Father Brown (2013)
I can't stand him.
The writing is weak and predicable, the characters are mostly unlikable hypocrites, and 9 times put of 10, you know who the guilty party is by mid episode.
Father Brown is this insidious over the top righteous character who claims to be a man of God, however, he lies, cheats and steals to further his own needs.
I keep wishing he'd choke on a cherry tart.
The detectives, and police in general, are all written as incompetent fools, it gets a little tiresome.
I'm not sure if it's the characters or the actors that I so dislike, however, it's probably a combination thereof.
Nice country side, hence the two stars.
Anne (2017)
Could have een so much better.
The young actress portraying Anne Shirley is just as convincing as Megan Follows, which is a very high bar indeed.
The cinematography and lighting are excellent, as is the very limited musical sound score.
The writing, however, is far too dark for this story. This story of life should be told to children with a smile, not a warning.
Interestingly enough, one of the executive producers, Miranda de Pencier , portrayed Josie Pye in the 1985 version of Anne of Green Gables.
One more thing, Netflix did not produce this new mini series, the CBC did. Netflix simply has the international distribution rights outside of Canada.
Mutant World (2014)
If I could grade this lower than 1 I would!
In a word, pathetic! A bunch of Canadian actors trying to play US American militia and doing so without any charisma whatsoever. I watched this over the course of three evenings as I could not endure viewing it in one sitting. Why is it that Canadian movies rarely, if ever, use Canada as the backdrop of the story. Telefilm Canada obviously needs to re-evaluate its requirements for tax credits given to film producers that Canadian tax payers ultimately pay for. I digress . Essentially, this is a story of "Armageddon" however, not with the big screen production values we're used to but, with a YouTube fan film production, or just slightly better. Have zero issue with strong female characters however, why do strong female characters have to be empowered at the expense of the male characters. Do directors and producers really feel the only way to make a womans' character strong is to weaken her male counterpart? Really? Isn't that rather sexist to both genders? Next, I don't know why Kim Coates, who is otherwise a great actor, would associate himself with this tripe. Bad move Kim. This is some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Holly Deveaux should really plan on a fall back career, perhaps as a pole dancer, as her acting is just awful and so unrealistic. Amber Marshall is the girl from the CBC's "Heartland". Amber, may I suggest you go back to the heartland, leave the acting to real actors please. I'm not familiar with the other actors , so I'll just say their performance is lacking at best. Perhaps this is the product of terrible directing as well. And it is awful. One and a half million dollars was the estimated budget for this movie, and it shows in every aspect of this film. The money would have been far better spent giving it to a charity. It always is however. So, if it's late one night and you can't sleep, watch this movie. NO. JUST KIDDING!. Stay in bed , your dreams will probably be far more entertaining and with better continuity than this garbage.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Over the top Americana
I understand this move is from the mid 40's, when most US American's thought the United States was the only nation on the planet. (not unlike today really) But WOW! Can this move get any more Americana? I guess the writer's felt that God prefers US American's over us ordinary people.
At the beginning of the movie some "angels" are boasting about the main characters brother, that as an US American soldier, he shot down Japanese planes saving US lives. Because that's what God would want, right? They make reference to the brother again as an "All American", as though in heaven that would really be of some significances.
If they edited out the first ten or fifteen minutes, the movie would not be so absolutely intolerable from the get go. However, half way through you might feel a little numb from all the unfiltered good will by George Bailey. If by midway through this movie you don't feel like punching George Bailey's uncle in the nose, you're a much better person than I.
Made... The Movie (2010)
Absolutely horrible!
Absolutely horrible! If I could rate this "movie" lower than 1 I would. I want that 80 minutes back please.
The characters are so weak and predicable; none of them have the slightest charisma. This story could have been so much better if the characters were even slightly interesting. Tuba, main character, has zero appeal. You might feel empathy for her if she tried to fight back. Andi, typical spoiled brat in love with herself and only trying to help Tuba for her own gain. Marshell, Tuba'a brother, is probably the character I despised the most. He is so unloving of his sister it ruins the character all together. I can pretend to relate to this trash. The rest of the characters are so, again, predicable you just want to leave the room.
A horribly written story that has been told many times, but probably in a more believable way. Terrible! Don't waste 80 minutes of your day with this, turn the channel now.
Off topic, I can't understand why a Canadian produced movie has to try and look (U.S) Americanised.
