Uncle Frank (2020)
A brilliant movie marred by an unnecessary reference to Sri Lanka
A brilliant movie marred by an unnecessary reference to Sri Lanka
That's it. That's my review.
Since I have to type out a few more characters to qualify for the minimum review length, I'll leave this here as well.
3 Idiots (2009)
3 hours of stereotypes, melodrama and rehashed jokes from the nineties
I got to see this movie at a special screening before it hit the theaters. The high expectation was palpable. After all, Aamir Khan has been producing successive hits over the years. Now for the movie - which starts in an engineering college in India, goes on to show the lives of three of its students through the years till they graduate. This being a Bollywood film, obviously has a smattering of romance and song and dance sequences. Right from the start where Aamir jaywalks into the college building without a care in the world to the time he starts questioning the teaching methods in class, its just a matter of a couple of days. Some cheeky guy this is! Unfortunately, all his antics and funny lines are as old as the college building he is in. You would have heard these jokes a hundred times over. Anyways, that is the best part of the film since it at least elicits a few laughs. The rest of the 3 hours is filled with stereotypes and melodramatic scenes which are ridiculous at best. It seems that these days in India, anyone who can make the audience cry can laugh all the way to the bank. Aamir has this knowledge and isn't afraid to use it.
Mungaru Male (2006)
Mediocre film but a refreshing change
The movie as such isn't great as many people on this forum make it out to be. Its got a mediocre storyline, mediocre acting and there isn't much to write home about the music either. Despite this, what makes this movie stand out is that its drawing people back into the theaters to watch Kannada movies. This could be either due to the scenic locales in which the movie has been shot or the music that isn't half as bad as the ones that have monopolized the Kannada movies for decades now.
If you are a Kannadiga, go watch this movie which could probably herald a new wave of Kannada cinema. If you aren't, go watch this movie to see some of the unspoilt beauty of Karnataka.
Overall, Id rate this movie worth a watch.
9 Songs (2004)
Poetic and beautiful
Yes, the movie is nothing but scenes of sex interspersed with scenes of a band playing music; almost like an MTV music video but the director has taken much effort to mitigate the pornographic element that goes with any sexually explicit movie.
Despite close up shots of genitalia and scenes of drug use, the story has an air of innocence to it. The relationship is uncomplicated and so are the characters.
This movie is just a up close look at a simple relationship but with a touch of deja vu and poetic enough to make the viewer sympathize with the characters.
