Ten Minutes to Midnight (2020)
Caroline Williams at her ferocious best!
For Veteran late-night radio host Amy Marlowe (Caroline Williams famously known for her role as radio host Stretch from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 ) the past 30 years have gone by in a flash. Her time is coming to a close. A dark stormy night, a potential young replacement Sienna (Nicole Kang) is eagerly awaiting to fill her soon to be vacant seat - now add in being bitten on the neck by a bat - all hell will break lose!
Ten Minutes to Midnight is indeed a tale of vampirism and transition. Directed & written by Erik Bloomquist (Long Lost), it is a film that combines the vampire movie sub-genre & it's concepts and spins a mind-bending ride.
There is a line in the movie about how "the obituaries are always found near the funny papers", and in many ways it's a line that describes Ten Minutes to Midnight: a film that deals with serious issues and bloody violence, but does so with a high entertainment factor that enhances both the themes, and stakes (pun intended) at play.
Amy Marlowe (Williams) delivers a fierce performance portraying a character who resents a life in which sacrifice and humiliation was paid, and is driven to the edge due to the impending transition forced upon her. Bloomquist indeed asks Williams to "go there" on numerous occasions, and she obliges 100%.
The Special (2020)
A big box of WTF?
Suspecting his wife of infidelity, Jerry is persuaded by his best friend to accompany him to a brothel to sample 'The Special', which proves to be a lifechanging experience in more ways than one. The Special is one of those films that stays with you long after the credits role. Harrison Smith knows his horror. He understands how less is more and The Special is actually a quiet, dark film - no jump scares but a masterpiece, pure and simple. - @Aussieguy
Martyrs (2015)
Hacked to s&*t (and not in a good way)
First off, I'm a big fan of the original French version of Martyrs (2008). This is one of those movies that stays with you long after you have watched it. When I heard of a remake for the American audience, I thought it would be great and would love to see what could be done with it. I went into seeing this movie very excited. It starts off similar to the French version, but seemed to lack a bit of the eerie atmosphere the original had. The characters seemed a bit more likable in this version, so I started to get a bit more excited about it the further it went.
The story then take a left turn and seems very rushed once all of the action starts. The original version is a lot bloodier and contains a lot more violence. This version hints to the violence taking place but never shows whats going on. The ending, which in the original, is the part of the movie that sticks with you, is hinted to, but again, never shown. I recommend that if you do decide to watch this movie, what the original version first. Hey America, if you're going to do a remake, do it properly and don't hack a film to shite!
