Venkovský ucitel (2008)
good acting but poor plot
In the film one can find some very good acting, especially by the main actors.
All the rest is a bit sad. The plot makes little sense. Obviously written and filmed by people who have no idea what life in the country is like. (And loved by cinema goers who have no idea what country life is like.) At too many points you just wonder, "why is this happening?" but never get an answer. The psychology of the characters is rather weak. On the whole you are left with the feeling that things are somehow random... The music does not fit. Etc. Certainly not a film I'd like to see again, and not the best current Czech cinematography can offer.
Un homme et une femme (1966)
just an ordinary (boring?) love story
The film tells a love story in an interesting way, with several good ideas (retrospectives, ...) but also several very bad ideas (the camera turning round and round the couple in love, the dog running hence and forth). I am not sure watching just for the few good ideas makes it worthwhile. Maybe so, the director transforms the poor script into a much better film than Hollywood would.
However, most importantly, the plot is silly. There is nothing unexpected, nothing out of the ordinary, plainly silly. It happens every day that two people fall in love with each other, travel together, go a long way to see each other, can't really go on with each other... What is the point of such a story?
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
perhaps not historically accurate, but certainly entertaining
Two kinds of objections have appeared to this film: 1. Many inaccuracies with respect to historical facts. 2. The film is not exactly the same as the book.
I consider them both irrelevant. 1. The filmmakers aimed not to make a documentary, but a drama. 2. No film can ever be the same as a book.
The filmmakers did a good job bringing the novel to the screen. Scarlet Johansson's acting, and more so Natalie Portman's, is brilliant. Their English accent may still not be appropriate, but they do try :) Wonderful costumes! The only blemish is the film's length. In the first half you may be a little bored, but it gets somewhat better towards the end...
