One Piece: Romance Dawn (2023)

Good start but too much Nami
31 August 2023
The world of One Piece feels alive and believable, just like in the manga and anime. So I think the makers have already made half the battle.

The fact that Zoro meets an agent of Baroque Works who wants to recruit him is something we've only heard about in Zoro's story so far. I found this meeting as an introduction for Zoro very fitting.

Zoro's fight scenes are very good to watch.

However, there were some things I didn't like very much:

  • Too much Nami. At the beginning, it should be about Luffy and Zoro meeting alone and just the two of them starting their journey, like in the manga. He is Luffy's first member. Instead, the scene where Zoro agrees to join the crew is simply skipped or postponed and they set off as a threesome, with Nami, who has too much screen time and too many combat skills.

  • Atmospheric scenes like Coby telling Luffy and Zoro about the Grandline or Morgan telling about the Devils Fruit were left out.

  • Luffy is a little too sly and clever in his statements. The creators should be careful that Inaki doesn't get the upper hand over Luffy.

I have to admit that I was sceptical at the beginning, but all in all I can say that the start with all its surroundings is enjoyable.

1883: Lightning Yellow Hair (2022)
Season 1, Episode 7
5/10
Soapnado
1 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Soap continues.

Faith Hill's - of course for the year 1883 usual - strong, independent and self-important character may just slap a person in front of everyone, just because he cursed. Especially since that person is more important as a cook than she is and contributes more to the community. Simply self-righteous and ridiculous.

Her daughter, with at least the same traits, kisses a man she has known for 17 seconds in the middle of a tornado. Very believable and romantic, bravo.

James Dutton, like a helpless 21st century wimp father, asks the others for help to make the argument against his daughter.

More from Faith Hill. Instead of staying at camp with her own 4 year old son to watch over him, she decides to ride off to her daughter with a rifle. Otherwise she would act like a woman and a normal mother of a 4 year old. And nobody wants that.

Of course, Taylor Sheridan's appearance is not to be missed. He is of course all alone in the prairie, far away from any civilization as a lonely hunter on the road. No one would survive 2 days alone out there, but hey, someone had to be at the right place at the right time.

And what was Sam Elliot actually hired for?

What exactly was Sam Elliot hired to do in this teen soap?
1 March 2023
Only 4 episodes left and they are only now leaving Texas.

6 episodes about a teenage girl which adds nothing to the story of the Dutton's or the story of the unknown west.

Female characters behave as if it is not 1883 but 2023. Mrs. Dutton gets drunk and berates her husband for not forgiving him. Hello, you indirectly tolerated your daughter into romance with a cowboy and watched her "becoming woman".

For 6 episodes now, I've missed the important issue of racism, especially towards Thomas as an African American and former slave who had implied he was whipped. No one looks at him suspiciously or calls him names, which is very very unusual for that era. Even in the 1950s, he would have had problems.

Sheridan had a unique opportunity to show themes of racism, Native Americans, challenging Sam Elliot's acting performance, showing states other than Texas in their pristine state, and many other themes.

The white Europeans who discovered, colonized and settled USA were greedy racist mass murderers towards African Americans and Native Americans. From the sailors, to the Mayflower, to the pioneers, to Ellis Island. All of them. Not a trace of it here.

Instead, we get a teen soap opera and a man (James Dutton0) who acts like a wimpy 21st century father and husband.

2020s values implausibly forced into 1880s era
28 February 2023
Faith Hill's character, of course, makes it clear to her husband right at the beginning that she doesn't need his permission. I mean, you could still tell your husband where to go, since smartphones didn't exist yet and he should know where to find you. It's 1883.

For a week your daughter has been herding cattle with two cowboys you don't know, what did you think would happen?

Then Faith Hill tells her daughter that when she was her age she kissed a lot of boys too. Sure, growing up in Tennessee in the 1850s, that must have been easy.

Elsa gets caught losing her virginity and instead of "chastising" her in a contemporary way, the whole thing is handled like a 1990s teen series.

Sheridan can't portray strong women and everyone is over the top.

Just as Yellowstone should be called the Beth Dutton Show, 1883 should be called Elsa Dutton 90210.

Slow and Lazy Teenage Story
28 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts with a 17 year old girl wandering alone and unsupervised on the unknown prairie with its snakes, wolves, coyotes and bandits, very cool.

Sam Elliot's character has been to Oregon before and also knows that there are another 20 rivers to cross. Yet, before the first river, it occurs to him that the immigrants need to get rid of their stuff? Why don't you mention that before in Fort Worth?????

Why doesn't one of the carpenters build a raft with the main crew together????

Why do people drown in a river that can be crossed on foot????

Elsa with pants. Short sleeves. Kissing a cowboy. In front of her father. It's 1883. Not ashamed considering the mores and circumstances of the time. Instead we see a father of the year conversation.

Elsa decides to celebrate the joyous occasion by playing Moonlight Sonata on the piano, while people are still drowning in the river. Bravo.

Was this episode written during a bowel movement?

OK episode but Sheridan falls into his typical patterns
27 February 2023
Once again, a brilliant and promising start with the first two episodes. And once again Sheridan falls into his habits of discarding them.

He made a point in the first episode of making sure the audience understands that these are immigrants who lack any English skills, only to write a plot hole in this episode where suddenly some of them speak English. And to top it off, they speak English briefly among themselves instead of in their own language.

Because of little mistakes like this, and Sheridan's laziness, Yellowstone went from being a very good series, to an OK series, and ended up being a plot hole filled Beth & Rip show.

I hope that 1883 and 1923 will not share the same fate.

"The Beth and Rip Show" as epitome of lazy writing
25 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Where to even begin with this masterpiece of a episode? I mean, Jamie's biological father is basically a genius strategist on par with Tywin Lannister, it's like he's been planning his whole life for this moment.

And let's not forget about Monica and Kayce's storyline, I mean who needs chemistry between them after 4 seasons when you can have blandness and always the same facial expression of Monica?

And Beth, the most lovable character of them all, with her unique personality and heartwarming backstory. We got it, your childhood was crap. You are strong. We got it. And we definitely need more of her and Rip's love story, it's not like we've seen it a million times before.

And what's with the New York financial whales storyline in combination with the boring activists? A special unit moves in to arrest a few unwashed activists, interesting.

Same goes for Jimmy's storyline, because we all know he's just a chick magnet without even trying, it's not like we need character development or anything.

But the real MVP is John and Rip's little Pulp Fiction reenactment, because who wouldn't rob a diner in the middle of day while the sheriff sits there enjoying his meal. And John playing the hero with a masterplan and navy seal cooperation with Rip. If it wasn't for John's heroic actions, the sheriff would still be alive.

Yellowstone: I Want to Be Him (2021)
Season 4, Episode 6

Almost quitted watching the show
24 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Let's start with the most predictable scene ever: I think the conversation between Jamie and his street smart, forward-thinking, manipulative, wise and intelligent (as all washed-up former drug-addicted hillbilly murderers who served time in prison are) biological father was predicted by every single person who saw the episode, right down to the hug.

The most unnecessary characters that ever existed in a series have finally left the bunkhouse. I even forgot their job title (barrel girls?). In a ranch where there are strict and clear rules that are enforced by Rip again and again, these characters were too long and unbelievable on the ranch.

Everyone on this ranch seems to be a slave to do whatever Rip and John tells them to do. I mean, do they all have no lives, no futures, no dreams, no hobbies, no families, no lifes, no partners or no children? The only thing they do is listen to Rip.

Rip is a ruthless robot who bullies, humiliates and intimidates everyone. In a previous episode there was a short flashback of what Lloyd did for him and it seems that he was the only one who was always there for him, yet he puts everything above their friendship and treats him like a slave. We are probably supposed to see some sympathies and deeper reasons in Rip's actions.

Also we witnessed a fight that lasts over an hour between someone who was pierced with a knife and pumped full of cattle drugs the day before and an old man with infinite stamina. I thought I was watching an anime.

Jamie as attorney general has no security? His secretary just lets someone into his office without getting Jamie's approval? And do the writers seriously believe that Beth stubbing out a cigarette on the table with her legs on it makes her seem cool and intimidating?

Even after four seasons there is zero chemistry between Casey and Monica. Monica always has the same facial expression, always the same complaints and always the same problems. We get it, you were in a bad place and you deserve better. Please enjoy the new scenery and grow old there.

I won't even mention the rebellious w0ke vegan environmental activist storyline.

Lazy writing. But it's too late to quit the show, before the season ends at least.

Yellowstone: The Unravelling: Part 2 (2018)
Season 1, Episode 9
2/10
Most clichéd piece of TV you will find
16 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How promising the series was in the beginning, only to become more tedious and clichéd with each episode.

Call me ignorant, but Beth is the least interesting character I've ever seen in a series. She seems to be the only person in human history who seems to have had a rough childhood, and every viewer needs to be reminded of it every few minutes. It's a mystery what an interesting and deep person like Rip finds endearing about a manipulative narcissist like Beth. Beth's one-dimensionality can perhaps be rivaled by Monica, who has an epiphany out of nowhere and soap-like abandons Kayce, love of her life and father of her child.

Of course, consequently, Kayce also has a sudden change of heart and throws all his principles overboard and becomes a murderer, so that his son does not end up in poverty later and inherit Yellowstone. Role model of a father.

And the kidnapping of the rich builder - whose name I don't remember - of course happens without problems in daylight in the middle of the shopping mile in the open street, without regard for witnesses who could remember license plates and faces. The Dutton's just risk long prison sentences. Tell me you are out of time and ideas without telling me you are out of time and ideas.

Jamie, the only person in the family who has useful skills, is bullied by his sister and chased away by his father. The reason why he is hated so much was still not mentioned in the first season. Probably there's no reason.

Oh, and why the hell is a woman hired out of nowhere as a "cowgirl" and even housed with men, which is largely made up of former criminals? Of course, she also has to play out all the Tough Girls clichés and run around topless and play cards with the gentlemen.

Sometimes I think the script was written on the toilet on a smartphone and sent to the studio via text message.

Wasted opportunity
12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately, despite impressive visuals and cinematography, Netflix has failed to do justice to Roberto Baggio's moving and multi-faceted career and life. The actors do a very good job, however Baggio's father issues are over thematised. He grew up at a time when it was not uncommon for the father to be a hard-working strict man who had to feed 5-10 people.

And why the hell was there a time jump of 6 years between 1988 and 1994, right when he became famous and matured into a man? Why wasn't he shown establishing himself at Fiorentina and moving to Juventus as the most expensive transfer? The 1990 World Cup as an important point in his career, where, although better than Vialli, he came off the bench? How he turned the life of his working-class family around for the better?

After the 1994 World Cup how he dealt with the lost penalty and his move to AC Milan? His personal redemption in the 1998 World Cup?

Instead, there is another 6-year jump.

A 90-minute film does not do him justice at any time.

1899 (2022)
5/10
Quantity over quality, bad dialogues, characters you don't care about and a plot that has been done countless times before.
24 November 2022
The creators of 1899 have clearly tried to keep their style of "Dark", but without maintaining an interesting story.

Pale and unlikeable characters for whom you quickly lose interest. Very bad, cliched dialogues, which for whatever reason takes place between people of different languages and is absurdly understood by the other without the help of gestures and facial expressions.

90% of each episode is filled with irrelevant and meaningless filler scenes. Endless staring at each other. Endless moving around in tunnels and passages that still continue to be shown in full extension after 7 episodes. The already mentioned empty dialogues. A overstyled cliffhanger at the end of each episode to keep the viewer happy.

In Dark you soaked up every scene and dialogue and you didn't want to miss anything. But in 1899 you could skip half of every episode and you wouldn't miss anything. And even half is meant positively, because this chaotic and randomly strung together story could have been told in a 100 minute movie.

How to abuse fame and get away with it. Slow, empty, self-indulgent and pseudo-poetic mediocrity.
23 November 2022
Although I knew in advance that this film would be unlike any of Tarantino's previous films, I went into it with appropriate expectations. What I found was a overlong, tedious, boring, unfunny, self-indulgent and empty film with no likeable characters.

Many pseudo-poets and philosophers believe they can recognise a deep and qualitative meaning in it, but they would not pay any attention to the film if it did not abuse the 3 big names.

Any documentary about the film industry of the 60s and 70s is more interesting than this mediocrity.

Even not everything DaVinci made was declared art and masterpiece, same goes for Tarantino.

Wasted potential
9 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In this sequel, which could have been better and therefore wastes its potential, we see good actors with a very below-average and illogical story.

The chemistry between Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita is undoubtedly good, but it can't save the ridiculous messy plot. The villains, uncle and nephew, are more cartoonish than intimidating.

The famous scene in which Daniel smashes ice may look good, but the setting around it is stupid. Miyagi AND Sato of course happen to be nearby and as "honorable" men the first thing they do is bet on this.

And why the hell does everyone (except Miyagi's dying father) speak English in Okinawa? Even Sato makes public announcements to villagers in English and everyone understands it.

The last fight is a joke and totally unbelieavable, even cringeworthy when everyone takes out the mini drums to cheer up Daniel.

The only good scene was when Daniel sat down next to Miyagi on the rock to comfort him with his story about his own father. Very beautiful scene.

I don't get the praising for season 2
30 April 2020
I think watching Season 2 right after watching season 1 wasn't a good idea. 3 minutes tension isn't enough to rate this episode above 9. Kirsten Dunst feels like a filler for me I'm playing with my smartphone everytime she starts talking. Everything feels so forced like they try to be stylish and original but in my eyes this season is average. There aren't any likeable characters I cheer for.

Season 1 >>>>> in every aspect.

29 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Season 2 so far is busy with being in love with itself. We got it, our hero, the state trooper, is a fearless All American law keeper but his bravery is is not believable. Neither at the Gerhard's farm nor in in the standoff with the brothers. I didn't feel any tension there and him showing on emotions doesn't make it better or cool in any way. You have a sick wife and a kid, show more respect to life!

The way too many coincidences make the show more unbelievable and unlikable.
