The Strays (2023)
Fresh idea and way to do film
I found this movie to be an interesting take on the trauma caused by certain people. There's a big reveal in the movie and I'm not in the business of discussing because I don't like to spoil the fun for others but it's a fresh take on the thing that it does! I really enjoyed the acting performances from the whole cast and really appreciated the unique telling of the tale. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary this is a great wtf is going on type movie with a decent pay off. There is a certain scene that deals with lifting weights that prevents me from eating the movie higher. Like I get it but come on.. that was just too easy. Great job to all involved though. Amazing performance particularly by the young black actress.
Unwelcome (2022)
Very fresh and engaging movie
I have never seen a movie quite like this one. I was thoroughly entertained the whole way through. You will never be able to guess exactly what's going to happen next. This movie is shocking, scary, fun, hilarious and ambitious as all get out. Major props to the director for breaking almost every rule in the book to give us a fresh and engaging movie. How often is it that a movie introduces you to a completely new type of villain and folklore? There is also a gamete of interesting and colorful shots that make the movie pop. This movie is honestly probably a 9 for the niche funny/scary genre it's in.. for what it is, it's excellent! Give it a try! I did, and I wish more people would so I could have others to talke about it with!!
Matriarch (2022)
The 1 star reviews are an absolute joke and unfair
This movie is wayyyy too good to be rated in the 4s and if you read the reviews you can tell the people writing them aren't real horror fans. The bad reviews for this movie seem like they're coming from Hulu watchers looking for fuller house or something.. I love horror movies and know how hard it is to get my hands on a decent one at this point so I think this movie deserves some credit. Having said that..
This film is a very dark folklore esq tale "hints of films like ritual, hereditary, and the witch". Matriarch depicts alcohol and drug abuse with a great sense of realism as well as showing us a broken mother/daughter relationship that feels very familiar to real life.
I think the concept applied in this film was very fresh and executed intelligently. It felt sort of taboo to watch at times in a good way.. like I shouldn't be seeing this but I'm so glad I get to peer in on this dark and dangerous world from the safety of my living room. The actors gave top notch performances as well.. couldn't have asked for more there. Very good horror movie. B+ from me.
Castle Rock: The Queen (2018)
Wow
Best episode by far.. so different from all the other episodes, amazing story telling, so chilling and sad. They took a big risk on this episode and it payed off big. I couldn't believe how touched I felt at the end. More episodes like this please.
Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life (2018)
Enjoyable. You'd have fun watching it with your grandpa
This special was interesting and insightful.. it was fun hearing the stories these two had to share about their lives as stars and Steve Martins' banjo performance was killer.. I seriously loved the original piece that was composed. Martin short also had a pair of Sinatra Esq pipes on him I didn't realize he had. It's not laugh out loud humor ALL the way through, BUT it is really entertaining and I wish my grandpa was still alive because I know he would have absolutely loved watching this special with me.
Dead Man's Line (2018)
Style style style!!
I'm not sure how to describe it but the director uses what seems like a whole new type of documentary style to get this unbelievable true story across. I wasn't expecting anything too special coming into watching this movie. I had no idea I'd be watching possibly my fav doc ever. You won't just be on the edge of your seat in complete wonder of what will happen next.. Dead Mans Line will get under your skin and cook your goose.. The end result will leave you floored.
