The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
This one is a mess
This movie was a mess. The writers couldn't seem to make up their minds whether this was supposed to be a buddy adventure comedy or an action thriller. The violence in the movie was too intense for a comedy; or even a spoof on spy films. And the plot was certainly too silly for an action flick. Kate McKinnon was the reason I wanted to see this movie; I really enjoy her work on SNL. But both female leads offered up performances that felt forced and silly. Actually, the whole movie felt forced and silly. I would give it a miss; or maybe wait for Saturday night and smoke some weed before you settle in to watch this one.
Munich (2005)
Eric Bana Oscar Worthy
I have now seen all five of the 'best movie' and 'best actor' category movies for the Oscars. It is my belief that Eric Bana should have been at least nominated for a best actor spot, if not actually receive the award. In my opinion, his performance was outstanding. To me, a good actor is able to make you forget you're watching him/her as a person. Russell Crowe's performance in The Insider is a good example of this (I think he should have won for that performance instead of Gladiator). Eric Bana also pulled off the same difficult feat and I applaud him. As much as I respect Phillip Seymour Hoffman as an actor, I don't believe his performance as Truman Capote was much of a stretch for him. His mannerisms as Capote have been reflected in some of his other performances and I was constantly reminded that I was watching Phillip, not a convincing portrayal of Capote. The only challenge for him would be his voice alteration since his natural voice is much deeper than Capote's. I believe that Eric Bana should have been nominated instead of Phillip this time around because I forgot I was watching a pretty boy actor from the movie Troy and was watching a man who wrestled with himself; relishing his vengeance, justifying his actions, and finally realizing the vicious cycle he was perpetuating and acknowledging his betrayal to his own moral standards.
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
I don't understand how this movie could be thought as one of the best of all time
I had always heard about this movie and I finally rented it last night. It was one of the most badly made films I have ever seen, and I have seen a LOT of films. But you don't have to be a film student or professional film maker to notice the horrendous editing, cinematography, and acting. I will admit that the violent scenes are groundbreaking in a movie of that era. This could be the first movie to show a woman being slaughtered by gunfire, or any other kind of violence as graphically as it was depicted here. However, there was a great deal of factual inaccuracy, particularly in the final scene. The characters were badly developed and their relationships made no sense, even for a bunch of sociopaths. I wanted to believe this film was cutting edge, but it was just a lame attempt at creating a new kind of filmaking. I will admit that Faye Dunaway was interesting despite the lousy dialogue she and the other actors were forced to present. I would not recommend this movie unless you just enjoy watching bad films in your spare time.
