The Last of Us: Part II (2020)
10/10 for the story, but 20/10 for triggering the "alpha boys"
There's a reason that both of these games have been frequently cited as the best video game of all time. The story is a masterpiece, beautifully written and original.
My wife and I end up going back to these games every few months, much like we have comfort films, these are our comfort games. And personally the emotional arc of the story was one of the few things that helped me handle the death of my own parents and the anger that fuels the desire for revenge.
It cracks me up reading these rage reviews of people who obviously didn't understand the context or the obvious in the plot. All they see is things they chose to hate, so everything that makes the story impactful is lost to them. But at least they make for a good laugh.
Shameless: The Hobo Games (2019)
One of the best episodes of television ever.
I avoided starting Shameless for a long time, mostly because the length of the series felt cumbersome to binge.
I decided to finally give it a go while recovering from surgery and 4 weeks later, I'm finishing up season 9 when this episode hits and kicks me in the gut.
Watching Fiona's downfall has been heartbreaking to start, but paired with watching Lip's patriarchal rise and finally finding his purpose is a rollercoaster that I've been on myself. Jeremy Allen White's performance during the climax of this episode was breathtaking and Emmy worthy. The lack of nominations for this role a crime.
American Horror Story: Return to Murder House (2018)
Best episode of the series, with one massive flaw.
I loved American Horror Story from the beginning and was a die-hard fan until Season 6. I gave up a few episodes into Cult and hadn't watched since. I finally decided to go back after 3 years, mostly out of extreme boredom while recovering from surgery.
After forcing my way through Cult, I was cautiously optimistic for Apocalypse, and so far I've been amazed at how perfectly Season 8 was crafted. It feels like the magic of the show has finally been restored.
However there is one massive issue, that could have easy been avoided. The inclusion of Anton LaVey is a factual error that could have been so easily avoided if not for pure laziness. LaVey, while leader of the Church of Satan and a figurehead of modern day Satanism.
However, even the most basic of research would inform the writers that LaVeyan Satanism is an athiest organization and does not believe, let alone worship Lucifer.
The Godfather (1972)
Greatest of all time
A true classic that never gets old. I regularly watch this (and both sequels) at least once a year, usually during either a snow day or a sick day.
