US aimed entertainment

The further historically removed we get from WW2, the more comical these productions get. It's almost feels like chatgpt hallucinations at times watching this, like certain parts are just hammed up to 11 to sell the nationalistic propaganda.

One thing I liked about this was the point of views one normally doesn't see, like the stress of navigating and planning missions.

So storywise I definitely prefer Catch-22 over this, but the production of Masters of Air is well shot and produced, well acted and well produced. And while they didn't have infinite money for CGI, it is excellently spent.

So to summarize: This is less Band of Brothers, but more The Pacific mixed with Fury.

If this hadn't had so much nationalistic cringe it would've easily gotten 7 or 8, but who is buying this shtick in 2024?

Napoleon (2023)
6/10
I didn't know what I expected, but neither did they
2 December 2023
The movie is pretty, and I didn't yawn once even though it is over two and a half hour long. I wanted to see more of the early stuff with Robespierre.

But instead I got a movie that jumped around Napoleon's relationship with Josephine, and by the end I was thoroughly confused as to what I had just watched and why it took so long to tell what it did.

For me it's a 5.5/10 because it's still a pretty movie with great scenes, so it's at least watchable, but there is not much history worth learning here. The only thing I took away from this movie was the fact that horses are bred for different environments and the two islands Napoleon was exiled to was Elba and Saint Helena.

Guns Akimbo (2019)

Not a masterpiece, but better than average
7 October 2023
What I remember about this movie after more than a year has passed since I watched it is all the really cool shots and the colours. The story is fairly simple what with it being an action movie, and there's a twist thrown in there pretty formulaically.

But the actors, the soundscape, the cinematography and the speed helps elevate it to a decent level. Maybe it's because I watched "Free Guy" around the same time, but I feel like the two titles aren't far apart theme-wise, so if you enjoyed one you'll probably the other.

So like other reviewers has recommended: If you turn your brain off, or your brain already is turned off (eg. Hangovers) then you'll probably enjoy this rush of a movie.

"Purists" hate this one trick
29 August 2023
It's kind of funny seeing one episode rated this much, and also rated this high, yet the reviews being this split. And you know why that is: Purists hate inconsistencies. You got someone wearing the wrong badge? *BAM* that's a 1/10 review. I'm sure you can guess the rest.

But this episode is special. I've watched and laughed at this at least 3 times, almost in a row. It's the perfect mix of Star Trek concentrate and Star Trek dilution that forms the perfect Star Star Trek solution. The seriousness of SNW and the sillyness (yet admiration and respect of Lower Decks), and the writing, is on display here and at their best.

If you were ever curious about what new star trek was up to: Watch this episode. Then take a look at lower decks.

Scifi concept alone is worth a watch
28 June 2023
The Cube is one of those 'just on the verge of becoming a cult movie' titles that unfortunately doesn't quite stick the landing, but it'll leave you thinking of just "what even is the point.." to many things afterwards.

Is it social commentary? Philosophical? Perhaps. But not obvious when watching it as it tries to entertain you.

Content warning for body horror, although as a teen watching this on VHS, the effects are pretty awesome and not something you forget easily, heck, the Resident Evil movie that came not soon after this one even lifted one of the horrible ways someone can die - and hint hint, the title gives it away.

8 is perhaps a high score, because while it is memorable and definitely worth watching for any true scifi fan, it is pretty hammy in most other aspects.

Well executed, but too many twists and turns
14 February 2022
I can see how people might feel this is a solid 9 or even 10, but as I binge watched this I felt the story progressed too intense for my liking. And that's my only complaint, because the acting, camera and sound work is excellent!

So many characters to like, and a unique plot and a sort of Dr. Brain character as the lead. A must watch for people enjoying police stories and don't have time to binge it all at once. Worth watching in smaller bites as each episode takes a while to digest.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020–2024)

Kind of sad to see this review bombed
9 September 2020
Just look at the votes, over 1/6th have given this a 1. And if you look at demographics it's unsurprisingly men that have given lower votes. And why? This is far better than Discovery or Picard. This is clearly a response to Seth MacFarlane's "The Orville". So what is it people dislike about this series?

I can't say this is the best thing I've ever watched personally, but it's not >BAD<, it's at most mediocre, and in fact, I had a hard time stop binging this making it an above average production. The worst I can say is how "hectic" it is, like, they purposefully don't leave in pauses between people talking or scenes. Definitely a product of its day, but it's quite stressing.
