Paper Towns (2015)
One time watch flick
Being from the same source as Fault in our Stars, I know many who kept comparing the movies but here is the thing.. they are different! So why have any specific expectations. That exclamation out of the way, Paper Towns is a simple script that succeeds as a movie due to decent music, good acting by the lead actors and the protagonist Que's friends too. It's left as one of those one off watch movies as no power punch dialogs or characters or plot either. If any one has read the novel, let me know if the pace was crisp in words as the 1.40 hr length of the movie seemed a tad too much for a simple plot.
P.S. I am totally gone for Nate Wolff's exclamations ... those "aah?" and "hmm?". Not sure how many noticed it though.
Dracula Untold (2014)
Excellent ! A Sequel Please !
6.3 IMDb rating ? Seriously! For those who missed the movie in theaters, please watch on Blue-ray as the movie has been shot with a smooth cinematic effect and the effects are very restrained, not over powering the script and story line. That coupled with Luke Evans' acting where despite the various nuances of the character that he displays, he never goes overboard.
The movie is fast paced, engaging and has dosages of action and drama and they tactfully leave it open for a sequel, wetting viewers' curiosity. It strays from the history of Dracula tales, but they are tales after all... meant to be told and retold with twists and turns, building on the old. An 8.5/10 for this entertainer :)
Rudderless (2014)
Almost on the brink of being great....
I just watched the movie and brimming with emotions, gave the movie an 8. Maybe as I re watch it, I might bring the rating to 7; as I said, this is a movie that could have been great but falls short of it. The title not only signifies the band but the position in which the lead character finds himself in. And if a movie is about reviving one's life with music and revolves around music, the makers need to deliver on that front. And they did !
Rudderless has some soulful lyrics with music that doesn't overpower the vocals thus making it a good entertainer. Coupled with Billy Crudup's acting and a strong character based story, the movie delivers. Selena Gomez looked completely out of place thus proving how one can weaken a movie a tad even if they have a 2min role. Somewhere I believe they could have worked on Crudup's character a little more and bind the entire story more tightly..
X+Y (2014)
Mundane
The movie came across as a 6.5 to me and a part of it might be the high expectations I had of it after seeing a 97% fresh rating and a lot of positive criticism. Expectations aside, having viewed movies on music prodigy, math prodigies and ones based on biographies, this came across as a rather mundane effort with little screen time spent on the beauty of Maths.
The characterization had be tad befuddled too. The specific aspects being the kid suffering from Asperger's which seems to be specifically directed at the mom. My medical knowledge of the condition is limited, however, it's understandable if they showed how the mom couldn't handle his condition but here that was not the case. He merged well enough with the team and took off rather well with the girl. Then why was he being a complete ass to his mother?
That being said, the acting and the pace of direction was good enough but left me wanting something better out of it.
While We're Young (2014)
A boring movie .... keep for those Xtra Lazy Weekends!
Well, the fact that I regard the movie to be stacked for a barren weekend means I found it watchable indeed. Good actors in the lead and good direction. But that apart it was irritating script n story. Not even one dialogue that stays with you. Does turning 30+ or spilling into 40 make people desperate ... common ... people earn those yrs and such scripts are over used and over dramatic unless there is a real good plot at heart. The character Jamie played by Adam Driver was ill conceived as it was so full of over gestures and goodness that it stinks from the beginning. Maybe a tad bit character development there would have made it all digestible. The movie is maligned by typical scenes of reel world - people with kids going la la crazy - youth finding solace in drug induced trance and silly religious acts - drug induced kissing! So if u have run out of options for ur weekend, maybe give this movie a watch.......
Supernatural: LARP and the Real Girl (2013)
A Welcome Turn From Torn & Frayed
Well I have gone through general reviews and opinions online and they really don't seem to tip towards this being one of the good episodes. With all the costume drama pics that were online prior to its release, it was certainly much looked forth too, so maybe viewers must have set their expectation high; all apart, this is a fun episode that doesn't loose the story of the season.
Felicia Day is back with her dorkiness and she may not be an eye candy, but that's not what she is here to achieve! Dean thankfully is not in the " I am the cause for all woes in the world and Sam's life". He is aware of the implications of the 'Citizen Fang' fake message and what Sam has left behind to be with him - but that is it.. no brooding and alcoholic self loathing. His child like enthusiasm on Larping is 'A'dorable.
Sam persists with his 'lament' phase but that is who Sam always was. He plays the sweet sane younger brother by giving into Dean's 'lets have some fun' need. The grand finale to the show with the Brave Heart speech and Jensen's comic timing was applaud worthy :) Why wouldn't SPN fans love this episode....
Supernatural: Southern Comfort (2012)
Love the Sam Dean tension spilling over the episode
This episode is already in the list of my favs in Supernatural history. I mean common, it was so smoking hot to see the brothers fight each other out verbally & physically in a suite ! - I mean, the visual effect was entertaining :) Coming to Garth - the comedy factor is added. & there was a gud Soundgarden score - the SPN choice of music being almost absent thru S7.
Minus point - the end reminded me a bit 2much of a similar conversation in S5 E5 (Fallen Idol). However, the look of desperation that flashes on Dean's face as he wants to hang on to his brother & make it like the good old days is so moving; esp the fact that despite nodding his head to accept Sam as he is now, it is clear that Dean wants to just shrug off every thing and sweep it under the mat.
