Orpheus (1950)

Surprising

Preface: I am not a fan of the avant garde and films that try hard to convey a message instead of telling a story of little interest to me. Those films are entertaining to many but not to me. I meed a story.

Main: This film I thoroughly enjoyed. The pacing was fantastic creating tension and suspense without feeling like my hand was being held or that the story was slow. I laughed at times, I cried at other points. I enjoyed all of the wonderfully written characters. The conclusion was satisfying and didn't feel out if place.

Negative: I think that even though they tried to do something different, you have some familiarity with the mythos of Orpheus to get that. I also felt there some puns or remarks that made more sense in French but that's on me.

Conclusion: Despite being based around a poet and some bizarre concepts, you are in for a treat. If you like Ingmar Bergman, you will probably like this as well.

No regrets

I'm not an artist nor am I someone who can be considered to be artistically inclined. I am not going to sit here and pretend to understand what it is that I have just watched. However I will state that in my opinion it was a pleasant viewing experience. It really is the director danglingn a bunch of shapes in front of a camera for 2 and a half minutes before being shown a human figure. Soemhow I did not mind watching this. If anything I had a good time. Would I watch this again? No, probably not however, if it was showns to me again I would not protest. It is only 3 muinutes long. It does invoke a strange sensaiotn of nostalgia but I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I had by the end experienced glee like a child being shown a sparkly toy, dread and discomfort, and confusion all at diferent intervals. Impressive.

It's honestly the greatest show of all time. The Sopranos didn't have Arians saving planets from the BBC.
