Psych: The Movie (2017)
Not the best Psych but definitely enjoyed it
I went back and watched the entire series again before watching this. "The Movie" wasn't Christmas dinner but more of a real good, satisfying late night ham sandwich.
Standard Psych interactions. Fun, some good lines etc.
The more negative reviews, I get. The plot was thin and it lacked any dramatic moments. Psych has the ability to bring laugh out loud moments and move you to tears moments in the same episode. Few shows do it as well. This wasn't Yin/Yang good (I hope Ally Sheedy is in the next installment), nor as good as the Despereaux or Declan Rand episodes but itt was entertaining and fun. I enjoyed seeing Zachary Levi from "Chuck" although wished he was a client rather than a bad guy.
My hopes is that the second movie contains both the humor AND the emotional drama of the better episodes.
The Newsroom (2012)
10 starts for the pilot, 1 star since then.
Sorkin must be wired into the White House propaganda staff. I along with many others (as I look at the early reviews) thought this show was going to break some new ground. As a big fan of Sports Night, I know that Sorkin can build drama well. I even switched to HBO after the first episode. An episode that promised a level of intellectual integrity that's been completely lacking over the years in serial TV. Alas, from that point forward The Newsroom has been a revisionist history leftist propaganda piece that uses an agenda driven platform to attack the Republican and Tea Party members of America. I canceled HBO four episodes later. The "Aha" moments of the show range from humorous conjecture to pure fiction. It's a shame, I found most of the acting and characters good. I'm sorry the show changed direction so abruptly and completely and I'm more sorry that it feeds the misinformed bias and may in some small way influence some to vote for a Socialist future.
The Newsroom: The 112th Congress (2012)
Great writing, if you can get past Sorkins politics
Watching The Newsroom is like watching Sports Night 2.0, done from a newsroom. Sorkin knows how to build drama and the first episode was one of finest shows I've seen in years. Unfortunately, it was a red herring. Those with a liberal bent will absolutely love this show. It's witty, thought provoking and the "My Girl Friday" frenetic pace of the dialog is exceptionally well done. In the 112th Congress episode, Sorkin becomes a shill for the far left and attempts to trash the Tea Party. I've watched all the episodes twice and for that alone I give Sorkin and his crew kudos. It's compelling, even if it's outlook is right out of an Al Jazeera blog.
The subsequent episodes have been entertaining as far as it's relationships within the newsroom getting fleshed out, but it's leftist bent portrayed as being the moral center ground limits its mass appeal. That's fine, but many will seeing it as merely a rallying cry for Obama's reelection, using well done fiction. It's the best thing I've seen Jeff Daniels do. Emily Mortimer and John Gallagher Jr are excellent and Allison Pill is a great wild card. Some don't like her, but she brings a dimension to the show that keeps it light and is someone we've all met in the workplace. I'll keep watching unless the preachy politics wears me down..
