Reviews
Hellboy (2004)
Good for the first hour, but then...
"Hellboy" is another comic book that most people do not know. It was made because of the successes of other super hero films, like "Spider-Man", "X-Men" and "Daredevil."
[CONTAINS SPOILERS!]
It starts off with the American soldiers in Scotland trying to stop Nazis from opening a portal to another dimension, and causing the end of the world. The Americans stop them, but something comes out of the dimension. A little red, devil-like creature, with a right arm made out of rock.
Hellboy continues to grow, and fights super-natural forces for a government agency devoted to use and stop super-natural powers in this world.
It starts off with a fight with "the hell dog" a third human, third squid, third dog. Like creatures in Greek mythology, if you kill one, two come back. Really intense and really fun to watch!
We meet Liz, a pyro with inner-turmoil, and Abe, a super smart mutant that looks like "The Creature From The Black Lagoon." And then there is the kind Professor, to whom Hellboy calls dad.
We get into this plot about opening the gateway to Hell, something about how Rasputin didn't die, and Hellboy betraying the world. The plot twists and turns, so that you really have no idea what is going on.
"Hellboy" had potential, but by the end, you ask yourself why it couldn't it be more like "X-Men".
It's worth the price of admission to see some of the battles, and Liz, Hellboy, and Abe together, but what it wins in thrills it loses in script.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Funny, yet very over-rated
I was talking to a user on a board a little while ago. We were rating movies. When the title "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" came up, he gave it a 10, a higher rating then he gave such classics like "Lord of the Rings", "Casablanca", "Titanic" and "The Godfather."
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is a very funny movie. It is probably one of the most popular "cult films" of all time. Yes, Entertainment Weekly called this a "cult film"
But is it worth all the hype and attention?
I am a big fan of the old Monty Python TV Show. Many of my friends have seen any of the old shows. When I ask them about watching the TV shows with me, they look puzzled, and go. "There were Monty Python TV shows? Awesome!" The shows came out 10 years before the movie did.
So, yes, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" deserves a place in movie history. But it is a silly comedy. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
A very well put-together film!
"Master and Commander- The Far Side of the World" is a really interesting movie.
Russell Crow and Paul Bettany are great actors. This film really shows there talents.
The screenplay is amazing, and does well of adapting such a complex book into a great movie.
We have heard a lot about "chick flicks." If there is such a thing as a "guy's flick", this is it. Other then the fact that there is no female in the movie, this one is really for the males. It has action, war, humor, and a lot of historical accuracy. It is also one of the most accurate historical fiction movies of all time.
So, bravo "Master and Commander!"
I heard they are making a sequel. I hope it is just as good!
The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course (2002)
So terrible it's not even funny...
I think the Croc Hunter is a pretty cool guy! I know I wouldn't have the nerve to go even 5 feet away from a croc.
But, everything in this movie is bad. Farting jokes, people getting eaten, and the skit about the President all make the movie one of the worst of all time.
It's a really bad film that you have to stay away from. All the "jokes" are so juvenile that you will find yourself laughing because they are so stupid. The plot is so bad that you wonder if the screenwriter is 4 years old.
I'm surprised the Croc Hunter did not beg the crocodile to eat him after he saw this.
Independence Day (1996)
Takes movie making lightyears ahead!
This is my favorite movie. I'm not kidding. It's full of action. It has romance. It's funny. It's serious. It's a disaster movie. This movie, when it was released, was the way "Pirates Of The Caribbean" is now. A huge fan base. It was a hit. This movie deserves a second look. It didn't become the biggest movie of '96 for nothing!
So, if you want a fun sci-fi, that will make you laugh, cry, and want more action, "ID4- Independence Day" is, without doubt, THE MOVIE YOU WANT TO SEE!
In the 7 years since it was released (man, has it been that long) "ID4" has gone from a hit to almost non-existent. So give it a look. You will be glad you did!
