Jesus Revolution (2023)
Keeping it Real with Jesus
"Jesus Revolution" is a very powerful movie, one of the best ever made. The story centers on the revival that swept America in late 60s to early 70s, starting with hippies. The movie tells a moving true story. The screenplay keeps it real and the actors do a superb job. Of course Kelsey Grammer is a master at his trade and does a superb job playing Pastor Chuck Smith, who struggles but decides "different" is good. If you haven't watched the hit TV series, "The Chosen," you'll see why Jonathan Roumie gets so much acclaim. The movie covers it all: brokenness, hopelessness, redemption, victory, joy. Lots of nostalgic 60s music play in the background. In addition to the "peace" sign, you'll see lots of "one-way" signs. That was big in the Christian circle back then. For Christians, this is a reminder of how God's Spirit moves and changes lives. For non-Christians, you'll get a glimpse into what makes your real Christian friends tick. It's the real thing. Everyone is welcome, including hippies.
Running the Bases (2022)
Baseball, Win at All Cost, Family, Gospel
Was all set to see another standard Hollywood violent action movie but switched to 'Running the Bases' in hopes of seeing something different, something with more heart in it. Great decision! Well acted, drama, humor, true to life story, realistic high school baseball, excellent cinematography, and, yes, realistic portrayal of people dealing with very hard life challenges, making them question God. Highly recommend this movie, especially if you played in high school sports (I played Little League), but it's a really great movie whether you played sports or not. The story highlights interactions between coaches and players, players and players, and parents and children. Your heart will be moved.
Out of Time (2021)
Better than Back to the Future
Really well done modern B movie. Kind of like the Back to the Future series, but way less campy, far less campy than the last 2 in the series. If you don't mind low budget SFX, this is highly watchable. As others have said, it's far, far better than the average streaming movie.
Man of Steel (2013)
Reenergized the Franchise! Best Supie Movie to Date!
Excellent movie. Totally reenergized the franchise, which was almost sunk after the horrible "Superman Returns" (2006), which you should avoid seeing at all costs. That movie was made by people who despise Superman and hoped to destroy him and everything noble and honorable that he stood for. "Man of Steel" (2013) was the best Superman movie to date, great on multiple levels--plot, acting, SFX, filmography, musical score, message, etc. That's saying a lot, because I did believe that "a man can fly" when I saw the first Reeves movie 4 times in the theater way back in '78.
Uncle Drew (2018)
Hilarious for Old, Former Pick-up B-ball Players
Hilarious! Can't forget the heater-on-in-the-car-in-the-summer scene. And how many old guys would still like to be able to take it to the net! Live it up vicariously. Lots of nostalgia thrown in if you remember the '70s.
Harriet (2019)
A Real American Hero!
Wow! Great movie, we'll acted, historically accurate. This movie puts you into Harriet's life. You are back in the 1850s, in Maryland, where Harriet was a slave, a person of great faith, who escapes to Philadelphia. You see good and bad among whites and African-Americans. You see how determined people who risk everything can make a difference for good. This a must-see for people who want to understand history and a real American hero, Harriet Tubman.
Midway (2019)
Greatest Sea Battle War Movie Ever - And It Really Happened
Wow! The greatest sea battle movie ever made. Can't understand how anyone could complain about anything. Being extremely familiar with the history of events, I didn't expect Hollywood to come close to accuracy, but I was pleasantly surprised. Acting and SFX were as good as it gets. Before seeing the movie, I had read a few complaints about the CG. Now I'm wondering why? The special effects were truly excellent, never seen better. No film before has ever provided a movie-goer with such a realistic naval aviator perpective of attacking an enemy ship. The movie highlights the complexity of war, the risks, importance of military intelligence, and the heroic actions of the American military. No movie is perfect, but this is as close as it gets. I see plenty of pointless, fictional, meaningless movies--some are enjoyable to watch (especially sci-fi), but they are no comparison to the real-life story of Midway, which will go down as one of the greatest war movies ever made. See it now on the big screen! And celebrate the warriors who turned the tide of war in the Pacific in 1943!
Yesterday (2019)
Over the Top Fantastic, Romance, Sci-Fi, Music, a Stirring Epic!
This is one of the greatest movies ever made. It is a rich story that incorporates sci-fi, romance, music, multiculturalism, friendship, and redemption. The directors, the actors (big parts and small) and everyone involved in making this movie can go to their graves thinking I did something really awesome in my life, I helped make "Yesterday." You gotta love this movie!
Joker (2019)
Hitler or the Joker
People are generally fascinated with what makes heroes and villains do what they do, whether it's real-life villains like Hitler or fictional characters like the Joker or Darth Vader. The first six episodes of Star Wars were all about the story of Darth Vader, how a little boy became the galaxy's ultimate villain, who terrorized and killed without mercy. So, thanks to "Joker," we now understand how he became the evil character that he is. A key question, though is, when you step back from a movie, book, or any artistic creation, has it made the world better or worse? Really, that's a good question for any human endeavor. I think the first six episodes of Star Wars left the world better. Yes, we understood Vader; we understood how his circumstances and choices made him evil. Yet, when he became evil, he stayed evil; his violent acts were reviled. And, of course, "SPOILER ALERT", we were gratified by his redemption. 'Joker' doesn't do the same with the Joker. That's a problem, a big problem.
Ad Astra (2019)
Good Cinematography But That's About All
Some good cinematography here and there, but a real downer of a story. Psychology and family relationships are fine in movies, but it helps if they're interwoven into a grand adventure or at least a story that's fun. SPOILER ALERT: One good take-away from the movie is its reinforcement of the number one space-faring rule: #1 - Don't allow baboons onto your spaceship.
Downton Abbey (2019)
Disappointing, not the Magic of the TV Series
Giant fan of TV series, was sadly disappointed with movie.
Overcomer (2019)
Inspiring
A great movie, inspiring on multiple levels. For anyone interested in what Christian faith is really like, this is an eye-opener. The people in the movie reveal their hurts and flaws, and how they "overcome" them, with God's help. At the same time, no one should be put off by the "religious" component of the movie. The characters are real-life, revealing their struggles, husband-wife, father-son, coach-winning/losing, hurt-forgiveness, suffering, facing death. My typical movie preferences are action, sci-fi, super-hero, and military. With that said, this relational movie was as great as the best if those, surprisingly so. Not escapism but real-life inspiring.
Richie Rich (2015)
Travesty of original, writers must hate Richie
Nothing like the comics. Truly terrible. It should not been titled Richie Rich. The series would still be terrible, but at least actual Richie Rich fans wouldn't have been horribly disappointed.
The Last Dragon (1985)
Sho-nuff, sho-nuff, sho-nuff funny!
This movie is a real contender for the most enjoyable martial arts movie ever made. It is sho-nuff, sho-nuff, sho-nuff funny!
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
The New Astroboy
Wow, awesome effects. It's Astroboy for 2019. As innovative as the original was for the '60s. Awesome robot action with heart.
IO (2019)
Instead of "Io", add "w" to get "Iwo" Jima
Highly recommend a different "Io" movie. Add "w" to get "Iwo" and watch a really good movie instead: "Letters from Iwo Jima." Not sci-fi, but a moving story of one of the great battles of WW2, from the Japanese perspective.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Wow!
Wow! This is one of the greatest war movies ever made.
Replicas (2018)
Keaunu Reeves has never made a bad movie
Great movie, as always, from Ted/Neo/John. There's never been a bad Keanu Reeves movie. Fans will enjoy it. I sometimes wonder if competing movie companies hire people to write bad reviews. I understand not everyone likes any movie, but a 1-star for Replicas?!? I have seen some 1-star movies but I can't believe that anyone considers this to be one of the worst movies ever made. C'mon, 1-star! You can't be serious. I think if you watch a couple of true 1-star movies, you'll realize what a 1-star really is. There are numerous, try these for starters--Gigli, Wild Wild West, Pearl Harbor, Jack and Jill, Catwoman, The Beast of Yucca Flats, and The Horror of Party Beach. After watching the above, I'm fairly sure Replicas will earn at least a 2-star rating, maybe even a 9 or 10, but definitely not 1.
