Black Panther (2018)
Disagree...
Marvel's BLACK PANTHER was as hyped as ANY Marvel film. The difference is that it delivered BETTER than the hype & anticipation surrounding it. No Marvel or DC film has brought a level of action, suspense, intellect, surprise and education they way Black Panther directed by Ryan Coogler has, period. The Dark Knight Batman is the sole comic film on it's level.
Obviously non-Africans and simple comic fans saw no personal connection culturally to BP so it underserved their white privilege of seeing white male heroes in 97% of comics. But for the rest of the planet who saw BP, it scored A's across the board. I respect but whoeheartedly disagree with this poster's review and it's all good, You have 97% of white-led Marvel & DC films to enjoy.
Afropunk: The 'Rock n Roll Nigger' Experience (2003)
Provocative Documentary
Excellent film. Incisive examination of the people and music that expresses the views of subculture often alienated and rarely seen and highlights a vibrant side of the scene breaking perceptions and smashing stereotypes. If you enjoyed Decline of Western Civilzation,Dogtown and Z-Boys, Style Wars, Stepping Razor Red X or The Freshest Kids you must see this; even if you're just curious for thought-provoking film check it out. Exposes the work of many pioneering bands like Pure Hell, Bad Brains, Fishbone and emerging ones like Cipher and Tamar-Kali giving a platform that you'll almost never see on TRL or 106 & Park even though they should. Check www.AFROPUNK.com for when it travels to your town and comes out on DVD this summer. You will be shocked by some things mentioned(Mariko's comments)and moved by others but definitely captivated. It already is cult phenomenon thru over 170 screenings in the past 2-plus years of independent screenings and rightfully has won accolades at festivals worldwide. Great debut for Mr. Spooner and massive potential for the future.
How to Get the Man's Foot Outta Your Ass (2003)
The best film on film-making ever---all movie fans and filmmaker hopefuls must see this, no question.
Excellent film; exposes the true guerilla film-making process. Definite required viewing for all intelligent open minded adults. Fear not not of the haters who try to down this independent masterpiece, they lead unfulfilled lives with closed minds. Compare this to any of Fellini's or Orson Welles' films on films and judge for yourself. Only Mario and Melvin have the vision to challenge and shake up the conventions of closed, biased minds as done in
Sweetback, New Jack City, Posse, Panther (DeNiro knows as a producer on this one) and even more work outside the box but with some
commercial appeal and humour. If you have the courage and intellect see it and form your own opinion.
