Gran Torino (2008)
Complete garbage
Sure, go get fooled by the rave reviews. The film is complete garbage. There is absolutely no saving grace here.
The bs that the good reviews are praising the film for, like unpredictability of life and badassery, this film is in the bottom decile on those points.
I have watched and loved many slow movies, where the punch doesn't come with in-your-face bang, but this film, my friends, has absolutely nothing in it.
I admit i watched it when it came and it has been years, but i distinctly remember how utterly and completely disappointed i felt by the end of the movie. I went on to watch other films by the director, and I must admit i don't like any of them, and find them all way overhyped.
Afwaah (2023)
Banger of a film
Sudhir Mishra saab's filmmaking is ageing like an old wine. The story is extremely well written, doesn't slack, and the climax is amazing. Movie is under 2 hrs runtime, so doesn't allow for characters to form too well as you would see in a longer film, but it never shows in the midst of the fast paced flow of the film. All performances are great. And although it feels one sided at times, it is as true a reflection of the times we live in as one can get. Mishra saab doesn't hold any punches and shows it the way it is. As Anurag Kashyap has aptly put, which I won't try to improvise, an absolute banger of a film!
Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
GOAT
Curb makes other sitcoms look like the 1950s hindi movies, so plain, bland and formulaic. Larry makes comedy look so simple, because you relate to it so much, and so difficult, because he lays it out with such incredible honesty. Seinfeld made friends look juvenile, and curb takes out less enjoyable stuff out of seinfeld and lays bare the core comedy of life that was really the core of it wrapped up in Jerry's standup. No other comedy comes even close to Curb. Curb is the Breaking Bad of comedy, or as I am tempted to say while watching the latest season, BB is the Curb of drama.
Ugly (2013)
Masterpiece
This film gets ignored a bit among the big bang films of Kashyap a bit because of the genre and a bit because of the leaked copy before release, but it reminds me of the innings of Adam Gilchrist in IPL 2008 semi-final: max purist and entertaining at the same time. The characters stay with you for a long time and it is amazing how much the director pulls off in the limited run time, reminiscent of his first unreleased Paanch. Vineet Kumar Singh is electric, though is a bit unfair to name one out of such a powerhouse acting ensemble.
This film is the signature of new bollywood.
Baby Driver (2017)
overrated
it's a solid 6.5. but since everyone is overrating this. my 6 rating is only fair. i mean there is nothing new in the story. OK, it is shot well, but nothing extraordinary. car scenes are fine. again, making it a solid 6.5 ;). it is pretentious, you can't argue with that. i am not a fan of kevin, but he is not that central to the movie either. guess that makes it 5 lines.
Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011)
10/10
Yeh Saali Zindagi is one of the films which i have watched many many times. an ensemble cast with likes of Irrfan, Yashpal Sharma, Saurabh Shukla, Prashant Narayanan, Sushant Singh and Chitrangada Singh, it gives ample chance to all of them and newcomers Arunoday and Aditi Rao also don't disappoint at all. even the junior actors are utilized so well, the kidnappers, Mehta's goons, etc. which we seldom see in Bollywood films. Irrfan is at his best once again. the dialogues are mind-blowing. all the actors have put together a gem of a movie. Sudhir Mishra shows once again, that he is still at par with the best in the business. awesome film, much underrated because of the Bollywood mainstream is hijacked by a handful, many of whom keep making nonsensical movies (even remakes of them).
PK (2014)
mediocre
I can't believe this film has 8.9 rating. there is nothing new. The director keeps on repeating his thoughts from his earlier films and others like oh my god. about 0% novelty.. less than mediocre content. no real great moment in the film. it is just an amalgamation of his earlier ideas. amir khan is just how he has been in 3 idiots.. nothing new at all. anushka sharma doesn't act much. adoloscents who haven't seen hirani's earlier works will like it. superstitious people looking to shed some of it might find some reason to do so. but for me it was quite pointless film which was much less entertaining than 3 idiots, though this one doesn't preach any dangerous ideology like 3 idiots.
Kaksparsh (2012)
Compelling Love Story
Though a Maharashtrian, I don't usually watch Marathi films. I heard this is a really good one, so took my parents (who are averse to watching film in a theatre for so many reasons) to the theatre. It turned out to be a fantastic movie with an engrossing plot.
The story moves fast without lingering on at any scene (except a couple of songs which were a little annoying because of the exceptionally loud sound in the hall), and deals with all the aspects of the story grippingly. Sachin Khedekar & Priya Bapat are awesome, and so is all the supporting cast.
As I read in a review before going for this movie, among love stories that stand out, there is Casablanca, there is DDLJ, and then there is Kaksparsh. Though targeted to a limited audience being in a regional language, this film still leaves a mark no smaller than any of the Hollywood or Bollywood counterparts.
