As a result they tend to bully and abuse people that disagree with them.
The great thing about being online is that such people have to use words rather than physical force.
It is interesting to see them getting angrier and angrier when they do not succeed in forcing people to agree with them.
People who comment on the more macho style films like Jaws or The Punisher are best to get a response from. Maybe because they relate to some of the characters too closely, they tend to respond more vigorously. Treat them gently..... if they keep their blood pressure rising, they will burst sooner or later.
The important thing to note here is that I talk about challenging bullies, not opinions. People who immediately become aggressive and use strong language, complain about other people expressing their opinon and start to tell them to go elsewhere or question why they are on a board at all, or those who start by focusing their argument on the person writing rather than trying to tackle the point that has been made.
I make no apology for this, I enjoy taking time to illustrate how to challenge without abuse.

Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge (1888)
Amazing
On the main page the link to the video clip at the Leeds University website, I believe is a clip of the Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge film, although, sadly, the website does not make this clear.
To be able to see people from nearly 120 years ago, walking and moving is quite incredible, like a window into a different age. The movement of the carriages, horses and people makes history come alive. I feel privileged to have seen it.
Take a look, this is one of the oldest moving images you are ever likely to see.
I am surprised there are no more significant links to this entry and the Roundhay film on IMDb. I think it is something to be celebrated.
The English Patient (1996)
Too much film, too little subject matter
If I had to choose one word to describe this film, it would have to be tedious.
I am always surprised that some people seem to rate the film highly and would be interested to come across an explanation that stood out as encapsulating the feeling people have for the movie.
I have seen some comments about the love theme (sigh) but there are so many films which cover that so much better.
I think there are many disjointed scenes which do not relate to the overall plot (such that it is) of the film. The overall story is too thin to be worth the agonising slowness of the development.
This film could perhaps have made some impact as a slightly diverting short story.
I think the warning to the viewer comes in the occupation of the main character. He is a map maker mapping the Sahara Desert. This cannot be the most exciting of tasks for the main character to undertake. However it does rather set the scene for the remainder of the film.
No doubt there will be posts after this one singing the praises of the film and expressing how wrong those who disagree are. I guess it is a film which will continue to leave some loving it and others loathing it, both with equal passion, (which incidentally I find lacking in the film).
The Swimmer (1968)
Burt Lancaster gives a fabulous performance, as he does in all his appearances.
I have not watched this movie for some time now, but it is one of those films that always reveals more on each viewing. It is quite a clever study of Ned Merrill, the world he lives in and the people he associates with. Each encounter reveals a little more about Ned.
Nothing, however allows one to expect the ending (I will not mention it here for fear of spoiling it for someone who has not yet seen it).
I love the way the film finally cuts through the meaninglessness of the life Ned has known in the past. For me the film gave a message about there being more important things in life than swimming pools and status.

The Langoliers (1995)
Some disappointments but Good Enough
I think this film has enough good points to be enjoyable. The story is a good one, and suspense is well maintained by making the Langoliers some distant threat until later in the film. The film spends a good amount of time exploring the concept of a world in the past, in decay. The characters also are developed enough so one cares about what happens to them. I think the idea of the young girl who was blind, having some kind of insight did not quite work and I could not decide whether it was patronizing and stereotyping.
Also the script and some of the acting let down the film in places. I could almost feel some of the actors trying to carry other members of the cast who I shall not name but I have not seen him in any other film before or since.
To end on a positive, I liked the way in which the film treated all the characters as valuable players in the situation and there was not one all conquering hero who dominated and led the film in the familiar unrealistic flawless superman type way.
Worth watching.
