The Russian Woodpecker (2015)
a unique way to demand answers that affected millions of people
i saw it after i downloaded it from vimeo.i was very expectant and curious.years before i experienced first hand the inexplicable sound of woodpecker transmissions,i never understood the illogical process that led to the detonation of the chernobyl reactor and could not comprehend the reasons behind such a deep hate as the one between ukraine and Russia. all these were perfectly exposed and explained in this almost perfectly composed cinematic production. a movie in which documantation, action and narration are interwoven and indistinguishable .the hero, following his intuition, manages to connect the dots and give answers where twenty years later an official answer is still missing. the chernobyl catastrophe was not an accident but a crime against humanity and justice must be done. most interestingly, now that the woodpecker transmission can be heard again in our receivers.
O heimonas (2013)
a little pearl from a "primer" director and his companions
This nice pagan story ,could have happened anywhere, flows like a dream for 101 min. That is, a narration of the unusual and at the same time simple way of Nikos- the young actor who plays the writer and the son in three different ages- to solve two imminent matters; to write a book and to find out how his father died. So, in middle winter, he decides to leave his exquisite Lovecraftian apartment in London and visit incognito (mother and bunker included),his old family house where he lived as a child, but now almost a ruin somewhere on the snowy mountains of North Greece. And, LO And Behold, we watch the young civilized man arriving at his old home and among the innumerable practicalities he has to confront on his every step,he starts his"Opus" by down-spiraling his memory to his early days. A total "going back to my roots" ,that will reveal the killers of his father and the story for a book. A magnificent sound and a splendid picture make this movie one that i recommend almost for everyone.
