several times throughout the 2 hour run time, "this ain't that kind of movie"
