*** possible spoilers *** If you're looking for a suspenseful movie that will give you a fun scare, this is it. But unfortunately, the attempted scares are executed improperly. The movie could have gone a lot farther with everything, and it still could've been PG-13, so why didn't it? There could have been a little bit more gore. There's more blood on primetime television then there was in this movie. The creeper could have been a little bit more creepy-looking. And he could've had a more interesting weapon, like a screwdriver or axe or something. A knife? How is that original? This movie lacked the elements that movies such as Halloween had. To really scare you, the murderer must be memorable. The killings need to be grotesque. It's as if they didn't even try to be unique.
Also, possibly even more importantly, it's hard to be sympathetic with the characters. There is almost nothing unique about the characters that makes you say, Oh, I wish they didn't have to die! It's hard to even cringe during the less-than-climactic murder scenes. I felt more sorry for the maid then the best friend, and that just goes to show that there was little character development. The only people you really root for are Donna and her boyfriend, because Donna's just been through so much, and her boyfriend is so supportive. But it's hard to identify with these super-nice main characters. There could have been something added in that would make the two of them a more believable couple.
Honestly, the clichés are easy to get past. Even the best horror movies have clichés. But it's the fact that the people who made this movie didn't even try to add a unique spin to it. It was like they set out to make a stereotypical, predictable movie and were pleased with what they accomplished. Any little unique touches might have made this movie more memorable, but the movie doesn't even bother to try. That's what's so disappointing. So if you want a few thrills and some suspense, this movie is a good idea. But if what you're looking for is a well-developed horror film that will keep you up at night, Prom Night is definitely not it.
