Galaxy Quest (1999)
perfect... if you're bored
I didn't want to go to this movie when it was first out. I didn't expect a good movie. And later I forgot about it. Somehow I found a copy of this movie last week and watched it today becasue I didn't had anything else to do. Well I was really bored and it really entertained me. The jokes are entertaining. I laughed for 5 minutes to the countdown scene. And the speaking of Termites are very funny. Visual effects are quite well. Honestly effects are better than I have expected.
I say you, if you don't have anything to do and looking for an easy film to watch and laugh, don't miss this one. It will worth the time you spend.
Flatliners (1990)
Don't be deceived on the title
I really wanted to see this movie. I mean the idea is very interesting. Medical students tasting death and coming back to solve the mystery of death. The first 15-20 minutes of the movie is good. But that's it. The rest of the movie is really ruined. You have a quite interesting idea to make a movie and you make a below-standard horror movie. Totally disappointing. Even myself could write a really better scenario with this idea.
And some absurdities. You kill someone on purpose. Stays dead for 2-3 minutes. Turn him back to life. And go to have breakfast on the same morning. :) Does it make sense? I'm a molecular biologist and keep the cells at least at -20 degrees cold to keep undamaged. I don't think that you can prevent the brain damage with a cold blanket. I wish they had a better medical adviser. I don't recommend this movie if you just want to watch this movie because of it's name and tagline...
Ghosts of Mars (2001)
loss of time
I wasn't expecting much before I watched the movie but it was worse than I expected. The disappointment begun just at the beginning of the movie. The cop begins to tell the story, so you know who will survive and who will die. You just wonder how they will die. And other things you wonder stays unanswered.
A LITTLE SPOILER
There are lots of question marks left at the end of the movie, and some absurdities. What is the ghost actually? If it's really a ghost or spirit which can possess people, why cannot it pass through the doors and walls? How did the women resist to the ghost? Because of the drug she took or because of her strong will? They mention that the society on mars is matriachial and that's it. There is nothing about this in the movie. Why did they need to mention this? What are the needles and metal things hanged on everywhere with metal wires? And of course why did the possessed people wear and behave like cavemen?
END OF A LITTLE SOPILER
I don't even want to mention the flashback technique wich ruined the movie. I say this movie is a loss of time. Go watch something else.
Gemide (1998)
Funny and dark as hell!
I always complain about the language of Turkish movies. You can see a street punk or a bad gangster speaking with a perfect language. No slang, no bad language. So none of this movies could reflect the characters. In the latest movies this was overcome. But this movie is reflecting the characters perfect. Everything is as it should be. Besides, the acting and the story is very good for a low budget movie. I didn't know that Erkan Can was such a good actor before I saw this movie. Especially the marijuana scenes are perfect and funny as hell. It's said and confirmed that they were really high during the making of these scenes. The story is original also. Four randy, junkie and accidentally murderer sailors and a virgin prostitute in a sand ship. You think what will happen.
I strongly recommend this movie to especially Turkish young. You can learn some creative curses like "Elephants are f..king in my head" or "Bears are screaming in my ass"
And some facts about the movie:
Some scenes in this movie were used in another movie:"Laleli'de Bir Azize" (A Saint in Laleli). For example in the the bar scene, the man who walks in front of the bar is starring and the woman who enters the bar is a walk on. But in "Laleli'de Bir Azize", the same location and time but with another camera, the woman who enters the bar is starring and the man who walks in front of the bar is a walk on.
The movie was made before the Kocaeli earthquake on August 17th. In a scene the captain says "The buildings made with the sand we collect from the sea will return to the sea" In the earthquake, the buildings made with sea sand in Kocaeli was buried into the sea. And the movie was aired on television for the first time at the night of the earthquake. :? Interesting
In Enemy Hands (2004)
A good one
This is not the best U-Boat movie I've ever seen but it has an original story. It's an ordinary Hollywood war movie, but not an ordinary U-Boat movie.
It's end is predictable of course because the winners write the history (and make the movies) but inside the story you can see some surprises.(or unexpected things) If only they wouldn't insist putting some love stories into war movies to make reasons for the men to try to stay alive. A man has more reasons than love to stay alive :)
Anyway it worths to spare time to watch...
SPOILER Still something disturbs me, like Germans speaking perfect English (not even accent), meningitis in a submarine- no precautions, everyone stays close for days with open rashes- and it's not spread as expected... SPOILER
