Leviathan (1989)
Though it's aged some, it's still pretty good
I love these types of films...a group of people, stuck on a ship (either in beneath the ocean or out in space) and some weird blood-thirsty creature starts to kills them all off. Think Underwater, Life, and of course, Alien. This is aquatic horror, and one I hadn't seen probably since it came out in the 80s. If I had remembered watching it and didn't rewatch, I'm sure I would have rated it higher. It wears its age a bit, and that's what kept it from being a 7-8 star film for me. However, it still holds up as a pretty entertaining movie. The big payoff is the ending, mainly the last 5 minutes. You'll be saying "WTF" while laughing hilariously. But it's the last 5 seconds that's the pinnacle of comedy gold. I mean wow. Watch it just for that.
The Fall of the Louse of Usher: A Gothic Tale for the 21st Century (2002)
Its not a total waste of time
I'm not sure if it was because it was a slow Sunday afternoon or the fact that I'm having a thing for blokes with bad teeth (is that redundant?) but I didn't dislike this movie as much as I probably should have. I love Ken Russell...everything I have seen of his from The Boyfriend to The Devils.(We share birthdays!)I think that if a director is one of those filmmaker's who has a strong flavor, a distinct original style that one enjoys, it is hard to deny even his lesser moments. This movie is probably only for die hard Ken Russell fans like myself. I don't know anyone I would recommend this film to...but that is more of an insult to those I know than the movie itself.
Possession (1981)
This is one of my favorites...
I don't want to be redundant; enough has been said about this movie. You really either do love or hate it. Out of the few people I have persuaded to watch it, none have enjoyed it like I did. Adjani said something like this movie is "psychological rape"...it really has this hard to escape unnerving feeling from the very start. I spend a lot of my time trying to find films that will move me to feeling something...I often resort to blood bath cinema with no substance. Possession is one of those exceptional films that get to you both on a visual and mental level. I am not going to go on a critiqued's rant, but I advise anyone who is looking for a challenging, non-pretentious art house film, to definitely check this out.
