Our Flag Means Death (2022)
Well, that was a waste of time!
For a concept with such obvious potential, the best this manages is to be occasionally amusing, instead continuously lumbering from obvious cliché to tired-out plotline.
At it's heart is the writers' dilemma of trying to portray pirates as the likable heroes whilst unable to endorse their behaviour. Thus the characters are trapped between blundering ineptitude, clichéd pop psychology, and identity-affirming pronouncements.
The only residual interest I have in the second season is how the writers will manage to maintain the tone of the show to the characters ill-fated ends - which surely have to arrive within the first few episodes.
Strike: Troubled Blood: Part 1 (2022)
Wooden and expository dialogue
Seriously disappointed here - whatever happened to the acting. Have they decided to hire an amateur dramatics company for this?
The dialogue in this season has become wooden and painfully expository. I definitely don't remember the previous seasons being this amateur.
It's been painful watching - or listening, rather - to be fair, the visual styling is still good, and on paper it should be a solid show. But I just can't get over how much of a let-down the acting has become in this season - entirely detracts from any quality in the original story.
Hopefully they'll up their standards for the next book.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Continues to disappoint
Six episodes in, and the action we've all been waiting for finally arrives! And even that manages to disappoint! Not only are the battle sequences are disjointed and fail believability, but they can't seem to manage to fit more than one Orc in a fight sequence - how they managed to spend so much, and end up with such a lame outcome is seriously beyond me.
Similarly, the acting continues to underwhelm, with almost all of the performances unnecessarily cliched and contrived.
Honestly, I wanted to like this, but it seems the writers and showrunners simply aren't up to the task - whether narratively, casting, or the graphics and effects.
