Save the Cinema (2022)
Family friendly film for very good cinema
I actually saw this at the Lyric which surprised me with both the quality of the screen and also the audio which was excellent and (minor spoiler) obviously well worth the saving.
The Welsh accents were of variable quality and like many 'based on' stories many liberties were taken with both story and geography but the cast threw themselves at it and it raised both emotion and laughter.
The film won't win any awards but was excellent family fare that my whole family and as far as I could tell the whole audience enjoyed.
An wonderful experience all round and easily worth an 8.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
A good film
Some respected critics would have you believe that this is a poorer film than the 2016 reboot.
They are simply wrong.
5 of us watched this together on a night out and in an after cinema discussion there were two main conclusions drawn by us all.
Firstly we all felt it was a good enjoyable film that we'd enjoyed from beginning to end and secondly that the 2016 effort was appalling in comparison..!
This has more heart in the first 10 mins than the previous reboot has in the whole film.
It was funnier and effectively laid the groundwork for the continuation of the story in such a way that you actually want to see how it all turns out.
Found myself with an almost permanent grin on my face throughout.
It's unlikely to win any major awards but it's a good fun night out for the family (12A) that everyone will enjoy.!
Army of Thieves (2021)
Better than the 1st one.
Better and more consistently told story than 'Army of the dead '.
All in all a much better film even if there are fewer zombies.
Very enjoyable and intrigued as to what direction this series now goes in.
Flash Gordon (1980)
Wonderfully camp
A gloriously bonkers pantomime with a very cool theme tune by Queen.
The Guilty (2021)
V Good but increasingly unrealistic.
A very good movie which starts well but the actions taken by the call taker gets increasingly unrealistic as the movie progresses.
Definitely worth a watch though a clear 7 to 7.5.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Disappointed but not really bad..!
Could and should have been a lot better.
Visually interesting with some good ideas that were well executed but too long and with a story that's in desperate need of restructuring and better editing.
The Watch (2020)
Trying to be fair..
I'm a long term fan of the books on which this series has taken its 'inspiration' so I'm trying to be fair in this review to this series on it's own merits.
Unfortunately I think I've failed and following watching it I still feel that this is an opportunity missed that could and should have been SO much better - had they just simply stuck to the structure, balance and humour of the books.
How is it even possible to kill a stone troll with arrows..?
Death has lost his humanity.
Vetinari has lost her Machiavellian edge and also her 10 steps ahead management style.
The politics is missing.
The guilds aren't effectively fleshed out
Pacing is all over the place.
The wry humour is missing.
They've obviously made quite significant efforts to get a good cast together - but then wasted some of those talents in roles that just don't suit their elected roles.
A real shame - it could have been a classic had they done this better.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Not all bad - Just About Meh
Poorly written and edited - but for the most part reasonably acted.
Reasonable soundtrack.
Too verbose and with conversations that could and should have been cut back significantly without affecting what was trying to be conveyed.
Illogical, Wildly unbalanced execution and content of the fight scenes
Not funny enough.
Too much tell rather than show.
Mates scored it as a 'five' given that the female actors looked 'good in hot pants' so also failed in selling its Wokeness.
I'm giving it a 5 as I can't go below average as in that area you find '6 Underground'
Need to reconsider my scoring system.
Just about Meh
The Witcher (2019)
Builds up momentum.
The series was by no means perfect but built up a steady momentum over the run to its final episodes - where things fall more clearly into place in preparation of season 2.
The 1st episodes are some of the weakest in the show series with more clunky dialogue elements and unnecessary exposition that didn't either assist the understanding of world building or that of the main characters but seemed to allude to elements of real world political trends that distracted from the big story.
As the story progressed these distractions lessened and allowed a very good story to be progressed and told and an interesting world to be built through 'show not tell'.
Definitely a good start over the series length, left you wanting more at the end and on the right trajectory for an even better 2nd series.
8.5 out of 10 for the 1st series.
Venom (2018)
Don't listen to the Critics...
Occasionally a bit clunky, won't win any Oscars soon but definitely a fun film nonetheless introducing a new character.
Seemed to get stronger near the end and possibly had chunks cut out of it to get the age rating it was given.
Scope was available for it to be darker film with a higher more grown up rating in the Deadpool mode.
By no means a "bad" film.
