What If...?: What If... Thor Were an Only Child? (2021)
Just the worst
Ignore that this is a rather dumb episode, but the point where I came here to write this bad review was when they added nukes for no apparent reason.
I am pretty sure that even the screenwriters couldn't come up with a reason, hence the line "Just in case she gets distracted by a cat." Who greenlit this at Disney? Nobody read the script before the "shooting"? Worst of all, not only did they add the nukes without any explanation, there was actually no need for it in the episode. It was irrelevant.
The only possible explanation for this is that it is some weak reference to the nukes in the first Avengers movie.
Jack Ryan: Strongman (2019)
A predictable and underwhelming outcome
Honestly, the title says it all. Just imagine the most obvious outcome based on what happened and that was it. I mean, when in episodes 6 there haven't been another player introduced, it was kinda obvious who will be the big bad guy behind the scene.
The only surprising thing in this episode was when they just flew in to the presidential palace on a helicopter and took it completely over with 5 men. If the first season was James Bond, this was G. I. Joe.
Jack Ryan was this emotional hothead. The acting and production was really good, but the writing of this season was terrible. Just a bunch of cliches rebranded as Tom Clancy.
I am changing my 10 star rating of season 1 to 8 as combined.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Possibly the best gangster movie of the millenium
The movie is Guy Ritchie at his best - great writing and great directing with his unique style.
The story is funny, has interesting plot twists and got great characters.
And those characters are also played well without exception. I really mean all of them. Just go to the main page, look at the actors in it and try to find one that did not do an amazing job in this movie. You can't.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
It lived up to the hype
First of all, this movie just works. Everything is at the right place and done the right way. Story, actors, effects, music... you name it.
No hate against Joss Whedon, he had to jump in and finish it quickly, plus he did not have the luxury to make it 4 hours long, but this version is better than the original in every conceivable way. I would prefer Snyder making all the future Superman/Batman movies with his version being canon, though it does not seem to be possible. Then again, the snyder cut seemed also impossible (I guess we were lucky that it came at the perfect time to push HBO Max).
Lastly, Ben Affleck's Batman also deserves some praise. He did a great job with the character and I am sorry that he left.
Contagion (2011)
Great movie with a bad message
It is a great movie - and in 2020 very much relevant - but I do not like that it portrays breaking the rules for selfish reasons positively.
SPOILER
1. A character playing a key role in organizing the events is breaking the rules by giving his vaccine to a small boy as a "selfless" act and what is even worse, he still puts on the bracelet showing that he is vaccinated, thus he is allowed to walk freely everywhere and nobody would suspect that he can spread the virus.
2. Another character, the main scientist eventually developing the vaccine, is shown as testing the vaccine herself - again, as a selfless act - but that is also extremely stupid, because if she is wrong, she dies and that would slow down the process.
There is a reason we don't test the vaccine on the president.
3. A woman investigating the source in Hong Kong gets kidnapped by people, who selfishly want to get ahead of others in the line for the vaccine, and she is shown as playing with the children in the village of her captors and eventually helping them orchestrating the exchange of herself for the vaccine.
They all portray selfish and reckless behavior as selflessness and kindness.
She is not just getting the vaccine out of thin air for that village (which is secluded and rather safe anyway), but also taking those vaccines from others who almost certainly would need it more.
Please, stop portraying recklessness as good in movies. If the hero is sacrificing himself that is fine, but when they are "not leaving until everybody is there" then they are risking the life of many others as well. And no, don't ask the others if they want to wait for that last member, you cannot ask them to make this decision on the spot. Rather tell them that you are leaving and see if anybody resists.
Billions: The Third Ortolan (2018)
Excitement on new levels
If you read this, then probably you are already familiar with the series (maybe even the episode), but still. Billions is one of my favorite shows, along other HBS shows like Westworld and GoT, but while those got action and effects, Billions is "just left" with its amazing story, actors, music, etc. to bring excitement. And in this episode... I literally cannot find the words for it. You need to see it to understand. They brought the heavy guns.
And to the cast and crew: shut up and take my (already well-deserved) Emmys
Heroes Reborn (2015)
Don't...ever...watch it!!!
I will be short on this, because it is very easy to explain. It sucks. But not just in global, it sucks on each every possible level. First of all: The actors. They suck the most. With a couple of exceptions, they all do. Jack Coleman's Noah Bennet is still a good character, and Jack also does a pretty good job. Judith Shekoni's Joanne Collins(the crazy sociopath woman) is basically the best performance int the whole serial. Although, I hated her character.('cause she did a good job ;) ). Pruitt Taylor Vince's character, Casper Abraham was a lovable one, and he did a good job whit it, but everybody else... The others did a horrible job. Okey, to be honest, the characters also has been written very poorly. And there is the second problem: The writing. Because they not only wrote the characters bad, but basically everything else. The whole plot is ridiculous, and I have to mention it again, THE CHARACTERS...Ahhh, okay, next one: The effects. I don't know if they were short on money(but then comes the question: Why are they doing it?), but the effects looks like they reused the ones from the original Heroes FROM MORE THAN 10 YEARS AGO. Except, now they did it in a much worse way. Because did not only sucked what they were using, but mostly how they did it. Nether was the directing good, but it is much easier to tolerate. So this is my "short" opinion on this pile of ____.
PS: And yes, I watched the whole season(I hope there wont be second), because when you have a painful zit, what are you doing? Probably trying to get rid of it by doing the worst thing to it, what only makes it more painful, and you end up with a big red mount on your face.
Sense8: What's Going On? (2015)
The singing part stole the episode...amazing work.
The episode itself is a quite good one. A little action here, a little drama there, but still what steals the episode, is the singing part. I wanted to write scene, but it is not just one scene, it is something more complex. I don't know how, but they literally found the best song for this. Amanita is even saying at some point, that "this is the perfect soundtrack for lobotomy", and actually, she is right. But it isn't just for them, the song matches for all of the characters. For their situation, their mood, even their personality. But it isn't just the song itself, because the creators connected every line, every word to the right person in the right time. Through the song, we can experience more, and we can feel more from the story. And don't forget the fact, that this is the very first time, when they are all connected, and it is amazing.
Sense8 (2015)
It feels a bit slow, but you don't even realize, and you are in the epicenter of the things.
Okay, long story short, I loved it. It reminds me of Heroes a lot. The conception is the same. People from around the globe discover, that they have an ability, and while they start to solve their own problems, they cross each other's path. To be honest, I was a big Heroes fan, I watched it even when it have lost its mojo, so maybe I cannot be neutral, but I will try to summarize everything.
The actors are at least okay, so let's say, I don't have a problem with them. On the other hand, I have with their characters and story lines. For example there is an Indian line, which I think is boring and unnecessary. I think, that the only reason, why it is in the series, because sense8 sounds better, than sense7. And why are they taking it so easy, when they realize what's going on, it isn't feeling natural at all. None of the eight freaked out, not even a bit.At first course they didn't understand what is happening, but as soon as they do
nothing. As it is the most natural thing, they just start to chat.
So, the show as complete. If I had to describe it with one word, that would be slow. But actually it is not slow, because things are happening, just they aren't very powerful. We are getting a peak into the everyday life of different people from different cultures. And no matter how interesting it is, it should be in balance with the action. But, to be honest, it has a good side too, because it creates an atmosphere, in which you can connect with the characters more, almost as they do with each other, so when finally something simple, as singing a song together, or even have a "teleorgy", comes, it can captivate you, and you really can feel, what they are feeling. I would definitively give it one more season, to see, if it was slow, just because they wanted to set up properly everything, or that was all, what they could bring out of this idea, because one thing is sure, there is a big potential in this show, so I only can wish it the best.
