Warm Bodies (2013)
Childish, Cheesy and Boring.
I decided to watch this one weekend afternoon because it's received decent reviews and was recommended to me by a co-worker. I was very disappointed. If it wasn't for the last portion of the movie I would have given it a 3/10 but the ending somewhat redeemed it. However, the fact remains that the first 3/4 was very boring and cheesy. It felt like they were trying too hard to create something different and funny. What resulted was not what I had hoped for. There was so much error in logic (what logic there can be in a zombie type movie). It just didn't make any sort of sense. Throughout the movie I kept hoping for it to improve, increase suspense or at least keep me interested. Unfortunately, it did not. I would classify this as a B level horror film meets chick flick. Not something I would recommended unless your only other option is watching something Tyler Perry created.
Arrow (2012)
Down Hill Battle
I started watching this show from day one and enjoyed it at first. It began strong, full of action and the story line seemed to be going in the right direction. However, soon after it started to feel more like a cheesy soap opera. The acting seemed forced and overdone. The current rating I think is an exaggeration based on the first few episodes. I have now stopped watching it because I can't afford to sit around and watch a show I no longer enjoy. I have also spoken to several other people who feel the same way. If this show still appeals to some people, that's great, but I'm certainly not one of them. Hopefully it will turn around but until then I'll be watching Californication :).
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
Half Decent and Very Frustrating
The Lost World starts out fairly strong but then drastically goes down hill. The first thing that didn't make sense to me is why Jeff Goldblum has a black daughter. That threw me for a loop and I wasn't sure why they didn't just cast a white actress (would of made more sense). However this was the least of my concerns. It's so frustrating to watch a thriller and see the characters constantly making poor decisions which lead to their downfall. For once I would love to watch a film and have the characters actually make wise choices so I'm not left yelling at the television. What ruined the second half for me were the far-fetched and exaggerated situations. I understand it's a movie but common, you could at least make certain parts realistic. It almost reminded me of a cartoon it was so fake. It was similar to a slasher film where the victim is sprinting away from a walking killer yet the killer constantly remains close behind (one of my biggest movie pet peeves). An example was when Julianne Moore was stuck in a building being pursued by a raptor. She managed to climb up at least 2 or 3 stories while on scaffolding even before the raptor had entered the building, all of a sudden she makes it to the top and the raptor is right behind here. WHAT!? I also found it frustrating that no one closed the door behind them when they entered a room. THERE'S RAPTORS BEHIND YOU! My final frustrating issue was at the very end when they managed to bring a T-Rex back to the mainland. Apparently a locked up dinosaur within the boat was able to kill everyone aboard? There were limbs scattered around the ship yet the dinosaur had yet to reach the surface. The movie showed a severed hand attached to the ships steering wheel which apparently was bitten off by a T-Rex within a little cabin yet the cabin remained perfectly in tacked. Am I the only one who sees the complete impossibility of this? The only reason I didn't award this movie a 4/10 is due to the great cast and the fact I love adventure/thriller/sci-fi films. Ughhh why did the worst Jurassic Park have to have Julianne Moore in it, wish she was in the first or third.
Dante's Peak (1997)
Entertaining Disaster Flick
I want to direct the first part of my review to the idiotic people giving this film poor reviews. I got exactly what I expected and then some. This is a disaster movie, and a good one at that. People who submitted a poor review must have been expecting an entirely different genre. I read reviews where people criticized it because "the cast contained too many unknown actors." That is the biggest line of B.S. I've ever heard. You've got Pierce Brosnan who two years prior had played James Bond in Golden Eye (his best James Bond in my opinion), and Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor). At the time these were two A list actors. Then I read people mentioning the acting was poor. It's a disaster movie! The acting was absolutely fine and even the children were strong in my opinion. The only negative I could see, which is present in almost every adventure/thriller/disaster/horror movie is when no one listens to warning or concern from the main character. But that's what makes these films. Just putting myself in the situation, I can imagine the frustration Pierce faced when he clearly sensed danger but no one took his word. However this is required to create suspense and allows a build up to the films climax. What I appreciated about the plot is how the grandmother essentially caused all the issues that led to putting the family in harms way then she sacrificed herself to save the lives of the others. I gave Dante's Peak a 7/10 as a general review. If I was rating strictly based on disaster movies I would rate this at an 8.5/10. Definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.
Misfits (2009)
Absolute Garbage without Robert Sheehan !!
This WAS my favourite show when it first aired. Season's 1 and 2 were hilarious and I couldn't wait to watch the next episode. After the second season I heard Robert Sheehan would be leaving to pursue a movie (I believe). When I heard this I was raging. He absolutely made the show, without him its just a group of boring kids. The first thing that irritated me about the third season (other than the absence of Robert Sheehan) was the new found powers of the characters. The one girl is now a rocket scientist and Curtis can change into a girl? Sooo ridiculous! I watched the first three episodes of the third season and that was all I could handle. The plot and story line were terrible! Season 1 and 2 get a 10/10. If IMDb permitted a zero rating, this show would now deserve it.
Bring back Robert Sheehan! Otherwise good luck.
The Grey (2011)
High Hopes Deflated
The reason for my 5/10 review is strictly based on the ending. In my opinion this movie could have easily been 8/10 with a few tweaks. I can't believe everyone died! I love these type of movies where characters get stranded and are forced to survive, especially when being pursued by a pack of wolves or another creature. Positives include the diverse personalities of the characters, Liam Neeson's knowledge and survival expertise and several intense attack scenes. The flash backs of his father and sick wife helped improve the storyline and evoke emotion within the viewer.
Negatives: The Ending
John Carter (2012)
Excellent Sci-Fi
Wasn't sure what to expect with this film based on the current 6.9 rating but I was more than pleasantly surprised. Excellent story line, plenty of action and quite a few comedic moments. What more can you ask for? John Carter gets teleported from Earth to Mars where the planets gravity is considerably weaker. This allows John Carter to jump higher and run faster, not to mention his increased strength. Some of my favourite films are about individuals who obtain some sort of power. I still don't understand why its current rating is so low. The only negative aspect I could see some people having is the length of the movie, which in my opinion was too short. I think they could have easily extended it by another half an hour.
I hope they make a sequel. This will definitely be added to my blu-ray collection.
The Reef (2010)
Ughhh ... Disappointed
Could have been so much more. This is one of those films where you don't feel sorry for the victims and actually get frustrated by their actions. Predictable horror/thriller movie. The characters essentially cause their own downfall by acting like fools. They were specifically instructed to not splash around in the water (because this aggravates sharks) yet they continually did so. To sum it up, this is an hour and a half film where 90% consisted of a group a people floating in the water. The only upside to this movie are the quick clips of the great white shark. I would only recommend watching this film if your next best alternative is watching Battlefield Earth (with John Travolta).
