Green Book (2018)
Brilliant acting
The two actors, Viggo Mortensen & Mahershala Ali, have very good chemistry with one another in this film. It starts to show from the moment they share the screen at the first scene.
Viggo does a good job as a wise guy Italian American with street knowledge of life, and Mahershala does just as well as an upper class Black American
in the 60s who struggles to be among his people, yet is very musically talented.
A wonderful depiction of 2nd/3rd generation migrants of America, trying to find their place in the society around them.
A worthy watch. I felt as though Mahershala in particular really delved deep into his character and paid due homage to him. Easily one of Hollywood's gems of the current times.
Mary Magdalene (2018)
An average depiction of a wonderful tale
I found this film trying very hard to be just as good as Jesus of Nazareth, but failing to do so. Instead it tries to imitate certain scenes from the movie, frame by frame.
The visual aesthetics are pleasing to the eye, but it does not make up for the thin plot and sub par acting. Joaquin Phoenix is out of place as Jesus, as great an actor as he is. All the apostles seemed out of sync, other than Peter played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Rooney Mara had a subtle performance as Mary Magdalene, and the visual aesthetics of this movie does include showcasing her mournful expressions and emotions.
I rate it a mere 5 stars for visuals.
