Queer as Folk (2000)
I miss the Show. Pales in Comparison to the Original
I remember a few years back reading in a copy of Attitude magazine about a gay TV show coming out in the UK called Queer as Folk. I remember having a British friend tape the whole thing for me and then mail me the tapes. I was an instant fan. It was so raw, so edgy, so well written and so witty. I was hooked.
The US version lost a lot in translation. Taking a 10 episode drama series with a beginning middle and end, and turning it into a soap opera spanning 5 years...it lost a lot of its wit. A lot of it's punch. A lot of of it's sophistication.
But I liked the US show. I'm sad to see it gone. I liked it because as the show went on...the writers tried hard to have all the characters experience every possible facet of modern gay life..at times this gave the show a very cheesy 80's..moral of the week type structure to the show. And at times it could be preachy. And at other times over the top and pornographic in it's depictions of it's sex scenes. But I could relate to the show. And several of the characters on a very basic level. And it was just fun to get all the queers and fag hags and just watch it and bitch and gossip about the character and the show.
Unfortunately because of the source material...which was meant to be a depiction of gay lives without politics and as openly and honestly as possible, and the way in which American shows always have to moralize or feel the need to be political, to have a stance, the show started off as one thing,(a straight translation of the show for American audiences) and ended as a completely different show (a very politically self conscious and self aware piece of optimistic preachy soft core porn) But it should have won an Emmy. Much much lesser shows have won Emmy's.
I think historically, this show will be looked at fondly. I think for young gay people, it gave us a glimpse (in the final seasons) of how gay life CAN be, and that it doesn't have to be all drugs and clubs...we can have relationships and families and we can finally "grow up" someday. I think thats a very positive and worthwhile message to send to gay youth.
Video X: Evidence (2003)
I hope this isn't real......
I bought this movie. It was only 2.99 at this little shop that sold bootlegs and small little indie films. I've never regretted spending three dollars on something until now. It was almost as bad as Pray For Dawn. Haven't heard of it either? Consider yourself lucky.
Completely unoriginal concept. We're supposed to believe that this tape is real a la the Blair Witch Project? At least those kids could act a little. I am so sick of Blair Witch rip offs. Please, move on. that was 1996. Or something. yeah it was a long time ago. It's not cool or original anymore. Try writing something for a change. You know something with lines for the actors to memorize because they do a horrible job of making them up themselves.
Unbelievable. In every sense of the word. A flaming piece of crap.
