Scream 4 (2011)
Are you serious?
First of all, let's get something straight. If you love movies with little to no character development, terrible plots, bad acting, cast, and overall horrible film making, then this is the movie for you.
I did not have very high expectations for scream 4, and even with the bar set so low, the movie did not deliver. The entire film i was kept wondering why they did not do anything as simple as to investigate bodies or evidence at all. It was basically a wild goose chase the entire time, and even when they are near catching ghostface, he simply slips away as if he/she was a ghost or something. There were multiple times watching this movie where i found myself yelling at the screen "just shoot him already!" And did you not find it funny how the police were virtually non-existent the entire movie? Along with Sidney? The cops always arrived at the scene too late, or were picked of by ghostface one by one. The film was so predictable. Honestly, you could tell who the killers were or if you did not, you at least had a good idea towards who it was.
My personal opinion towards this film is that if you are looking for a spoof, or if you are in the mood for a movie you will not take seriously, watch this. I really just cannot believe Wes Craven was the director of this disaster.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The dark knight rises: expectations are met
I had many hopes and expectations for this film, and they all were met. I was really wishing that Nolan would create a fitting movie to end this trilogy and he did. It took four long years, but he finally got the job done, and created my personal movie of the year 2012.
Christopher Nolan begins this movie during Gotham's peace time. Criminals have been absent, since the Joker had been taken down years before. Throughout the peace time, Batman was no longer needed in the city, so Bruce Wayne threw away his cape and cowl shutting himself in to his house, waiting for things to go bad again. And they did. Except a injury ridden, older, "rusty" Batman was in over his head this time. Bane was a supposed trainee of Ra's al ghul, and he was build like a house. This is why when he went head to head with Batman, Bruce was really beaten up. Instead of killing Batman, Bane decided to cast him into a jail, an underground jail you can escape from but to do so you must climb out. Bane was one of the few that did, with the help of Talia Al ghul which we find out later.
When Bruce recovered, after many tries he escaped the pit. By that point, Bane had already taken over the corrupt city spreading chaos all throughout, Leaving courageous officers like Blake and Gordon to fend for themselves, trying to fight against Bane. When he gets his hands on a nuclear weapon is when things began to get really dangerous. During Batman's stay in the pit, Bane forced him to watch Gotham's destruction on a small T.V. And when he escaped, he had little time to shut down the nuclear bomb. With the help of Gordon, Blake, and Catwoman, they still did not have enough time to disarm it so Batman decides to fly it out over the coast (with the help of his plane-like car), saving the mass population. It seemed he died, but no, Bruce set his plane/car to autopilot, saving both Gotham and himself. Little did Gotham's people know, Batman survived. And during this time, the Wayne corporation was taken over by other politicians, and the Wayne mansion was transformed into one for orphans. Also, Blake discovers the Bat-cave, a very well done ending scene.
I did throughly enjoy this movie. Nolan kept you on the edge of your seat for quite some time, and it is rare that movies can do that. They often offer thrills here and there, but cannot keep you engaged, and on the edge of your seat for long periods of time. Nolan did, and i was impressed by that. The acting in this film was marvelous. Anything lacking emotionally was provided in Alfred's character. And Anna Hathaway did a great job playing Selina Kyle. Overall however, my favourite character had to have been Blake. And the way they ended the movie with him discover Batman's hideout was superb. I also liked how they related to the comics where Bane really did kick the crap out of Batman, because that is what was supposed to happen. The part where Bruce was trapped in the pit was amazingly well done. He did not fear death, but in the end, it was fear that pushed to make that leap across the ledge.
Of all the wonderful things in this movie, it also had it's flaws. Minor things like how did bane get him to the pit so fast? How did Bruce recover so quickly after a supposed broken back? Another thing I thought could have been done better was how the threat was nuclear. Isn't there a nuclear threat in every movie these days? I also felt that Anna Hathaway could have used a little more screen time, Alfred also, but that might be just me.
Of all the things done well in this movie, it also had it's flaws. Things were done good and bad, but there was definitely more good in this film. Honestly, Christopher Nolan has outdone himself. Again.
Halloween (1978)
A classic horror movie
I cannot even comprehend how this classic has only an overall 7.9 rating on IMDb. This is a disgrace. This movie dawned an onslaught of slasher movies to come, and still few of them are as suspenseful as this nearly 35 year old movie is.
Just the idea of a paranormal being like Michael Myers gives one the chills. And then imagine it chasing you until it kills you, and the mere idea is frightening.
The idea behind this film is that Michael Myers(Tony Moran), was a mentally disturbed child since he murdered his sister in cold blood when wearing a mask on Halloween as a child. He had been institutionalized ever since this incident, until he escaped one night and began terrorizing the population of one of the near small towns.
laurie Stroud(Jamie Lee Curtis) had started getting harassed by Michael when she and her friends had been walking home, and her friend shouts out an insult at michael for driving so slow. In this first suspenseful scene, Micheal simply stops the car. This leaves you wondering, on edge of your seat, what he will do...but he ends up driving off anyways. Eventually, Micheal ends up picking off Laurie's friends one by one. When Laurie goes to check it out.. she finds all the bodies of her friends. Quickly after that, she is acquainted with the killer, whom she runs away from. This is also one of my personal favourite parts. She runs home and wakes up one of the kids sleeping in the house, who takes quite a while to get downstairs and unlock the door for the poor laurie. During this scene, you watch the slow moving Michael walk closer and closer to the house, and by the time the little boy unlocks the door, michael is nearly on the porch. This scene is followed by many which must have petrified the observer. The closet scene, for example was quite a scary clip especially watching it for the first time.
All in all, I must say that if this does not crack the all time greatest horror movies, that i don't know what does. I'ts not the acting or the jump scares that make this movie a classic- it's the way that Michael is portrayed. The way this movie built suspense. It's soundtrack, it's use of lighting, and the way that Michael is there one moment and not the next- THAT is what made this movie. The way that you can never tell what he or it is... even though he appearers to be a mortal, human being.
Hanna (2011)
A solid thriller/action film
For those of you that think i have overrated this movie, i would agree with you. I am simply giving it a higher score to raise it's rating of 6.9 on IMDb, because i believe it deserves more than that.
Hanna is about a young woman of 16, with super-human capabilities, given that she was a man made experiment to make a hybrid human that was smarter, faster, ETC. She is an assassin trained by her father, a supposed Ex-spy, to protect herself from her "mother" whom has been on the lookout for Hanna since she was born. Once Hanna has decided that she is done her training, she and her father set off a beacon sent directly to the mother who quickly takes advantage and begins her search. There were certain parts in this movie that seemed quite pointless however. To be specific, There was not much point showing us Cate Blanchette's character scraping at her teeth in the bathroom. And I also found it quite unrealistic that Hanna found civilization riding across part of the desert underneath the tank.
To be honest, I think that this film deserved it's previous score on IMDb in the 7.5-7.9 range. It's plot may seem quite boring, and lacking at certain points, but personally, I think that Saoirse Ronan played the role of Hanna fantastically. She did a exquisite job and she gets two thumbs up for what she has done here. I think she an actor with much potential, as a matter of fact and she has done quite well in the starring roles of her last couple films. Cate blanchette was decent as well, and even though Eric Bana was not bad, he still fit the role.
Even though there were many problems involving the plot, some character development and quite a few clichés, Hanna was better than I thought it was going to be. If you are craving a good thriller or action film, watch this. It certainly ends with a bang.
Inception (2010)
Well, i can safely say this is one of my favorites
I was literally blown away after watching this movie in my home, on a rainy afternoon on a random day last fall.
I did not expect much, coming into this movie. I mean really, I saw the trailer for it, and heard some good things from acquaintances and friends, but it seemed like an average movie with a pretty twisted plot. I have seen my fair share of movies good and bad, but out of all of them Inception was one of the only films with a plot that was not predictable.
Honestly, Christopher Nolan has outdone himself here. He has written and directed some of my favorite films including The Dark Knight trilogy and momento but between this and the sequel to batman begins it is certainly a tie at roughly 8.8.
Even though i found there to be quite a few clichés and holes in the plot, Inception makes up for it with great camera work, an absolutely incredible storyline and a wonderful script. Combine that with great cast selection including members with great chemistry, and you have one hell of a movie.
Anyways, let's cut to the chase. If you happen to stumble upon inception and you haven't seen it yet, pick it up. You will not be disappointed.
Sincerely, "Thomas".
