And Just Like That... (2021)
I'm looking forward to seeing more
Written after seeing 9/10 episodes of the first season.
I was a big fan of Sex and the city and really looked forward to seeing this reboot. Yes, it has it's issues. Personally I don't like the way Miranda is written now, the character seems very different from the tough, fair and intelligent woman from Sex and the city. I'm more than willing to give this series a chance though. I hope there will be more seasons.
The people complaining about the show being too woke now seem to forget all of the discussions about the issues with representation in the original show and cast. Maybe the showrunners have underestimated their audience a little, but I see great promise in the new characters. I look forward to hopefully getting to know Che, Seema and the other characters better.
I can see many interesting story arcs building. Maybe Che and Rock will get to know each other? Maybe Seema will find a good match in the bar owner? I'm hoping Steve gets a chance to shine again. I'll be watching, that's for sure.
Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
Great concept
I really like this concept, and the host seems like a genuinely nice, funny and enthusiastic guy. His observations are often funny and very relatable.
I just wish he knew a little more about the places he is visiting and the food he's eating. I could also do with less of the "big reactions" after tasting different things. The smiles, wide eyed stares and such sometime seem a bit forced.
With small tweaks this would be a great show. My favourite episodes are the ones where he talks to chefs. My least favourites are the ones featuring influencers or other prople who don't work with food.
Hannah Gadsby: Douglas (2020)
Funny, relatable and clever
I absolutely adore Hannah Gadsby. She's one of the best, if not THE best comedian I have seen. I first discovered her through seeing Nanette on Netflix, and I found the mixture of comedy, lecture and vunerability to be thorougly engaging. I couldn't see how anyone could deliver again on such a high level, but she did!
I think Nanette was so funny in part because I didn't know what to expect. But even knowing her style, this was just as good, if not better. I just want everyone to see it, and agree that it's absolutely genius.
The part about anger was so relatable, and I'm going to start using the expression "puffer fish moment". I love it! I've had many of those without knowing what to call them.
I can't wait to see the next show.
Making the Cut (2020)
Promising
I'm a huge fan of this concept with designers competing to be the best one. I also thought Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum were great hosts on Project runway.
I'm writing this review after only seeing 2 episodes, and so far I'm sure that I'll continue watching.
That being said. I don't like this show as much as others I've seen, but it's entertaining enough, and I'm hoping it'll get even better.
Thing I do like about it:
-The hosts
-The new judges, especially Naomi Campbell. I respect her opinion even on the rare occasions where I don't agree, and she's very direct. I hope she's a regular judge.
-The designers. They seem very talented.
-The concept of every designer having to make the cut every episode.
Things that could be improved:
-Too much emphasis on the travelling and surroundings. It's great to see the designers being inspired, but for generic views of Paris, I could watch any travel show.
-The fact that the designers have seamstresses. I enjoy seeing the process, and if you must have seamstresses, they should also be included. (Though I would prefer the designers to have to sew themselves). And if they continue working with seamstresses, they shouldn't communicate through notes and patterns.
-There is diversity in the models, but it's not talked about. I appreciate Tim Gunns speaking up for more diversity, and wish that it was talked about even more.
Cats (2019)
3 stars to the brave actors who really tried
...but the end result is unfortunately quite grim. I can see what they were trying to do, but they did not succeed. The constantly twitching cat ears are extremely distracting, some of the songs are not done well, and the few good scenes couldn't make up for the rest. This movie seems to have been made by a crew that never talked together and just did what they wanted separately.
Jeune Juliette (2019)
Growing up in a larger body
I really, really loved this movie. As a woman who has been a person of size (POS) since I was a child I could relate to Juliette's struggles. In the beginning of the movie there is a scene where Juliette breaks the fourth wall and stares into the camera. I felt that look. I have given that look. That look told me that this was going to be a great movie. I remember what gym was like, and I had a gym teacher who was just like that.
The movie is not all about Juliette's weight of course. At it's heart it's a well told coming of age story, a film like Eighth grade, where you get to see what life is like for a young teenager. I liked it more because I for once could relate to the main character so much, but it's an entertaining and well acted movie regardless of my personal connection to it.
The only complaint I have is that Juliette supposedly realizes that she is larger when she is about 14 years old. That is simply not beliavble, and it annoyed me a lot. We know that POS are singled out and told that we are larger from a very young age. Still, I'm willing to forgive that one flaw.
I have already reckommended this movie to quite a few people, and I will buy it when it becomes available on DVD. I look forward to seeing more projects from this director, and several of the actors.
