Mike & Molly: Victoria Can't Drive (2012)
Great character development for Victoria
I always enjoy this episode (in reruns). It all comes together in the last 10 minutes when Victoria shows that her ample bosom houses a magnificent heart. Her farewell to the gentleman that she is working on (at the morgue) is touching and funny. This is followed by a lovely interaction with the always acerbic Peggy ,where, with a few well chosen words, she is able to help Mike and Molly with their problem of the week...and does not take credit for the change of heart that she brought about. I always liked Victoria but this episode presents a thoughtful and empathetic side that made me lover her.
Call Me Kat (2021)
Winning me over
It is obviously not an original for anyone who watched the BBC production of Miranda (which I loved) and I did spend the first episode rolling my eyes.
Here's the thing though, by the 3rd episode Mayim started being Mayim and not a copy of Miranda and, while there are many elements that are the same (Breaking the wall, the unrequited love of the boy next door, the cloying mother, the wave at the end of the show...) The characters are different. Miranda Hart (a comic genius) is goofy and awkward, but endearing. Mayim as Kat is goofy but charming. And Kat has some beautiful cats, so there is that.
Both shows have heart and that is what we really need these days. I'll keep watching because so many copies of English shows have gone on to evolve their own vibe and ended up being pretty darn good (The Office)
The Adventures of Mark & Brian (1991)
A Celebrity Reality Show That Was Ahead Of It's Time.
In an impossible time slot (against 60 Minutes, which was still in it's prime) Mark and Brian entertained me greatly with their adventures. When I watched the show I was not an M&B listener (I have since become one) but what I enjoyed at the time, and continue to enjoy as a listener, is how good natured they are. There is a sense of fun, without meanness (but just enough naughtiness to keep them interesting)
Whether they were swimming with sharks, or being birthing coaches, they were real and natural, and were never artificial in their reactions, as is so often the case on modern celebrity reality shows. They were really ahead of their time.
I hope that this series is eventually released as a DVD set. Knowing Mark and Brian, part of the proceeds will go to a worthy charity, because that is the kind of guys that they were, and still are.
