Miss Juneteenth (2020)
A rich and vital film
A beautifully subtle and important film. Nicole Beharie is as good as it gets, a great actress that deserves more respect for her art. Especially here. See this film. It's great stories like these that inspire and educate, simply by showing, not telling. A layered and emotionally rich portrait that everyone needs to see asap - and further supports that Juneteenth needs to be made an official national holiday already.
Atlanta's Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children (2020)
Vital and Urgent Docu-Series
Essential viewing. It's about time the truth was given a big platform like this. Watch ASAP.
Selah and the Spades (2019)
Refreshing and stylish
Selah and The Spades is a gem, no other film like it. Bold and experimental filmmaking helped subvert this genre, upside down on itself - and I loved everything minute of it. The entire film wasn't perfect but nothing really is. Def check this movie out asap.

Swallow (2019)
Problematic but admirable effort
The lingering effect of SWALLOW definitely snuck its way into my head afterwards. Haley Bennett is a revelation, and should definitely catch the attention of more directors after this star-making turn.
Impeccable craftsmanship, from the production design to the cinematography, this body-horror indie film is worth checking out and having a discussion about. But definitely do your research afterwards, to get a fuller picture about "pica," the psychological disorder that involves urges to eat nonfood items.
The Lodge (2019)
Cryptic and Cleverly Unpredictable
Just caught this gem at the local New York City AMC and The Lodge is a cryptic little chamber piece that is currently sneaking up on me. Ace horror film from a couple of fresh masters. Loved the two directors' previous collab, Good Night Mommy. The visual language is also impeccable, great production all around. You have to see to understand instead of listening to characters talk. Horror fans who love more complexity, truth and cleverness in this genre, check out THe Lodge ASAP - plus their brilliant first film Good Night Mommy (on Prime I believe!)
Color Out of Space (2019)
Visual feast and Nic Cage Shenanigans
Slightly recommending this mess of a movie because of its formal brilliance and full control of the visual medium. Plus, Nic Cage acting like a moron is funny to a certain point.
This is pure boomer cinema. Beautiful but dated obviously. Toxic dudes aren't funny, they're just annoying, as displayed in this film. If you're interested in cinematography then check this out for that alone. And obviously Nic Cage stans will be rushing to this one; I just wish he chose more progressive filmmakers to work with.
Fast Color (2018)
A Cosmic Wonder: Vital Cinema
FAST COLOR is a cosmic wonder and one of the most unique films of 2019 - Marvel and DC have NOTHING on this superhero film.
Speed of Life (2019)
Sci-fi for the Soul: 'Speed of Life' is an uncommon treat
SPEED OF LIFE is so effortlessly at ease in telling this wildly romantic and soulful story of a woman dealing with the death of late musician, David Bowie. Plus there's sci-fi, Ann Dowd and a perfect ending, the kind that will make you smile for hours afterwards.
