Star Trek: Picard: Penance (2022)
Finally the Star Trek we hoped for?
Star Trek: Picard, Season 1: Ok.. I guess..
Star Trek: Discovery: Stopped watching because of the woke nonsense, and because it just isn't that good. Felt like filler. Felt like they just made something to slap the Star Trek brand on for profit.
Star Trek: Picard, Season 2: Hell yeah!! Awesomeness! Here we go! Finally! Thank you!
Robin Hood (2018)
Batman Begins + Assassin's Creed = Profit
A schizophrenic movie which takes its story from Batman Begins, its combat scenes from current day war movies (squads, snipers, machine guns and RPGs included) and its wardrobe from anything historically accurate to shiny futuristic suits that could have come straight from Minority Report.
Of course no self-respecting action movie is complete without supposed seemingly "random explosions".
The movie is full of hilarious gems like people pulling ropes jerkingly while whatever is lifted up moves smooth and steady, all within the same shot.
Overall feeling: Its like watching a movie told through the eyes of a teen aged boy who plays video games way to much.
A detriment to cinema.
The Walking Dead: A New Beginning (2018)
Dear diary, today we proved again that surviving is not really top-of-mind.
"Dear diary,
Today we again took some stupid risks that could have been completely avoided. Apparently we already knew some situations were dangerous, but instead of making sure our operation would be success guaranteed by coming up with an actual plan, we went with the first half assed plan we thought of and thereby taking yet another risk. I guess in our community, we still consider lives expendable. It really amazes me though, how most of us manage to survive this far, purely by luck."
Without spoilers, this is what my diary entry would read.
Enjoyed the episode and story very much. Love the new intro.
Homeland: Andante (2018)
Again some confronting moments. This show never fails to amaze.
This episode made me realize.. my overall rating of this show was an 8, but deserves to be a 10! So I changed it :)
Not much to say about this episode other than that it is yet again a solid episode in a long line of great episodes and terrific seasons.
Star Trek: Discovery: The War Without, the War Within (2018)
We have a lift off! (almost gave a 10.. only 1 obvious annoying flaw)
I'll keep it short and sweet this time..
Pro:
Much much depth of characters; wouw!. Believable, conflicting, messy human emotions. This episode is trying to touch those far reaching emotions most shows/episodes never dare to or come close to.
(And Saru moves more alien: +1)
Con:
Dear mister camera man, could you stop acting like an amateur and hold that camera steady? I'm getting motion sickness by which I'm being pulled (ripped) out of what is other wise an awesomely immersive Star Trek experience.
(Dear mister boss of the camera man: I know the camera man is not at fault.. Don't be a newbie.. don't tell your camera man this extreme sh-sh-sh-shaking spells out "action".. because in truth, it spells out "irritation" when trying your hardest to focus on a screen that goes all over the place.. a story should come to the viewer (that's entertainment), the viewer's eyes should not be hunting for reference points frames by frame..)
Geostorm (2017)
So much effort spent, only to keep yanking the viewer out of the movie.
When a space shuttle keeps using the same thrusters used to excellerate when nearing a space station, Or using a thruster and the shuttle then starts moving into the opposite direction.
When a whole hangar the size of a military based is pumped vacum for the arrival of a single person, only to have the hangar filled with air a single instant later.
When you first float weightlessly within your shuttle to take a look through your window, noticing the spinning part of the space station which has artificial gravity by centrifugal force, only to land on the part of the space station that has absolutely no gravity, but then to still walk around like gravity is everywhere. Law of nature: If nobody on the space station is aware of the lack of gravity, then so must you.
When your highly-trained-professional-PhD-scientist-crew act like a bunch of undisciplined high school dropouts.
So much money, time and effort spent in trying to tell a convincing story, to emerge the public into a world different to our own, only to keep yanking the viewer out of his dream state because of collosal mistakes in laws of nature, economics, etc.
You'd think that people who make movies live in the same reality as the rest of us and is governed by the same laws of nature, like the rest of us.
And once the bubble of make belief is destroyed, its hard to overlook tiny editing mistakes like a female computer geek looking confused at a dialog that says "Connecting.." like she's expecting it doesn't suppose to do this when you connect something to your computer.
Painfully bad production.
Positive things about the movie:
* SFX department did a good job.
* Decor (especially the space station) felt rich and both believable while refreshing.
* Casting: I like the fact that the computer geek was a female afro-american (the opposite to my worn out stereotypical computer geekness).
* Acting: Good acting, yet new and refreshing faces which have me thinking "that could be me" rather than "that is George Clooney / someone else" (also a credit to casting).
* Computer science: Stuff made sense. Kind of sad when you realize the movie got computer stuff correct, but simple everyday physics/nature wrong.
I'm still 36 minutes into the movie (yeh I meant the part of being yanked out of the movie), but I predict that the super secret service girlfriend is in on some sabotage plot, hired by someone in the government who has a political agenda. Lets see if this movie is boringly predictable, or will actually surprise me. The plot is prolly going to be something like "this weather technology is a weapon, we can't give away this weapon"........... oh snap..
---
Ok.. ultimate verdict.. this movie was surprisingly more enjoyable then I thought.. it just started really bad.. and although some things like the source of gravity was not explained, there seemed to be a consistent logical reason for it.. And although I predicted the plot, I was wrong about the girlfriend; which was nice...... although.. I was wrong about my ex too.. -__-
The mexican at the end made me laugh. But then again, so did the part where everyone was very happy so many people had died.. that shit just cracked me up ^^
Overall, for a "save the cat" type of movie, it was enjoyable.. a bit like that movie "The Room".. :')
The X Files: My Struggle III (2018)
No story telling, rather a summary of a sequence of events. "Rushed" redefined. Bad. Very bad.
Gillian Anderson seems to hold her ground and surprisingly still comes across natural in an extremely rushed episode.
David Duchovny's acting feels void of emotion, hinging on a weird kind of boredom; like a bored child with adhd. I'm not sure if the fault is his though. I suspect bad directing maybe? But then again, what do I know?.. all I know the whole episode left me thinking: "dafuq I just watch?"
I never write reviews.. in general I'm not even that critical.. but what I saw just compelled me to write something.. and to think this is one of my favorite shows.. :s
Wouw.. I'm impressed.. still surprised.. baffled really..
