No Country for Old Men (2007)
This film is near perfect.
As a large proponent of "Show, don't tell", I'd say that this is in one of my top-ten movies. It's a marvel in the power understatement. Just simple actions like picking up the casing after shooting a deer make characters seem that much more real and deep. The rolling valleys, and corporate roads perfectly capture both the identity and the plight of the modern South-west. The lack of music and the addition of little background noises like the commotion in the streets, and the blowing of the wind make this movie almost seem like it's real. I felt like I was really there the entire movie. Is there plot holes? Maybe. This is a film that you have to pay attention to and pick up on the subtleties. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing I'll leave up to you. For me at least, my favorite things about this movie is the atmosphere and the subtlety. The actors also put in good performances, with Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh ultimately being the character that everyone remembers and talks about. I highly recommend this movie to people who can overcome its slow pace and general lack of explicit explanation. It's a 9.5/10, an excellent movie. And no, I don't pretend to "get" this movie. Whether you do or don't is not a sign of your intelligence, so much as how much you think this movie is worth getting into. It's not a fast-moving-action-thriller, but it's a great suspense film with near flawless sound design and cinematography.
The Vulture (1966)
This movie has absolutely nothing for nobody.
Okay, I'll make it brief: Boring acting, boring sets, boring special effects, boring motivations, boring characters, boring everything really. This film moves too slow, and leaves too much in the dark. I rarely turn off a movie half-way through, and I've sat through some horrible movies, but this one actively made me turn it off in the first few minutes, play solitaire to compose myself, and finish it. I've seen Smoking Aces 2 and Titanic 2 in their entirety without taking a break. But where those movies succeed and this movie fails is entertainment. A movie should ALWAYS, and I repeat ALWAYS entertain. Regardless of quality. That's the absolute bare minimum, and this film did not achieve it. I'll fully admit that the first scene is pretty well handled, but that for me is another problem with the movie. It makes great promises, and fails to deliver. It leaves you with higher expectations than the movie can account for. I don't necessarily demand that all movies move lightning fast like Crank, but I do expect to at want to finish the movie. No go with this one. And it's not even like the acting and special effects are bad enough to laugh at like an Asylum film. It's just flavorless, dull, and boring. If you're trying to introduce someone to the sixties, this is not the film to do it. It's a full-blown 0/10 for failing even the basics.
Clue (1985)
Looks like it came out of the late 50's, with all the genius of the 60's and the tension of the 70's.
I'll go into this review by saying that I'm a little biased toward Tim Curry. He's never turned in a performance that I've disliked. And this movie isn't much different. Spoilers, by the way. This movie is basically about a bunch of people who are trapped in a house with a psychotic killer. Only, they don't quite know who it is. Now just from the premise this sounds like a suspense-filled whodunnit, but I assure you this is one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen in my life. With it's deliberate datedness and cheese, this film mocks other films like House on Haunted Hill and whatnot, and manages to achieve an absolute zen when it comes to comedy. I fully recommend this film. The only reason why it's 9/10 instead of 10/10 is that the look and tone of the film might turn some people off. It's very far from the modern blockbusters that pave the local outhouse. I tend to view accessibility as a big thing, after all, you need your audience to WANT to seek out and watch your movie.
Prometheus (2012)
Good, but shouldn't have been an Alien prequel
Oh Ridley Scott, you've done it again. Well, to be perfectly honest, I really like this film. I had a lot of fun watching it. The ideas were honestly pretty cool. But there's just one tiny problem...What was it again? Oh yeah. Why does this film HAVE to be an Alien prequel again? That is the real fault to this film. Why? Because it forces you to notice every single continuity error. It forces you to sit impatiently and ask "Where's the Aliens?". I admittedly did that, and it was only through a second viewing (after I detached this film from any other Alien film) that I realized that this film really had a lot going for it. The acting wasn't top notch, but the actor that played "David" really did a good job. The writing was...okay. There are certain things in the film that will make you scratch your head in confusion. The design was fascinating and a joy to look at. The special effects, while a CG fest (which I usually frown upon) looked fantastic. But let's get into the flaws, and in case the little spoiler warning above the review didn't catch your attention, there will be some plot elements spoken about. First of all, what exactly is that black goo stuff? What does it do? I saw it make a woman give birth to a squid. I saw it melt a 10-foot-tall alien. But what does it do? It's never really explained what this "Bioweapon" is actually supposed to do. Second. Why do the Engineers want to destroy us? I mean, I understand that they were setting up a sequel, but I just felt left in the dark in a particularly cruel joke. Third. Why is this film an Alien prequel in the first place? I mean, think about it. It's has almost nothing to do with Alien, the sequels, or the characters in the Alien series. Seriously. Just mute the film, and turn off subtitles. Does it appear to have anything to do with Alien aside from the planet the film takes place on (which could just as easily be another planet), and the fact that Weyland Industries is involved? And again, it FORCES you to notice every single continuity error. Over all. This film really is a very enjoyable movie if you watch it as a Sci-fi Horror flick, instead of an Alien film. Go watch it. 7/10
