Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
If you like Forgotten Reals world, you will enjoy this
I won't lie - I'm a huge fan of the world this movie takes place in, and I really like Chris Pine, so you can bet everything you own I went to the cinema already thinking I'm going to simply love this movie.
And I did.
Chris was marvelous in his role of Edgin, the jack of all trades, and do not even get me started on Michelle as Holga the barbarian. My boyfriend have never even played anything from this universe, and even he was laughing at the appropriate places, and intrigued at other.
The whole movie, I laughed at the comical relief parts, and almost cried at the parts that weren't quite so funny. It kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time, and damn right I enjoyed it to the very last moments which were rather predictable, yet no less enjoyeable.
Definitely recommend, and hope to watch this movie at some later date, too!
Vyssí princip (1960)
In terms of higher principle
This movie is based on a story written by Jan Drda; a story of the same name. Personally I like the story more than the movie, but both of them have strong message in them.
"In terms of higher principle, murder of a tyrant is not a crime!" This is a part of the fiction, as well as the movie, where I'm fighting tears, because the whole scene is just so emotionally charged. Is the movie propaganda? Maybe. Or maybe not. Maybe it's just a movie, based on a story, that on itself is based on real incident happening during Heydrich affair, adding bits and pieces, and most of all, genuine humanity, into a time where humanity, and the higher principle, had been sadly lacking.
Morozko (1965)
Classical piece of Russian Fairy Tale
As nearly everyone from Czech republic could tell you, this movie is classics (of course, I know some people who never watched this movie - not because they don't like fairy tales, but because it's a nice pose to not like anything Russian), so it's no wonder they show it so often in the TV - and people still watch it, and can quote whole passages from the movie by heart.
I can't speak for English dubbing, as I've never heard it, but the Czech one is absolutely excellent - a true masterpiece as far as dubbing is concerned. And the story! There is humour, there is healthy dose of mysticism and magic, and good winning over the evil, just like it should be. Of course, if you are not at least minimally aware of Slavic folklore, half of the movie will not make much sense to you - but if Steven Spielberg could find this movie breathtaking, obviously its creators did something right.
Princezna se zlatou hvezdou (1959)
... or the marital problems of royalty
So, Princess Lada is quite of the age to get married - and one of her suitors, the only one we see in the movie, is King Kazisvět, whom the princess does not want to marry, but decides to give him what she obviously thought an impossible task - to make her different dresses, one with colours of morning, the others with colours of noon and the last one in colours of the night. Each of these dresses is showed off with a swirl of dance, and music that fits the time of the day - but of course, Lada is not content and claims that King Kazisvět didn't fulfill his part of the deal, which I always thought damn unfair towards him (and really, we women obviously do not know what we want).
So, what is the next best way how to proceed with the plot? Have the King declare war, if she doesn't agree to marry him, and have the Princess escape while wearing a masquerade, while the plot continues, to have her meet another King, who is in search of a wife, and poof, he want to marry the masqueraded princess, who lays her masquerade off only for th evening. Of course, there is a happy ending, and King Kazisvět looks like an idiot, but hey, Princess married the other King and everything ends well, no? This is the only fairy tale that was made that the dialogs rhyme the whole time - not sure about translations, but in original, it's a bit like one long poem.
Not bad, but ever since I watched that movie for second time as a kid, I always thought that poor King Kazisvět had been cheated on.
El segundo nombre (2002)
Something not that good with awesome soundtrack
The movie was simply weird, and not weird in any interesting sense. The main character spends most of her screen time by hysterics and running around like headless chicken, by snapping at everyone like it would be going out of style - I understand that she is going through a very difficult time and all that, but still it surprised me quite a bit that someone didn't just slap her to snap her out of it, as I probably wouldn't do much else than to slap her every five minutes, so she would make at least a bit of sense.
All in all, if not for the occasional really thrilling moment and interesting music, this movie would very easily get a complete zero from me.
The Saint (1997)
Cliché upon cliché
I think that if there was a hitparade of clichés this movie would hit most of them.
Story of tragic children love, which leads to the main character being a human chameleon, who picks his names after Catholic saints until he's tasked with stealing formulas from lonely romantic scientists, only to fall in love with her and risking everything just to save her from the terrible villains (who, according to number of other clichés, are Russian). Of course, she searches for him, and once again, the star-crossed lovers are running for their lives. Of course the whole movie ends well - the thief escapes the clutches of Justice, and poof, happy ending.
Giving the rating I did mostly because I like clichés and because I liked how villainy the villains were. Oh, and for Frankie. I really liked her character.
Lucy (2014)
Six out of Ten sums it up
I gave this movie 6 out of 10. I would give it 5 out of 10, to tell the truth, but I like Morgan Freeman too much to not give the movie an extra star for his role.
Now, you may ask - why "just" five stars? While I very much enjoyed the first half of the movie (or rather, the movie up until Lucy barges into the surgery and shoots the patient, so the doctors can operate on her instead), the rest was mixture of missed opportunities and what I view as overkills throughout the movie.
Not to mention that the final "I AM EVERYWHERE" made me think of Terry Pratchett, and not about what a sacrifice Lucy did for the good of humanity.
So, yeah, 60% sums it just about right.
Non c'è due senza quattro (1984)
Prepare for trouble - make it double!
This is one of the movies that never fail to make me laugh like crazy. You see, I'm part of the generation that grew up on watching movies by duo SPencer and Hill, and the TV here in Czech never failed to deliver me my fix of comedy with the repeats of them.
The idea of the movie is probably not the most original under the sun, but I think it's delivered with such quality that it's worth watching, and repeatedly. I'm not sure about other dubbings, but I think that the Czech version is very good, and definitely adds on appeal of this movie. Not to mention the jokes, and the slapping fights! "The fact that he calls himself Tango in the land of Samba, tells us he's a complete idiot."
The First Wives Club (1996)
Movie to make your day
Ever since I've seen this movie for the very first time (even if I didn't completely understand its meaning, as I was just a small kid), I certainly adored this movie. Now that I'm older, I can see how desolating feelings Cynthia had to feel before she made the last step in her life, how frustrated Elis had to be when her husband was coming up clean yet again, how scared Annie had to be when the whole thing started to fall to ruin under her hands, and how terribly alone Brenda felt when she was trying to make a living, scrambling for every dollar. Yet, all three women come together again, and with their united powers will get their revenge, as well as make something amazing for all the women who get into the same situation they themselves were in.
This is definitely a favourite of mine, and I watch this movie every time I hit a low point.
Atentát (1964)
Movie That Will Give You Goosebumps
When I've first watched this movie, number of details escaped my notice. But on second seeing, all the details fell in together and created a masterfully done piece of art.
First of all, the names of members of groups Anthropoid, Silver A and Silver B are not their real names - in truth, those are names that were picked for them as their undercover names, and when I watched the movie, it was one of the details that somehow escaped me.
Second, when I browsed opinions for this movie, quite a number of people were voicing number of doubts when it came to the scene where the church is already surrounded by Nazis and there is this one person that keeps on telling them that they should surrender and nothing will happen to them. That is actually a proved fact, described in quite a detail in several monographs detailing the whole Operation Anthropoid.
And as had been pointed before, the usage of Beethove's Fifth symphony in the end of the movie is definitely there to give you some final goosebumps, making you unable to listen to that piece of classical music like you did before.
The Care Bears Movie (1985)
Movie of my childhood
When I was a small kid, this was one of my favourite movies - one of those I watched every time I was forced to be at home because I was ill, and believe me, it was something that happened to me quite a lot.
First of all, I always watched only the Czech dubbed version of this movie, and since in my opinion those voices were masterfully chosen, it definitely added on the magic that is The Care Bears. That being said, maybe one of the reasons why I still like this movie is that there had been no madness with the same name, as some other reviewers say. True, the movie may seem as overly naive and even stupid to us nowadays, since we are used to see tons of blood and violence at every second step in absolutely everything, so this movie, focused on feelings, compassion and friendship is somehow alien to us.
All in all, maybe it really is just naivety on my side, but I really can't imagine not watching this movie, once I've seen it for the very first time.
