Abominable (2006)
Did we see the same movie?
After seeing a lot of positive reviews here I was looking forward to a nice uncomplicated horror movie.
The opening scene was promising, creepy atmosphere, good sound effects, some gore. The first half of the movie was able to live up to expectation. Even though the sound effects where overdone and sometimes inappropriate, the movie kept a grip.
This tension was however totally lost when we get to see the full monster at about half way. No creepy sounds or gory murders during the rest of the movie could make up for this abominable cheap Halloween costume.
This creature simply should have stayed in the dark...
The Seventh Scroll (1999)
When will there ever be a "real" director brave enough to film a Wilbur Smith epos??
If you are a real Wilbur Smith fan, The Seventh Scroll TV mini series will probably be very hard to watch till the end. At least, for me it was. The script is way too simple; a lot of times the dialogs do not fit the character speaking, especially hapi's dialog. Besides that, the acting is unrealistic. For example, the "bad guys" at the beginning of the film look more like a caricatures then criminals. The only actor giving away some form of performance it the one playing Taita. He is probably also the one with a script closest to the text from the books.
If only a real movie director would have the courage to take on of Wilbur Smiths series and make it into one or more descent movies...
Zatôichi (2003)
Yes...and....no (beware possible spoilers)
Despite the mentioned CGI blood, introduced within 2 minutes of the beginning and does look fairly cheap, this movie starts out very promising. However, near the end you start to wonder wether you will get to know the background of the main character. During the movie he is exposed by the "bad" guy, however, why and how never becomes clear.
Another thing which caused a mayor "What the F###" reaction were the rithmic scenes, which were almost copy pasted directly from dancer in the dark and, especially at the end, where totally inappropriate.
However, all that besides, Zatôichi is a movie worth watching, for the fighting, the costumes and the atmosphere..
