Blood Runs Cold (2011)
wtf only $5000
What can I say the people that made this movie are an up and coming talent to say the least. I'm an avid slasher movie fan but still I went into this one with the lowest of expectations, What can I say, when i saw that the budget for this was a measly $5,000 I thought I would be turning it off after the first 5 minutes. But this movie had me gripped after the first 10.
The story is quite basic, Winona goes back to her home town to get away from her stressful life as an artist, there she meets up with an ex boyfriend and his friends who she invites to spend the night at the creepy house her manager has rented for her out in the woods. From the the blood starts to fly.
For the budget visually it's a gem, how they managed to make it look so great with that little money is a skill in itself. Great cinematography for the genre complimented by some nice filming locations. For fans of the genre there is plenty of gore and some great looking effects, some really stood out as better and more realistic than in bigger budgeted fare. There is a decapitation at one point which is particularly impressive. The acting is another plus all the characters have personality and are portrayed well Although some kind of back story for the slasher would have been welcome.
I only have two minor gripes with this movie, first of all the American accents were quite false with tints of Swedish shining through now and again. Also where is this supposed to be set? The second problem I had was the lack of any surprise element at the end, it was a little abrupt to just finish the movie in the way they did, I even flicked through the credits hoping to find something but alas there was nothing.
Putting these minor problems aside I had a great time with this one, I was genuinely scared at a few times which is a big recommendation coming from this seasoned horror fanatic. Don't listen to the negative reviews that this is getting here I nearly did and would have missed a impressive entry into one of my favorite genres.
To the makers of this movie, I take my hat off to you.
Rovdyr (2008)
So close to the edge of my seat I was standing
Really only 5 stars? you have to be kidding me this film was great. From start to finish it kept me on the edge of my seat, I felt like my heart was going to pop out of my chest.
It is quite a basic movie as are most movies of this nature, there is not to much time spent on plot as we need to build suspense and see how the reactions of the characters play out. Its a basic story of good Vs Evil set in a 1970s Norwegian woods. A group of friends travel to the middle of nowhere to go hiking and camping(what an original idea) and end up in a fight for survival. Its your usual everyday plot for a survival horror, But for what it lacks in originality it makes up for in bucket loads everywhere else. The acting is above par along with suspense and some pretty gruesome effects. Its obvious to me that the makers of this film are big fans of the genre and have stayed true to its spirit, which for another fan makes it a great joy to watch.
As I've said the acting is superb, as we get immersed deeper into the action and the dialog becomes ever more sparse we start to see the real capability of the troupe, convincingly portraying the terror of being trapped and hunted by unknowns pushing the suspense level through the roof. Henriette Bruusgaard as Camilla stands out here in the lead role who to my surprise has only played in one other role after this.
Visually it looks great, nice grainy quality to the picture along with some solid cinematography. It feels like watching something of a similar nature from the 70s which helps add authenticity to the project. From the main titles to the ending credits it feels like an exploitation movie from the heyday of the 1970s which many movies lately have tried to achieve and haven't managed to pull off half as well as this. The sound design is also very impressive and offers a great soundtrack.
I really would like to congratulate everyone who worked on this obviously they put so much effort in and it shows. I cant find any reason to complain about this movie I enjoyed it immensely and can't recommend it enough, like a gruesome flashback to the 70s this movie stays true to the genre pushing you to the very edge of your seat chewing down your fingers to nubs. So put on the oven mitts, glue yourself to the sofa and enjoy the ride.
Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009)
under appreciated Ti West effort
This movie is really under appreciated it was a great little horror flick showcasing the up and coming talents of Ti West as a director. Sure its not as focused as the first cabin fever outing but it does well to further the story and expand the concept albeit with many flaws.
The basic story for this is that the infected water from the first movie is bottled and transported to a high school on prom night. from there the gory madness ensues. It wasn't such a bad premise and is handled well maybe falling a little short in a few places but keeps the attention, managing to keep its pace and deliver the goods at the right time.
The acting is on par with about what you would expect from this type of movie save a few performances I really enjoyed especially Giuseppe Andrews as Deputy Winston and also nice to see Mark Borchardt as his cousin Herman. But from the main cast nothing spectacular Rusty Kelley's character Alex was quite fun though Helping to add some humorous scenes to the proceedings.
On the gore factor (which I guess is why we watch these movies) it delivers plenty of blood and guts and skin peeling off to satisfy, some effects were a little off (the arm cutting scene comes to mind) but over all there's a nice amount of the red stuff.
The biggest problem I had with this movie were the animation scenes, there's one at the beginning and another that tails the movie that just kind of seem out of place in this genre. they don't really work just add a feel that they thought the running time was a little low so somebody jumped in front of the computer and quickly put something together. Another problem is the last 10 minutes i kind of understood what they wanted to do with the strip club but it just didn't feel right, it felt like a scene added from a different movie.
In the end the movie comes together quite well and offers an entertaining gore movie that fans will enjoy, if disappointing with a few of its Ideas it offers plenty of promise to look past them. Ti West did a good job with this movie definitely a director to look for in the future.
Chopping Mall (1986)
Saved by Pacing and the running time
Well the 1980's brought us some strange and schlocky additions to the horror genre sitting right up there with classics(I use the word classic in it's broadest form possible) such as Motel Hell or C.H.U.D is the technological cheese fest Chopping Mall.
The Story is about a group of teens who stay behind at night in a shopping mall to have a party at a furniture store. Only the twist is that this shopping mall is patrolled at night by robots that shoot lasers, poison darts and rip at people with their clamps (Really in 1985?).
OK so the problems start right from the beginning plagued by bad dialog even worse acting and some illogical behavior, still this movie draws you in. It's something of a spectacle. It's saving Grace is the pacing and the running time, there's never a dull moment thats for sure. The Characters are constantly on the run from psychotic robots out to dismember them, trying to figure out ways to escape or destroy the cheesy short circuiting enemy. Also the movie runs only for just over an hour it's done before it starts which is a good thing, I think if you added an extra 20 minutes to this movie it would have become a chore to watch. The special effects are quite OK also nothing to write home about though just average.
All in all this movie is an enjoyable distraction, keeping the action flowing and the claret dripping just enough to hold your interest. It would be interesting to see a remake of this for a modern market maybe with a better script and some talent.
Slashers (2001)
Bloody Disgusting (in a good way)
If your not a fan of horror or gore leave this page now, in fact forget that it exists because your not going to like this movie one little bit. For those of you who are still reading prepare for a bloody treat of over the top horror executed (pun intended)with style and to such high quality, which is surprising as to look at the budget must have been minuscule.
First of all don't expect an award winning masterpiece here just by the title of the movie you should be able to surmise that its going to be a seedy affair. Exploitation is the name of the game plenty of female nudity and gore on display just the way we like it, also it doesn't take itself seriously which I think helps this movie immensely. By keeping it light hearted the filmmakers have made it easier to look past the flaws of the movie and just enjoy it for what it is. But not to say that its shallow, with underlying satire on reality TV show's and a look into the vicarious and indifferent society in which we now live it adds depth.
The story is quite basic, think The Running man meets Friday the 13th. Our introduction to the movie is the start of an episode of the no.1 extreme TV show in japan Slashers, we are quickly introduced to our six contestants who will battle it out with the insanely demonic serial killers to win a grand prize of $12 million. We have a selection of odd ball characters to route for a politically motivated college girl to an ex soldier to a fame hungry actress all out to take fame and fortune. The slashers have a comic strip feel to them played tongue in cheek and extremely over the top especially doctor Ripper (Christopher Piggins) who steals the show here, chainsaw Charlie and preacherman (both played by Neil Napier) are also deliciously disgusting character's always ready with one liners and jumping out of the scenery to keep things interesting.
Some of the acting leaves a lot to be desired though, I think the performance of Claudine Shiraishi as Miho the host of the show was shockingly bad and made me want to turn it off in the first few minutes also Jerry Sprio puts in a surprisingly bad performance at some points as a Mexican bouncer. Thankfully the characters that bring down the movie are only on screen for a limited amount of time and the other characters do enough to make you look past this.
The production is very cheap but on a shoe string budget what the hey, the gore effects are decent enough and there is more than plenty of the red stuff splattering from start to finish.I've seen the sets for this movie compared to a paintball arena and i will fully agree with that analysis, plywood galore comes to mind. But I think its kind of fitting to the whole feel of the movie and helps it. Also the costumes are like cheap Halloween rubbish they sell at the discount store.
All in all this is a enjoyable movie which although has its flaws provides plenty of incentive to look past them and see the bigger picture. If you like gore horror then I recommend this to you highly with lashings of thick red blood, a tongue in cheek attitude and some campy over the top acting help to make this more than worth your time and a cult classic. If it wasen't for some very bad acting mainly the part of Miho i would have rated it higher, but she just brings down the quality of the first 10 minutes.
