Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Rivals the first
I have watched the Ghostbusters since the original one, I was a baby when the first came out, but my older brother and I were hooked. We watched the cartoons, saw the second in theaters and had the original toy line. I have shown my son the original movies and the cartoon series as well, he always loved Extreme Ghostbusters. This is an all time favorite for myself and my son. My son had severe ADHD (as do I) and spectrum autism disorder, it's not easy to keep his attention. From the first shot of the movie all the way to the end, my son was enthralled. As was I. There were a few elements I could predict from the first two movies (which it incorporated beautifully), but it was amazing from beginning to end. All of the actors were incredible, the effects were amazing and the story, though older, was given a fresh new spin. Bravo and well done..Harold Ramis would be proud.
Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)
When your 5 year old says...
My Son is a huge fan of the first two Home Alone movies. He saw the first when he was 3 and turned to me saying "I Love this movie, mama!" We saw a new one coming out, we never really watched the other ones, so we wanted to make it movie night with it. We got about 20 minutes into it when he said "mama, this home alone is no good, let's watch something else". When your 5 year old says that? You know it sucks. They need to let this franchise go. Only the first two were any good. Sorry, Devin Ratray, but this one is going to get fed to my tarantula...
Blippi (2014)
My Two year old adores him
I can't fathom anyone giving Blippi a bad review, I really can't. My two year old absolutely loves him and has learned so much from him! He's very approachable and fun for children. I have also suggested him to people on my flights while inflight and he has calmed those children right down and given their parents some time to relax. His videos are well done, he teaches in such creative and insightful ways all while keeping children entertained and happy. All my son wants to watch is Blippi ("Blippi On" is common from my son) and I can bet he's all your young children will want to watch as well. I would Highly recommend Blippi!
Girl Meets World (2014)
5 stars only for the original cast...
Where to start...I did grow up with the original show, so I was excited for this show to continue the story but with a fresh, new angle and outlook. What we got was stale Disney stereotypical plots, acting and attempt to cash in on the premise of it being a continuity of Boy Meets World. Disney always seems to be over the top with its preachiness and unrealistic takes on life. While I don't think the actors are bad, I do think their acting was stilted due to the "Disneyfication" (it's a new word, just go with it) of the series. The only time I found it funny was when the original cast of Boy Meets World was on, especially Eric. Will Friedle still owns it. As pointed out before, the depth of the original show is missing because of the typical Disney standards (sugary sweet and with rose colored glasses). Even Cory and Topanga have lost their charm and don't have the same appeal they once had. Cory tries too hard to be Mr Feeny, but only comes across as preachy. Topanga has virtually disappeared and Riley and Maya don't have the chemistry of Cory and Shawn. The only time I saw any chemistry was when the original cast came back. This show tries too hard and is very unrealistic. Too much Disney and not enough heart and depth that made the original so great. I think the cast is good, but they lack any chemistry. To quote the obnoxious attempted catch phrase of Riley and Maya "Stop it"...seriously, what is that?
A Song from the Heart (1999)
It's AMY!!!
Though I usually am not too much of a fan for these type of movies, I did enjoy this one. Amy Grant has been my favorite singer for quite a while and I always like to see what she's up to. I didn't get to see this movie until 2004 but I did like it. Though Amy is known for singing, I know she can pull of anything thats put in front of her and she sure did with this movie. The actors chemistry was quite evident in this movie and the fed well off of each other. Though the story was a little predictable and done many times before, there was just a little something extra from Amy, D.W., and Keith that made it more than just the run-of-the-mill stereotypical drama. This is definitely one of the better movies!
Suddenly Susan (1996)
Suddenly Bored...
I remember first tuning into this show in 1996, when it first started now being only 12 going on 13 I remember being bored and flipping to a much more worthy show, Boy meets world. I decided this year at 21 to watch it again and see if it was just my youth speaking back then....but it wasn't. The only parts of the show worth watching were Luis, Nana, and my favorite actor of all time, Judd Nelson. They all had these odd characters that at most times were poorly written but they worked with it and the rest of the cast which was kinda blahhh (But David Strickland was pretty good too...R.I.P.) and carried it. I will admit I never saw Eric Idle but I like him too, but in my opinion, cannot hold a candle to Judd Nelson in things like this.
Brooke Shields isn't that great in that role, thats my opinion but shes not all that funny and most of her "humor" is really predictable and not well played. Kathy Griffin annoys the living daylights out of me BIG TIME to the point I cannot watch her. But I haven't seen enough to know everyone else yet but the writers were asleep most of the time from what I've seen and whose brilliant idea was it for them to break into that "Rollin on the river" song in the earthquake episode? If thats Brooke Shields' real voice, she can sing that I will say even if she was lippin (not very well). Other than that, the only reason I watch it is because Judd Nelson is such an awesomely talented guy---other than that...I'd flip to Family Guy or something...
The Breakfast Club (1985)
The good times...
I was not quite thrilled with this movie when I saw it back in 1997---but being in 9th grade, I didn't quite get it so much as I do now.
A crew of High Schoolers is put in detention on a Saturday for various "mis-doings" during the course of their day at school, therefore, they are punished with Saturday detention (which actually was never done in my school, but I also wasn't in High School in the eighties). There you have the Jock, The "hood", The "Princess", the "nut", and the "Brain" trapped with their "fire breathing dragon" of a principal.
The thing that I really loved was how they all start off showing the closed mindedness of each student towards the other and all the assumptions they made and then lead into the whole "We stick together" thing. They all make inaccurate assumptions about each other and then really understand that the lines placed on students and cliques is all man made and they cross those lines and blur them. In the end, two of the guys and both girls get involved with each other (and the total opposite of each other ends up together) and the "brain" stays smart and stays single! More of a "coming of age" thing but a "go against the standards and rulings of peers" thing! The best performance was by Judd Nelson, playing John Bender. Anyone else would not have fit the part as well as he did, I don't care who it is. I believe that the part was made for him and only he could pull it off so well and Molly Ringwald's performance in their "tension" scenes and argument scenes was amazing---they played off of each other's energy and emotion and took it further. Also noteworthy is Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, and Emilio Estevez---all 5 played well off of each other and fed off of each other to carry the movie the way it went. The script was well written, but if the acting was no good, even the best script can go bad. Paul Gleason was also excellent in his role and his reactions and "sternness" really set a great tone, especially with his anger toward John Bender.
Well done, a great classic, 10/10
