Bad Ronald (1974)
I liked it! (but then, I like Dolph Lundgren flicks)
I first saw this movie when I was 13, long before I knew what was a "good" movie or "bad." Granted, it's NOT a cinematic masterpiece, but being a picked-on geek myself, I identified with Ronald and the imaginary world he creates, and tries to drag a teenage girl into. As for the budget, NONE of the movies made at about this time looked good, and girls were supposed to be pretty, not talented. If you'd like to see Scott Jacoby in a much better movie, track down "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane," with a barely-post-"Taxi Driver" Jodie Foster and a still-playing-psychos (a la "Badlands") Martin Sheen.
I just bought a CD from a band that I'd never heard of, just because their name was Bad Ronald ... if you like white rock-type hip-hop, check it out!
The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius (2002)
Funny as heck!
I still haven't seen the original movie, but I love the series! I'm 41 and my son is 14, and we like to watch it together. I'm not the biggest fan of CGI animation, but considering all the gadgets that Jimmy comes up with, it works; the animators do a great job, too. I like the fact that Jimmy Neutron, while having an IQ of 210, is pretty much just a normal dorky kid, with normal dorky friends - the difference is in the high-tech way he solves his normal dorky problems. This is geared more towards kids than is "Dexter's Lab," but I still find much to giggle at (like the fact that Jimmy's Mexican buddy is named "Sheen." In case you're not a huge Martin Sheen fan, his real name is Ramon Estevez.) It's cute AND funny -- I recommend it!
Ambition (1991)
I love this movie!
(SPOILERS GALORE) To the other commenters: How jaded do you have to BE to not be moved by the end of this movie, where Clancey Brown pours the bullets into Lou Diamond Phillips hands?!? I also found it convincing ... perhaps because I've known more than my share of damaged people, I believed that that sequence of events would lead an jerk like Phillip's char to have his terminally ill father killed, just to sell his book. I think it *is* possible that Brown's char could be driven to a murderous rage at one time (by the ubiquitous over-bearing mother), but not be a killer, really, once her influence is removed. I love the fact that the plot is so convoluted that you have NO idea where it's going; I've see probably a billion movies, and can predict the outcome in most of them in the first 15 minutes. I appreciate a writer who can be original, and keep me on my toes. Rent it - judge for your self!
